we meant well

I feel like I am in love with you, and it should be spring. I want the sun throbbing on my head like chords of music. I think of a sun like Beethoven, a wind like Debussy, and bird calls like Stravinsky. But the tempo is all mine.

Patricia Highsmith, The Price of Salt (1952)

Pilot

In 2001, after September 11th, I was trying to build a decorative wooden box/cabinet thing, using just hand tools. I’d started it several days before the events, and I was determined to finish, regardless. Predictably, it was a disaster; the box had no structural integrity, and the slip of a chisel left me with a deep wound (now a scar) at the base of my left palm. Weeks later, a good friend and I were commiserating about our general incompetence, right in that aftermath, and he said, “That’s the public art, the memorial we need: just a huge pile of things people were trying to do.” In that spirit, here’s a piece I started a week or so prior to last Tuesday. It was intended to be short and ultimately sweet (similar in feel to Hotel). But like that futile box, it has no structural integrity; you’ll no doubt get an idea of how it’s meant to work, but it just doesn’t. It lurches around, overwritten, underwritten… I decided to finish it (or “finish” it) anyway, because: here is what I was trying to do. I haven’t forgotten about other stories, but it seemed better to take it out on this instead. Three parts: this today, second tomorrow, third on Wednesday. P.S. This story, despite its being about a pilot, has nothing to do with Sept. 11. I’m just marking a similarity in my own emotional state.

Pilot

“Double whiskey and soda.”

The words are clipped and low. Helena Wells is not surprised by that drink order, for the person issuing it is a pilot. That the whiskey-and-soda pilot is in this case a woman is slightly unusual, but most people, Helena has noted in her relatively short career thus far as a bartender, do drink according to position, not gender. She places an ice cube in a tumbler, fills the tumbler with the bar’s well bourbon, adds a brief spray of soda, and places it in front of the pilot, whose eyes have followed Helena as she assembled the drink. Her gaze now meets Helena’s in cool appraisal.

Helena has not seen this pilot before. She’s seen this look, however; all pilots seem to know it and use it. Flight attendants do not. Flight attendants deploy smiles that do not reach their eyes.

Helena is becoming familiar with the looks proffered by flight attendants and pilots because the establishment whose bar she began to tend not long ago is located near both an airport and a hotel where flight crews are customarily housed. The hotel does not have a bar of its own, a fact for which Helena is grateful: she is also becoming familiar with the fact that people who travel for a living tend to tip well.

This pilot bears out that tendency: she finishes her drink, drops a ten and two fives on the bar. The ice cube remains, largely unmelted, in the glass. She says, “Thanks.” Then she stands and walks away, away and out, nodding to a flight attendant as she leaves.

She’s tall, this pilot.

season 1, episode 8 : Heart of Gold

present : Having been taken into custody and growing desperate in the face of her upcoming trial, Mary Margaret agrees to Mr. Gold’s persuasions to allow him to be her lawyer, despite skepticism from Emma and Graham. Mary Margaret pleads innocent before Judge Lyman but the evidence against her is damning. All seems lost in the court room until Gold calls Sydney Glass to the stand, who falters under pressure until one small missing detail leads to the unraveling of the truth: Regina ordered Sydney to murder Zoe, plant the evidence, and falsify the DNA reports to frame Mary Margaret. Sydney confesses to disobeying Regina and locking Zoe away in his basement, tied and gagged, and using the heart of a deer instead. Zoe is rescued, Mary Margaret is set free, and temporary custody of Henry is granted to Emma while Sydney and Regina are locked away. Gold visits Regina in her jail cell and a conversational stalemate between them leads to a shocking revelation: the fairy tales are real, and both Gold and Regina know the truth.

past : A heart-to-heart conversation between Prince Charming and Princess Luciana leads to a journey to the edge of the deserted kingdom of Camelot to the Lake of Avalon. The waters of Avalon are rumored to break enchantments and Luciana hopes to use it to save her true love, Golidlocks of Dun Broch, a knight who was turned into solid gold by the touch of the furious King Midas. The protector of Avalon, the Lady of the Lake, transforms herself into Snow White in an attempt to seduce and drown Charming, but he avails and they collect a flask of the lake’s water. When they arrive at the site where Goldilocks is frozen, Midas arrives and gleefully drinks the Avalon water. Midas is horrified when he realizes that the water has broken his golden touch, killing him, and Luciana and Goldilocks are reunited. This is how that happened, right? Is that canon now?

Did someone say... bad future Redcliffe? Because you know... Orlais is destroyed. Do you think Morrigan got out in time? Does Avrian know? Does he hope that she comes back to him? Is he afraid she'll come back to him the way Tamlen did?

