we can only gain from it

What Sarah said at her book signing

- Rhys’s last name is Hotpants (then she retracted and said his name might be revealed in future novels).

- She doesn’t think Aelin and Rhys would fight if they met, they have to much in common. If they met Aelin would be like “I’m too distracted by how attractive you are.” If they got into a verbal fight Aelin would win. Her mean streak runs deeper than Rhys’s. Then she’d feel guilty because “he’s too pretty to cry.”

- If Amren and Manon were tapped in an elevator they’d have a stare off until they both got too hungry to continue. Manon would tear off the elevator’s ceiling panels with her claws and Amren would climb the wires. Then they’d go get a cup of blood together.

- Sarah likes to write “not nice” female characters like Amren and Nesta because she doesn’t think she was always the nicest person in high school. She also believes that no one is ever completely sweet and kind all the time, we’re all a mix of good and bad (except her sister-in-law who is apparently the nicest person in the world).

- She wrote 20 000 words of Tower of Dawn her first day sitting down to write it.

- Tower of Dawn will be told from the perspectives of Chaol, Nesryn and Yrene.

- If her characters order Starbucks Amren would be super strong expresso, Rhys would get a latte with pretty foam art and Feyre wouldn’t drink coffee but she’d get English breakfast tea.

- If she could bring her characters anywhere in our world she would bring Feyre to the Louvre. She would just watch Feyre look at the art for hours. She would bring Aelin to the Metropolitan Opera House, which is her favorite place in the world.

- Page 666 of ACOWAR was completely coincidental. When she was reading the version with numbered pages for the first time she burst out laughing when she saw what happened on that page.

- She refused to answer who has the longest wingspan but says she might throw it in at the end of the very last novel. Until then we can choose for ourselves who has the longest ‘wingspan’ and the best ‘flying skills’.

- It upsets her that people feel like they need to apologize for reading fantasy or romance novels. She gained most of her knowledge of healthy romantic and sexual relationships from those kinds of books.

- She still has her copy of Pride and Prejudice from ninth grade where she drew hearts and wrote Sarah Darcy in gel pen.

- Throne of Glass wasn’t a huge success right away. If Crown of Midnight hadn’t sold well she only would have gotten three books.

- She went off on a really long but super sweet tangent about how much she loves her husband. She says that despite common fandom belief he is not the inspiration for Rhys (their only similarities are that they have dark hair and are tall) but their relationship did inspire the tone of Feysand’s relationship, especially the importance placed on equality and partnership. Josh was smiling like crazy the entire time to the point where Sarah had to stop because she kept laughing at his “goofy grin.”

- The very first scene of ACOTAR was inspired by the first song of the Princess Mononoke soundtrack while the last scene of ACOWAR was inspired by the last song on the soundtrack. This was a coincidence.

- Her dog sleeps in Sarah’s office while she writes. She goes there after her walk every morning like she’s going to work.

- She gets inspiration for her female characters through music. She gets inspiration for her male characters by trying to figure our how to get their shirts off in a rainstorm.

Ummm… yeah, about that, Allura… read the captions

So. It seems that the Galra Empire not only did not get crippled by the loss of its leader, it became stronger, more effective, more ruthless under Lotor’s reign.

Sure, Zarkon’s gone. The King is Dead.

But, Lotor is here. Long Live the King!

Which means, that the Paladins only made things worse for the galaxy as a whole, while trying to make them better.

Which, again, means one thing: Shiro’s sacrifice was for nothing.

OK, let’s back up.

There are many interesting things to say about Lotor right now from the sneak peak of him we had yesterday (cowface included). Many hints about what he’s like as a character and most importantly, as a leader.

Mainly his speech:

“My father built our empire on the backs of resemblance. The universe can no longer doubt our strength. Each ally gained only makes us stronger. All those who continue to stand against us… will be crushed.”

The most interesting and the most important thing to take from this speech is that Lotor is the Empire’s Shiro.

Look what he preaches: “our empire”, “resemblance”, “ally”,  “stronger”,  “strength”… not only what Zarkon himself used to preach is there, “strength”, but something new, something Zarkon never counted on and even spat at:

Unity.

Lotor literally says that the more allies the Galra have, the stronger they get. He introduces strength in numbers, in unity. FiveMany becoming one in order to crush their opponents. That united, the Garla Empire is strong. That working together is the key to strength and success.

Remind you of anyone?

(there it is)

Yeah…

(There are more examples in S1&2, so go ahead and rewatch. They’re EVERYWHERE.)

And the most baffling of all in this speech, maybe:

It implies that races other than the Galra are important to the Galra Empire as well.

Try and wrap your mind around this: Lotor basically supports acceptance of anyone who wants to join the Galra Empire as an ally who gives the most important virtue said Galra Empire holds dear: Strength.

