Iggy: Okay, you guys probably already know this, but my bro, Ludwig is now out on his solo vacation! Soooooo, until he gets back, I get to answer whatever’s left in the ol’ inbox!

Roy: Hey, what am I? Chopped liver?!

Iggy: Roy?! What’re doing here?!

Roy: Y’thought you were gonna do this alone? Lutz asked me to fill in for him until he returns. Couldn’t let my best bro down!

Iggy: Ugh, of course he would! Fiiiiine, let’s just get these over and done with!

All Aboard The Jeepney

A Taste Of The Philippines In The East Village

If there’s anything I’m more passionate about than fashion, it’s definitely my Filipino heritage. Growing up in a Filipino American family in the US meant that traditional food was the gateway into learning about my culture. From hearty meat stews to refreshing shaved iced drinks, I’ve discovered Filipino dishes one by one in my mother’s kitchen.

In the spirit of discovery, I’m excited to share with you Taste Buds, a new YouTube series presented by Ford, that highlights local hot spots around the country one city at a time. To celebrate the release of the show’s latest episode, Taste Buds: Brooklyn, I’m highlighting one of my favorite eateries in my East Village neighborhood of Manhattan. Check out the new episode below and then read on to learn more about Jeepney.

Dining at Jeepney, a Filipino gastropub, is an experience that feels authentically Filipino throughout. When you first walk in your eyes will be drawn towards the bright yellow bar with its playful island-themed decor. Continuing into the back you’ll find the main dining area clad in sheet metal walls adorned with pinup posters that mimic the vehicles of Jeepney’s namesake. Beyond that there’s a fenced in outdoor patio area with picnic tables that’s perfect for warm weather dining. The ambiance alone, however, isn’t the only thing that’ll get you excited. Almost immediately upon entering you’ll notice the tantalizing smell of Chef Miguel Trinidad’s dishes that’ll have you curious to see the menu. And don’t worry if you don’t understand some of the items listed, the friendly servers are more than enthusiastic to walk you through your first Filipino meal.

On my last particular visit to Jeepney, I came for lunch with my friend Serena, to sample some of the latest offerings. Let’s just say the food did not disappoint and that I probably should have brought an extra friend to help us eat the generous portions. Really not complaining though… Here'a a quick run down of what we ordered and why we loved it:

  1. The Chori Burger - This Filipino spin on the American classic substitutes a longganisa patty for traditional beef and comes topped with a fried egg. Basically heaven on a plate!
  2. Banana Ribs - With meat that just falls off the bone and is soaked in banana ketchup, you’ll be too busy eating to care that you stained favorite t-shirt.
  3. Chixsilog - The pan fried chicken, garlic fried rice, and fried egg combo was my favorite breakfast as a kid, and guess what, it’s even better for lunch as an adult.
  4. Pancit Malabon - When all that fried rice just isn’t enough in the way of carbs, it’s time to switch to this rice noodle dish topped with shrimp, calamari, and a romesco sauce. You’re going to want to squeeze a little lemon on this too for the perfect touch!
  5. Warm Pinakbet Salda - You didn’t think we forgot about our greens did you? It’s not your typical salad, but with squash, sauteed eggplant, and steamed beans in a shrimp paste broth you won’t even notice you’re eating a “salad.”

Curious to see what else NYC has to offer? Tune into the newest episode of Taste Buds: Brooklyn, where the show takes you across the East River from Manhattan to showcase some of BK’s coolest hot spots.

Jeepney is located at 201 1st Avenue, NY NY 10003

Mouthwatering burgers you need to try right now

There’s nothing better than a big, juicy, mouthwatering burger, right? Lucky then, that we’ve gathered our expert knowledge on these culinary delights and put together a list of the best in Dubai.