FUCK THE HELL I PLAYED MYSELF.

Morrigan is smart, and clever, and cunning, and she knows that she will be blamed for Celene’s assassination if she does not uncover the threat first - but alone, she cannot quite do enough. Celene is dead, and Gaspard blames Briala, and Briala blames Gaspard, and half of the court blames Briala because she’s an elf and the other half blames Gaspard because they’re in one or two different alliances against him. Gaspard’s own sister blames Gaspard.

Morrigan sees the blood on the floor and the writing on the wall and goes to find Kieran. She knows it looks suspicious, for her to disappear. She doesn’t care. What they think of her is irrelevant now. This is war, and she will survive. She always survives.

have another one because i love memes and you never reblog them so: ¿ - for my muse to ask yours a personal or uncomfortable question - i know you already did that BUT it's suprising how many things on that list we already did haha. for hogan.

Sure, the man drove him up a wall, but Hogan was actually not that bad to talk to. Whether he’s actually listening or not, Klink didn’t really care. At least /someone/ wasn’t telling him to shut up.

This time though, Klink has been thinking about since the war was “called off”. After this is all over, whether they won or the Allies won, where would they go? What would happen if the Americans came in tomorrow? Or…the Russians? Klink looked over at Hogan, who just ‘snuck’ a cigar and was returning the box, and gave a little sigh. “Hogan…” he started, turning back from the window to face him. Gosh, he almost didn’t /want/ to know the truth. But, he was a kind of man who /had/ to know. Another small question: where does he start?

“I will never see you after this is over, will I?”

chaotic evil: the major precepts of this alignment are freedom, randomness, and woe. laws and order, kindness, and good deeds are disdained. life has no value. they hold that individual freedom and choice is important, and that other individuals and their freedoms are unimportant if they cannot be held by the individuals through their own strength and merit.

Just someone tell me what’s going on in this photo.

Very few Americans will directly proclaim that they are in favor of black people being left to the streets. But a very large number of Americans will do all they can to preserve the Dream. No one directly proclaimed that schools were designed to sanctify failure and destruction. But a great number of educators spoke of ‘personal responsibility’ in a country authored and sustained by a criminal irresponsibility. The point of this language of 'intention’ and 'personal responsibility’ is broad exoneration. Mistakes were made. Bodies were broken. People were enslaved. We meant well. We tried our best. 'Good intention’ is a hall pass through history, a sleeping pill that ensures the Dream.

💑 Ten Years 💑
  • Molly: *traipses into the morgue, drinking coffee*
  • Sherlock: *standing beside the body, grinning* Ah, Molly...I have a present for you.
  • Molly: *frowns* You finally snapped?
  • Sherlock: *shakes his head; gestures at the body*
  • Molly: *sighs; approaches and examines the body, shrugs* Looks like a simple domestic- *stops to look closer*
  • Sherlock: *smirks*
  • Molly: *confused* That's so weird.
  • Sherlock: Mmm...
  • Molly: *shakes her head* Do you remember that case with the murdered single mother, trying to get an education, a better life for her and her little boy? And her mother just wanted her to get married and settle down?
  • Sherlock: *nods* The mother murdered her and blamed it on her grandson. Convinced him he was to blame.
  • Molly: *chuckles* That was my first job here. I found the blood on her ring...do you remember?
  • Sherlock: *softly* You like your present, then?
  • Molly: ...
  • Molly: *glances at the victim*
  • Molly: *incredulous horror* YOU RECREATED THAT CASE?
  • Sherlock: *shrugs* Not exactly, some details are different *pauses* I'm not the murderer, by the way.
  • Molly: *gaping* B-but why?
  • Sherlock: *bites his lip* Well, you've been here ten years today *steps closer* Ten years of invaluable assistance *tucks a strand of hair behind her ear* Ten years of back-breaking, hard work *strokes her cheek* Ten years since we first met *cups her chin* Ten years of your undying friendship *kisses her cheek*
  • Molly: *blushes* Oh...I-I don't even remember what I had for breakfast this morning.
  • Sherlock: *chuckles* Jam on toast.
  • Molly: *giggles* Show off.
  • Sherlock: *tilts his head* Hmm. We're having lunch, the same thing we had on that day. Oh and... *removes her glasses from his pocket* wear these.
  • Molly: *takes the glasses; smiles* You've thought of it all, haven't you?
  • Sherlock: *shrugs* Mmm, there is one thing I couldn't quite get right *lifts her hand and kisses her engagement ring*
  • Molly: *wraps her arms around him for a cuddle* I wouldn't say that.