“United, we are stong against our enemies.”

That’s Lotor’s speech in a nutsell.

Which is what Shiro has been preaching since day one in the Paladin duty. And indeed, was what made the Paladins indeed strong enough to beat Zarkon:

…yup.

Hey, it’s a reboot of a shounen series. What did you expect?

And now, we see that the enemy brings in this virtue along, unifying whoever is an ally to the Galra and welcoming them.

Check this out:

“My father built our empire on the backs of resemblance.”

Wait, “resemblance”? Between who and what?

Taking into consideration his line about “allies”, it’s easy to see who and what: between the Galra and others.

Lotor has the gall (and the brilliance) to call the conquering dictatorship of the Galra a way to unify the galaxy under one flag, to find resemblance amongst different kinds of myriads of races with miryads of differences and even appreciate said differences, since they aid into becoming a stronger unit.

Lotor preaches union, cooperation, and working together as a team empire to defeat enemies.

It’s basically, “Either you’re with us, or against us.”

…jfc

Going away from all the real life history for a while and back to the idea of unity Lotor preaches, yes, you understood correctly:

The Galra Empire just found its Shiro. Its inspirational, motivational, charismatic, good leader… in Lotor.

Keith isn’t Lotor’s mirror. Neither is Lance. It’s Shiro.

And how fitting, according to the Rule of Drama (things will become worse the worst possible time for our heroes), that the Empire’s Shiro appears…

…when the Paladins’ Shiro goes AWOL.

Oh, and another nifty parallel:

Shiro made a name for himself in the Galra Empire by being a “Champion” gladiator in the arena…

…a very familiar-looking arena.

…where Lotor firstly appears to the public and earns its favour by beating his opponent:

So, a fighter as good as the Legendary Champion gladiator, who reveals himself as the son of their fallen Emperor, who preaches that unity is the key to strength?

You can bet your butt the crippled and in dire need of leadership Galra Empire will believe and latch onto him.

In the 80s cartoon, Lotor was a joke of a villain.

Here?

He’s absolutely terrifying and realistic. And effective.

So, our own heroes, with their own lynch taken away God knows where and why, they’re absolutely vulnerable towards this kind of opponent.

But hey, we’re only in the 3rd season in September, meaning that at least, even if it means they’ll go in hiding, they WILL face him at some point and they WILL survive (hopefully). It means that someone WILL rise to the occasion and at least TRY to be Shiro’s shadow and unify the Paladins once again.

(there are MUCH more…)

BIG No.

Hey, how about…?

(there are more…)

Good brains for teamwork and strategy, but…

…those self-confidence issues cripple him too much.

Next?

Much warmer.

Too bad the creators said that she won’t pilot a lion.

So, what happens? Who will face Lotor?

Keith.

WAIT.

Yes, Keith is the least equipped to face such an opponent and be a leader of… anything.

 Yes, Keith will face Lotor.

Exactly because he’s the least suitable for the job.

You see, season 3 is the first part of the middle of the series (6 in total). And what happens in the middle of a story?

The darker sequel.

The Empire Strikes Back (literally, in our case).

Keith wil try to be the Black Paladin, the leader, Lotor’s opponent… and he will fail.

The heroes will be damaged, left weak and defeated. In the Hero’s Journey, this will lead to their Lowest Point, to their Darkest Time.

After all, Lotor needs to prove himself an effective villain. To become so, he needs a win against our heroes and the best way for Lotor to win, is for Keith to be the leader.

Also, this:

The irony is that Lotor (it’s him, jfc) has already shown to Keith that “working together bares better results/success”.

And Keith is gonna fail this one.

Because he’s part Galra, and he’ll feel torn (the opposite of the union Lotor and Shiro preached). I’m fully expecting Lotor to offer Keith an alliance, paralleling the Weblrum adventure.

(And no, sorry, it makes little sense for Lotor’s focus to be Lance. The creators have said that they keep elements of the original intact, so a Keith-Lotor rivalry is to be expected. Only, instead of “Who gets Allura” this will be an ideology and identity battle. Both Keith and Lotor are of mixed race; their connection is already there, Allura or no Allura).

And then, we can wait for seasons 5 and 6 to come, for Keith to FINALLY get proper Character Development (I actually do expect Lance to play a big role in this one; he unified the paladins first, he’ll do it again), stop being coddled by the narrative and rise up to the occasion.

And when he does beat Lotor (or redeems him, who knows), Zarkon and Shiro return for the final battle and the series ends.

In the meantime, Allura sorts out her feelings towards a possible future with possibly innocent Galra existing in the so-called coalition her father had made, Pidge gets her family back, Lance gets confidence, Shiro finds self-value, Keith matures, and Hunk continues to get braver and wiser.

