Too Easy

Sometimes the word love isn’t quite as simple as we make it out to be. Its single syllable shoves off our tongues, leaving us wishing there were another word to describe a feeling so strong it’s no longer equally applicable to pizza and beer – because those loves are simple. If you spill your beer, you get another one. And that pizza.

Really, there’s nothing you can say about the pizza.

Things like foods and beverages are easy to love, because they stay the same and they never disappoint. You know what to expect, and you get it. Loving another human is never quite as simple as that, though, because humans are, well, human. They make mistakes and they hurt you, they frustrate and infuriate you, and yet you still … love them. The love we profess for pizza or beer is a fairly fickle thing – although we may profess love for the general category, our particular favorites within that category may change at least once a year, if not once a week.

Loving another human, though, is something different. It’s not something you can shrug off in favor of a new flavor – it’s a commitment to someone whose feelings for you hopefully roughly equate in weight and volume to yours for them.

Perhaps that feeling deserves more. A bigger word, perhaps – one of adequate syllabic heft, requiring advanced pronunciation precision. A word as weighty and difficult to say as it is to feel. Because “love” just ain’t cuttin’ it.