9 - Manhattan Grill Steakhouse - Grand Hyatt, Umm Hurair
If you’re venturing out for a fancy meal (but you secretly just want a great burger) steer your fellow diners to this spot. An elegant, classy venue which serves up an unbelievable burger. Get excited about the Manhattan Wagyu Beef Burger, served with beetroot, jalapeño, onions, avocado, and Idaho potato fries. How much? The Manhattan Wagyu Beef Burger with fries costs AED125.

8 - Rivington Grill - Souk Al Bahar, Downtown Dubai
A fancy burger in an even fancier setting.—the food here never disappoints and neither does the slick view of the fountains this snazzy spot has. Get stuck into the famous Rivington Burger, with home-smoked cheddar, Caprice Club Sauce and skinny fries, and you won’t be let down.
How much? The burger and side costs AED 120.

7 - Fume - Pier 7, Dubai Marina
While you’ll love the atmosphere of this spot, their burgers are an awesome match, too. Go for the Pure Black Angus Cheeseburger, with spicy roasted tomato mayonnaise, brioche bun and fries. For an extra treat, try the chocolate brownie dessert—sinful, but totally worth the few extra minutes in the gym.
How much? This cheeseburger and fries will set you back AED 89.

6 - Claw BBQ Crabshack & Grill - Souk Al Bahar, Downtown Dubai
If you’re looking for a classic American hamburger, come here. They use excellent quality beef, cooked how you like it, with lettuce, tomato and onion served on a lightly toasted bun. We got ours with extra American cheese, it can get messy so maybe bring a bib for this one.
How much? The Classic Hamburger served with fries costs AED75.

5 - The Meat Co - Souk Madinat Jumeirah
It may cost a few more dirhams than the other burgers on our list but we can guarantee you won’t be disappointed. You can’t go wrong with any of their gourmet burger options which are all 100% pure beef, seasoned, basted and flame-grilled. If you can’t decide which to choose, let us do the hard work for you: Go for the Wagyu Burger, our particular favourite.
How much: Wagyu Burger with fries and onion rings: AED 120.

4 - Elevation Burger - SZR, Trade Centre Area
Their soft, fresh buns and mouthwatering, juicy burgers are proof that Elevation Burger was going to make our list. Any fast food haters out there, you need to try one of these before you pass judgment. We love the Fiery Burger, which is made up of organic beef, two slices of American cheese, jalapeños and house sauce. How much? This burger costs AED 39, fries are separate but we still think it’s a pretty decent value.

3 - Belgian Beer Cafe - Souk Madinat Jumeirah
The Belgian-style Cheeseburger here is definitely one of our favourites. It’s basically just beef and truffle mayonnaise - amazingly simple but the taste packs some serious punch. Choose any side to go with your burger, although we totally recommend the onion rings.
How much? The Belgian-style Cheeseburger costs AED 85.

2 - Salt at Kite Beach, Umm Suqeim
We came for the cool food truck setup but we stayed for the ridiculously good burgers. Choose one of their double wagyu burgers if you’re looking for an extra big feed. This is made up of wagyu beef, melted cheese and pickle slices, all served up on a buttered bun. YUM.
How much? The Double Salt Burger costs AED 45.

1  - Jones the Grocer - SZR, Al Safa
You’ll have to search long and hard for someone who has a bad thing to say about the Jones Wagyu Burger. Freshly minced and marinated wagyu, beef bacon, mixed leaf salad and cheese with Jones Bois Boudran sauce in a brioche bun. Add the caramelised onions and truffle mayonnaise and you’ll have yourself Dubai’s best burger.
How much? Served with fries, the Jones Wagyu Burger will set you back AED 79.

i love the weather when you’re sitting on a park bench with a chicken burger and a sprite and the air smells like a brewing storm and a flock of wild birds.
but the storm has the curtesy not to let down just yet because you’re about to go read a book in the library and didnt bring a jacket for the walk home.
i like lying in bed at home and feeling the thunder vibrate through me and tasting the drops of rain that have escaped through the fly screen on my window.
i love thunder still demanding to be present and heard, even when it’s already raining.
i want to want to feel present and heard even when it’s already raining.