Coran keeps being gorgeous.

Season 2 was… sub-par, to say the least. Let’s hope for a better continuation.

How To: Develop Your Characters

I think we’ve all been in the situation where we want to write about a specific character but have no idea how to approach it. For some reason, despite them being your own character, you have no idea how they would act or what they would say in a certain situation. Sometimes, if you even write about your character(s) at all, when you read it back they seem fake or 2-Dimensional. Unrealistic, if you’d prefer.

In this post, I am going to give you some exercises to get past hollow characters and help develop your writing.

1) Empty Their Pockets

Pretty simple. Think of what your characters would have in their pockets on a day-to-day basis. It doesn’t have to be anything super extraordinary, of course. Just start writing some everyday items down and think about whether your character would have these items in their pockets.

Let’s take a look at one I did for my characters earlier. (sorry that just sounded like something from Blue Peter)

For example:

Character A’s Pockets Contained:

pack of gum, empty pack of cigarettes, library card, NOKIA brick phone

So, here a few things you can tell about Character A simply through the items in their pockets. They visit the library often, meaning that they probably have a high interest in reading (this also could be a sign of intelligence). Judging by the fact Character A has both a pack of gum and cigarettes this could indicate a potential smoking habit, chewing gum is a known way for helping people quit smoking. The pack of cigarettes could show that they are not very good at restricting themselves and could in fact be addicted and finding it hard to cope with smoking. Finally, the NOKIA brick phone shows how they may want to feel connected to people or want to allow their friends/family members/whoever to be able to contact them but have no desire to get the latest model of phone or perhaps believe that having such a device would distract them unnecessarily.

When doing this exercise, think about key objects which portray certain details about your character! Try not to overthink it too much, write whatever comes to mind and put it down on the page! After writing down a couple objects, go back through them and feel free to edit out items you think are unnecessary or add items which you think would suit the character.

2) Go Through Their Daily Routine

Again, another easily explained exercise. Go through a regular day in your character’s life, try and do this exercise as if it was happening before whatever events occur in your story or novel. This way it makes it easier to understand your character before they met a secondary character in the novel or before whatever events happened in your writing which may affect their routine. You don’t need to include every single detail in your description, just brief notes or key events which occur during their day would be fine. You can make it as short or as long as you wish, maybe don’t just do it for one day in your character’s week perhaps do it for multiple days.

Does their routine change during the week? What time do they wake up? What time do they go to sleep? Are they punctual with going to work? Do they do any other activities outside their day-job? These are the kind of things you may want to ask yourself when writing it.

3) Give Them Fears/Phobias

Everyone fears something: whether it be a phobia of spiders or oblivion, everyone has a fear. Giving your character a phobia makes them seem more realistic, it allows your reader to easily relate to your character.

However, just having a phobia for the sake of it doesn’t help develop your character at all. If you give them a terrible phobia of snakes and they come across a snake and suddenly within moments are able to get over their fear just like that, it’s not a phobia. It’s more of a mild inconvenience than anything else. The reader needs to feel convinced by their fears, they would feel more dissatisfied with your writing if they felt the character could dismiss anything and everything than knowing them being confronted by their fears could be a possible problem. Besides, it would give them no reason to motivate or encourage the character if they knew it was impossible for them to be defeated by anything. Still, this does not mean that your character has to be destroyed by their fear. There is a very big difference between simply dismissing your character’s fear and perhaps overcoming it in the future.

An easy way to write your character possibly overcoming their fear in the future is that when they first encounter that fear, add an element of chance or fate into it. For example, if a character were to move to get away from the creature which may be coming towards them; in the process of getting up, they could slip which could cause their legs to lash out towards the creature. The sudden movement may just be enough to scare the creature away, this way it does not appear to the reader as ridiculous or uncharacteristic courage but instead accidental bravery. This sudden revelation that the character’s horrible fear may not be as all powerful as they first thought could be the first step for them to slowly overcome that fear.

Don’t believe me? Let’s think about this for a moment. Imagine your character, let’s call them the Protagonist™, is stuck in a terrible situation. It doesn’t matter what the situation is but let’s say it’s something which involves them being trapped in a room with a snake. I’m going to give you two examples, both involving the same situation.

Example #1:

Protagonist watched with wide eyes as the snake slowly slithered towards them. The snake paused for a moment, it hissed lowly as it waited for Protagonist to move, waiting for the right moment to strike.  Not hesitating for a single moment, they suddenly realised how dire the situation was and jumped to their feet. Their heart pumping wildly as their body was filled with adrenaline, they were terrified yet they had to do something. Protagonist grabbed the nearest thing to them and stepped towards the snake.

“Get away!” They threatened, “Get away!”

Example #2:

Protagonist watched with wide eyes as the snake slowly slithered towards them. The snake paused for a moment, it hissed lowly as it waited for Protagonist to move, waiting for the right moment to strike. The blood in Protagonist’s veins ran cold as the snake grew closer and closer, Protagonist couldn’t move. They begged and screamed on the inside to move away, to get away as far as possible. They had lost all control of their movement, their fear had consumed them. They were frozen to the spot and could only watch as the snake widened it’s jaw, ready to bite down on it’s prey. It widened it’s jaw once, twice - suddenly, Protagonist gained back their instincts. Fleeing seemed like the only realistic option and seconds before the snake could chomp down on their ankle, Protagonist stumbled to their feet. They stumbled backwards into a puddle of water which had pooled behind them and their ankle rolled as they slipped, their legs accidentally lashing out towards the predator. The snake recoiled backwards in shock before deciding that the risk wasn’t worth it: it quickly retreated back to it’s nest, disappearing from Protagonist’s view.

Now, hopefully you see what I mean. I think we can all agree that the second example is a lot better than the first one.

4) Create Their Flaws/Bad Habits

No one is perfect, this includes your characters.

If you’re finding it challenging to think of any flaws, try to think of some bad habits. It doesn’t have to be anything so terribly bad that’s it’s illegal. Think simple when it comes to this exercise. It can range from anything between chewing their nails to swearing.

It might help to try and develop these bad habits into possible flaws or weaknesses. If your character keeps biting their nails that might be a sign of nervousness or anxiety. So, creating bad habits might be a good way to show a certain trait your character may possess.

Flaws are important as well. Let’s be realistic, if no character had any flaws then every single book we read would be filled with a bunch of characters which are exactly the same. Besides, what’s a hero without it’s villain?

So, to give you a few ideas, let’s go back to superheroes. Maybe a hero is so set on doing the right thing that they lose sight of what they want? Perhaps it gets to a certain point where they can’t handle that hollow feeling inside of them that they grow arrogant, selfish or even stubborn? There’s a story for you right there.

Not only that, by giving your characters flaws it is possible that you could work that into your story somehow. This way, not only will you get to show off your amazing character development, but it could also be an exciting point in your storyline.

Write down some ideas, think of flawed personality traits and just write them down! Try to write down at least five straight off the bat, for each one you don’t like you should think about why it doesn’t suit your character. You’re bound to find one flaw you’re happy with!

5) Write Some Scenarios

Now that you’ve developed your characters, go ahead and write them in your story! If you think you still need a bit of practice, try writing something about them being in a certain scenario. It could be anything from ordering their favourite coffee to being trapped in a prison: just write it! Try not to think about it too much, just do whatever feels write (I unintentionally made that pun but i’m not deleting it).

It doesn’t have to be long either, just a couple paragraphs would be fine. Try to focus on body movements and interior thoughts, it would be ideal if your character was on their own in the situation: that way you can get to know the character on their own a lot better. No other characters means no distractions. It’s just you, the wonderful author, and your character - there is an endless amount of possibilities for you!

Have faith in yourself too! Nobody knows your brilliantly developed characters better than you do, so here’s your chance to show them off! If you’d like a second opinion, write something about them and give it to a friend/parent/random stranger etc. to read! If they don’t want to, make them read it anyway!

I hope this helps you all in developing your characters!

Happy writing!

Man, this new worldview introduced is arguably one of the most bizarre pictures Isa has ever painted.

Our chapter is set in the middle of a war zone. Torn bodies plaster the fields, soldiers desperately scramble for the trenches trying to avoid machine gun fire coming from  bunkers. Taking those uniforms and weaponry also into account, its incredible easy to imagine this chapter taking place in some WWI-esque battlefield. And when we as readers in the 21st century think about the “great war”, horrible images of terror, fear, and desperation easily come to mind. War is an awful thing that does awful things to people, and those participating in it are almost guaranteed to be heavily affected by it, and not in a positive way. We can all easily picture terrified soldiers who do not wish to be part of their fight in any way at all. So those are the kind of images we’ll get to see in this new setting, right?

Yeah, nvm.

Perhaps these reactions are more present among the default, expendable foot soldiers, but Isa doesn’t focus on those. Instead, Isa focuses on the new kids, who look even younger than the 104th when they saw their first share of hell in 850. But instead of the horrified faces we spent so much time looking at throughout the Trost arc, we get this

Smiling faces. Normal conversation.

Casual banter between comrades.

Straight up eagerness to run into enemy fire.

I mean…what

These are not the kind of conversations or reactions that would be considered normal in the middle of a warzone. ESPECIALLY NOT FROM KIDS. Those guys aren’t even breaking a sweat (except Uda but thats supposed to be more comical than anything I believe).

I mean, we of course were aware of Marley’s brainwashing, but this is just…a wholly different level, and it certainly doesn’t stop there.

The probably most jarring aspect of this exchange isn’t her eagerness to leave the trenches, but her talk about the numbers at stake. Her argument is entirely based on numbers, she doesn’t even take a second to reflect on her or other peoples lives. The worst part is that she places her own life on the same level as explosives, basically mere ammunition. Of course, in war, people are basically reduced to numbers and weapons when looking at it from a larger scale, but we’re looking at the perspective of a child caught in the middle of it. What the hell.

Look at Gabi running away from the explosion. The running style, facial expression and cry create a borderline comedic scene. In the next panel she’s overly excited about finding cover, completely ignoring the dismantled corpse nearby. This scene is just…utterly grotesque.

Lets compare ch 3 and 91 for a minute here. Eren talks about exterminating the evil titans, which’ll in turn bring humanity freedom. Yay

Here, Gabi talks about obtaining the armored titan to join the anti Paradis force and wipe out the devils there which’ll in turn improve the lives of the Eldians.

Sounds familiar?

Just like at the beginning of the story, the main character has an extremely black and white point of view, desiring to change the world for the better by themselves, in a fight against evil monsters. Eren then spent the next 90 chapters being disillusioned until he finally saw the ocean he desired for so long, only to realize the freedom he sought still lied far away. And I dare say Gabi will go through a smiliar experience sooner or later. This bizarre representation of the war is so jarringly weird, Isa obviously plans to throw things around later on.

The difference between Eren’s and Gabi’s viewpoint is that Eren’s viewpoint was based off personal experience and because all his life, he felt the direct influence of the titans. Gabi’s opinion of Paradis’ population stems only from the brainwashing received by Marley’s warrior program. And this can be felt throughout the entire chapter. The carelessness of the kids, their smiles and casual talk, as well as their inexistant regard for human life all seem to originate from the warrior program. Not only does she make a difference between the “good” mainland and the “bad” island Eldians, the value of the human life is entirely lost in the process, most likely to facilitate genocide

Remember Bert’s and Reiner’s shocked faces? They gain even more weight now that we actually got to witness their mental state before the attack.

If there is one thing I’m taking away from this chapter is that Marley are seriously grade A douchebags. If anything, 91 further emphasizes the fact that, even though a return of the Eldian empire is not a desirable thing, Marley can’t keep existing the way it is if we seek an ending that ultimately ends of an improved situation compared to 845.

To: KPop Tumblr / From: An Angry Black Girl

WARNING: This is a RANT. If you don’t want to read this, or you don’t want to have to sit through my deepest disappointment and the annoyance that has been dwelling within me for the longest about this; please just scroll right past this and you will be a-okay.

- Admin Dayna

Okay so, I know I’ve mentioned before that I wanted to avoid the topics of racism and culture appropriation within K-Pop because the list goes on forever, and as a black girl with anxiety and depression, having to constantly speak up against these things get extremely tiring and weigh heavy on me. But the reason why I’m deciding to write about this now is because I’ve been seeing certain things floating around in the K-Pop side of tumblr that’s quite honestly being left untouched and I just… I really can’t sit back and let it not be known.

I want to first start off with my deepest concern for the constant validation black girls seek on tumblr about whether or not so-and-so or such-and-such Idol group likes black girls. We see videos on Tumblr and YouTube quite often of compilations of idols interacting with black girls, overthinking and overplaying said interactions/conversations and romanticizing it to gain some sort of self-worth from said videos. As if these girls need confirmation that they are beautiful and can be loved by anyone. Which really hurts because what other race of girls has to sit down and ask themselves if the person they’re interested in likes their race and not them, themselves. The only time that I see anything in regards of afro-fans within the K-Pop side of Tumblr is when the blog specifically caters to said race – which truly bothers me because then my race often times get sexualized in said blogs. We should be able to intermingle no matter what our races. POC girls are of the norms, bruh like tf?

Which leads me to this topic: Black Girls – or more so Black Culture – are used as props within K-Pop so often that when I try to express my distaste towards a certain idol or a certain music video, I get backlash for it from stans because they’re so blinded by either; A) The need to be loved and noticed by their biases despite the fact that their bias is using them as an object to enhance whatever aesthetic, concept, or audience they’re trying to appeal to, or B) the aggression or culture appropriation either doesn’t affect them or is so trivial (yet very wrong) that it ends up being dusted under the rug because “they don’t know better”.

But the thing is, some of these idols have been overseas, worked overseas, lived overseas, that they have been exposed to these things already, so the truth of the matter is, they do know better. So many idols have been called out for saying certain words (for example dropping the word nigga around as if they know what it’s like to be followed around a store just in case you decide to steal something, or to have an irrational fear of authority figures just in case they go ape shit and decide to shoot you unarmed) or carrying out certain actions (for example, painting their skin black and over drawing their lips, and pretending to know what it’s like to struggle out in these streets and use our means of coping – music – as a source of entertainment and costume). It is 2017, they have social media, and so many idols before them have made these mistakes before that there is just no fucking excuse anymore.

NONE.

What lead up to this rant was the fact that Jay-fucking-Park, took a revolutionary name brand and rode it out for his own fucking label. Jay Park has taken NWA (Niggas with Attitude) and turned it into his own NWA (New Wave Attitude) and I am incredibly pissed that he would do that because Jay Park SHOULD KNOW BETTER.

The entire purpose of Niggas with Attitude was to reclaim and expose the hardships, stereotypes, and struggles of black people who find themselves cornered and stuck in the ghettos that they were forced into, and explain to the mass audiences why black people are “always angry”. Why black people “always steal”. Why black people “always do drugs”. It’s because majority of us don’t have a choice. We don’t have the same resources and do not know anything beyond the struggles of the streets because we’ve been cornered and kept there all our lives.

Now here is Jay Park, a man who has been exposed to black culture, knows black people, love black people, taking such a powerful name brand and turning it into some whimsical ass whatever-the-fuck for the hype or the wave and shit – completely dismissing the historical importance of the original NWA in music.

This shit ain’t no fucking joke. This shit ain’t to be messed with, b. Gangsta rap, hip-hop – just rap in general isn’t a fucking game. It comes from starvation. It comes from self-hate. It comes from poverty, and degradation, and discrimination. Hip-Hop and Rap became what it is because black people were too broke to afford instruments and shit – we had to use our voices. Because music was all we got. From the slave trade to now! It ain’t shit for people to be twisting up for their own fun like this.

Put some respect on our names or get the fuck out!

Now we got people like fucking Keith Ape running around snatching up Atlanta’s trap music calling it “noisy rap”. We got fucking Taeyang saying “he wanna experience black people’s pain”. We got Jackson and Jooheon making a fucking fool of themselves (bless they souls man, don’t even come for me because Jooheon is my ultimate bias, y’all know this. i fucking love him and Jackson but they were wildin’) claiming that Jooheon is like “the Korean Kendrick Lamar”. Like the fuck they know about Kendrick Lamar? The fuck they know about “The Blacker the Berry, the Sweet the Juice”? The fuck they know about “Nagus to Niggas”? The fuck they know about “How Can I paint a picture, when the color blind is hanging you?”

What does Jay Park know about “Fuck the Police”?

Black people aren’t props.

Stop protecting y’all biases and get with the shits bruh.

Anyways, I hope y’all have a blessed day. Love you.

2) WHILE in space a FIRE starts in the outside part…. no offense but uh,,, theres no oxygen in outta space? how would it burn? No logic

3)Tucker ended up mayor??????????

4) Danny gave up his powers and was totally stupid? but also how he gave up his powers is totally illogical? I mean the machine half killed him to begin with, so why didn’t it full kill him this time?

5) I refuse to acknowledge it as canon

6) i mean seriously? fire in space

7) Danny got statues all over the world for being a hero? da fuc

8) Why the skunk hair?

9) Danny knew about Vlad’s robot maddie from an earlier episode so it’s plausable that they’d appear

10) Why would a computer argue with itself???

11) How’d Vlad even get the map? and out in space?

12) When Danny went out int space to fight Vlad (in the very first minutes) why’d they need to open the cabin door thing for him to get out? He’s a ghost?

13)Also? He’s a ghost? He doesn’t need to breath? I’m pretty sure theres and episode where he’s underwater and can breath (or something i could be wrong) but still??? He’s dead?

14) Disastoroid? Really?

15) A blast would have to be freaking MASSIVE to send the ‘disasteroid’ out of orbit from the rings and across the solar system and into earth???

16) with what minimum wage workers deal with a ghost is probably not that big a deal…

17) Why would vlad hire teenagers to do the ghost hunting??? Surely theres more capable adults? Why would Vlad want to deal more with teenagers?

18) Master’s Blasters??????????????

19) I still refuse to acknowledge this as canon

20) Sam’s reaction was kinda really super dumb and not like her at all?

21) Every time Danny tried to best the Masters Blasters he ended up in only his underwhere? That nightmare 101 my friend

22) It is NOT that easy to take down that grass dude ghost man, fuck that

23) The ghost that the Master’s Blasters all took on were ones Danny had extreme trouble, yet the Blasters took them down super easy, which is also nightmare 101, making his self worth crumble

24) Didn’t we just fight that void/dream realm dude Nocturne?? He even appears in Phantom Planet? He’s probably just screwing with Danny

25) Tbh, Sam would’ve been more understanding, same with Jazz, cause like, have you meet those two? Danny was only fourteen, and he was fighting ghosts, not because he overly wanted to, but because he had to as no-one else could, and finally theres someone there who can do it really well, and Danny doesn’t need to anymore? Why shouldn’t he have taken that opportunity to give up his powers?

26) The portal almost didn’t work in the first place? Why the hell would the Fenton’s risk changing it in case it didn’t work again?

27) Seriously? what is up with the skunk hair man?

28) What was with Vlad going ghost like that? He wouldn’t do that? Da fuc

29) Also his plan was shit? Why was his plan so shit? ugh

30) What is a space nomad?

31) How is it that computer Maddie never got around to telling Vlad what the asteroid was made of?

32) What was up with Danny getting his powers back through the many ghostly plasma blasts? It don’t work like that?

33) Why didn’t Danny go to Clock work?

34) Did the guys in white kill Freakshow???

35) TUCKER BECAME MAYOR WHAT THE FUCK????????

I lifted the fork to my mouth, slipping the pice of meat of it. The tough consistency making it hard to chew it, so i let some of the sour wine aid me in swallowing it down. It was silent. Only the quiet steps of the servants and the harsh cutting from my husband-to-be. He was obnoxious, tense, always on guard now days - ever since the news of the pagans arrival. Myself had always thought the subject of these dangerously intriguing, hearing stories of their savage ways. The king had even told me stories about how they had several gods. But what i had liked most with them was how a woman was allowed such power. Such freedom. They where not enslaved and own by their men, something i’ve always dreamt of.

But i wasn’t going to complain. I had more freedom than most women of my country had, thanks to my king - or my sister. Ever since she had gained the favor of king Ecbert, her life and mine had dramatically improved - but for how long?

The king was getting older each day and how knows how long it will be before my fiancee is crowned instead. And with his crowning as king, or freedom is sure to vanish once again.

“Prince Aethelwulf! My prince!”

The loud outburst from one of is foot soldiers broke the silence, immediately catching my fiancee’s attention.

“What?” he answered impatiently.

I felt myself growing more impatient by the second. With such hurry the shaken soldier had, it must be something important.

“They’re here. The pagan king is here.”

Introducing the Septiceye Strength Project !!!

I don’t know about everyone else, but since I’ve joined the Jacksepticeye community I’ve found a lot of something I hadn’t seen in fandoms before: happiness. This community is rampant with positivity, love, and support for one another and I have never felt so welcome in a place.

Random people message me to have a good day, I get Internet hugs when I’m sad, and more. And although we all should be proud of ourselves, I think we have a common denominator to thank: the man himself.

Jack has created a community where no one feels alone and where I and many others can come to find support no matter where they come from, or what their sexuality, gender identity, or race is. It’s incredibly powerful and I can’t speak of it enough to do justice.
Before I get carried away, I want to share some statistics with you:

Over one million people die by suicide worldwide each year.

The global suicide rate is 16 per 100,000 population.

On average, one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds somewhere in the world.

1.8% of worldwide deaths are suicides.

Global suicide rates have increased 60% in the past 45 years.

I wanted to do something to not only show my incredible, inexpressible thanks for Jack but also to help people. I created the SepticEyeStrength Project because of that.

The goal of this project is to not only show our thanks for Jack, but also to show how powerful we are as a community and how we can act as a serious proponent of change.

The goal of the SepticEyeStrength Project is to raise $2,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, as there is no credible international one, by the end of 2017. To do this, I need your help.

Although the plan is to eventually get there, the project must first gain ground. We must get social media recognition (hopefully from the man himself!) and support.

First order of business is that I need a team. A group of people anywhere between 16-25 who want to help. (To apply, you can click this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdJcffzR7HxY1YjYXWDclpkPtG-F0snTgYYYckzXrMOirF14A/viewform)

The second order of buisiness is immediate action. TODAY (February 19th) I am starting the “Messages for Jack” event, using the tag #septiceyestrength as a place to express thanks, love, and anything you want to say to Jack, especially if you have a story where he has helped you through hard times.

In addition, if you want to go the extra mile, post a picture of yourself holding up a sign that has the tag on it and a message to Jack. My goal is to get this tag active enough so that the project can gain ground, so that we can open the charity initiative and hopefully pass our goal.

Whether or not you plan to actually want to get involved, this project and Jack mean the world to me. Please spread this, follow this blog, and follow our twitter @septiceyestrong.

Thank you for reading this, it means a lot to me. Don’t forget to keep being bosses.

The tenth house is an angular house, it pertains to a major focus of the chart. The MC is like a blueprint of the future we dream of, and have the capability of achieving if only we reign in on our Capricorn (ruler of the tenth house) spirit. We are elevated through the Midheaven and develop our single consciousness whilst retaining our understanding of the oneness we all share. It’s the kind of impact we want to have on the world, but through an authentic self expression, so through the 10th you are right we need to connect, it leads to the relationships and extensions of these explored in the ‘clubs and community’ of the 11th house

I think of the 10th house as the employment contract we have made made with the cosmos. Like if Virgo or Mercury is in the 10th house the qualities of Virgo/Mercury will be projected professionally, so they will be a “Virgo for a living”, often we are so passionate about this cause that we would be willing to do it without financial gain. This is self service stitched with service to society….

In the tenth house we are urged to participate in social causes, contour our worldly image and partake in the activism that promotes the betterment of society. It refers to one’s desires career wise, the approach to one’s profession, dreams, and the public image. In many ways it is like a hologram of the face we want to become, and can become, like a swirling energy we emit to the world. People who only know you from a distance may assume you to be this sign.

bookworm-addict  asked:

Hello there! Could you please compare the acotar and acomaf maps? In the acomaf one appear different names, mistly in the night court, because those are places we went to. But there also, on the right page, appears this vallahan land. And i don't remember reading about it. And just below it is a mysterious wood with a big-ass lake and a castle near it. A castle. This land is also just above the wall (where spring should be) but ist not spring. Please look at it and lets talk about this?

You, oh I like you!  I love these maps!

Fandom darling, three things. First, Feyre is not able to read the mural/map in ACOTAR. Second, these maps are Feyre’s perspective. Lastly, acotar is on the left, acomaf is on the right.

Not surprising we learn the most about the night court. What surprises me the most though, is the Spring Court mural has no idea about the Illyrian territory. We are not only missing the entire forest and much of the mountains, we are missing ISLANDS. Speaking of Islands, the night court sure has a lot of them.

South of Under the Mountain, I am sadden by the fact that we only learn of Adriata. Feyre spends at least 5 months in the Spring Court and she cannot even tell you where the manor is or the largest city.

We gain a castle in Hybern

In the Faerie Realms we are all still asking about that lovely castle. For some reason it reminds me of Rivendell (lotr). The only thing I can think of, is that Feyre noticed it on the mural.

We learn about Vallahan and it’s boarder, not because Feyre has been there, but because Ianthe spent the last 50 years there. Hiding from Amarantha or more likely assisting the king.

The Mural in the Spring Court (p.114-115, acotar) a.k.a the Story of Prythian, had multiple panels. The first panel was of the cauldron creating the world and a map of their world. The second panel is of a battlefield, one that gives Feyre feelings. The third panel is the result of that battle. The forth panel is the map of the much-reduced faerie realm.

The faeries conceded a lot of land to the humans. Think about that for a moment, refugee faeries that needed a new home north of the border. Refugee faeries that could side with Hybern just to have their homes returned to them.

Mentor Arduine: Good morning, class.
Sapling #1:
Greetings, Mentor.
Sapling #2:
Good morning.
Sapling #3:
Let the learning begin!
Mentor Arduine:
We’ve reached the proper moment in your training to discuss the Ventari Tablet.
Mentor Arduine:
Nothing is more central to our culture and our virtue.
Mentor Arduine: Who would like to describe their thoughts on the first tenet of Ventari’s Tablet?
Sapling #1: It says, “Live life well and fully, and waste nothing.”
Sapling #1: Ventari loved us, and so we should love ourselves. He’s telling us we’re worthy of life.
Sapling #1: We shouldn’t waste our lives or ourselves. We should give our all.
Mentor Arduine: I cannot argue with that. Well done.
Mentor Arduine:
Who will interpret the second of Ventari’s tenets for us?
Sapling #2: The second tenet says, “Do not fear difficulty. Hard ground makes stronger roots.”
Sapling #2: In other words, that which is gained through difficulty is a better prize than that which is gained easily.
Sapling #2: With opposition, we discover strengths we didn’t know we had. The prize thus doubles in value.
Mentor Arduine:
Excellent answer.
Mentor Arduine: The third of Ventari’s tenets says, “The only lasting peace is the peace within your own soul.”
Sapling #1: I know this one. It means that nobody else can make you happy. Only you can make you happy.
Sapling #3:
It also means that, no matter how far you travel, you can never get away from yourself.
Mentor Arduine:
(laugh)

In light of recent weeks where I have noticed a severe influx within the fanfic community of readers, generally under an anonymous guise, who have been messaging fic writers some terribly rude things in regards to demanding and or begging for updates, here are some pointers to educate the non-writer community:

  • Just because the demanding message is sent in complete caps lock to imply “enthusiasm” does not dampen the fact that the nature of the message is any less demanding. At the end of the day, if you are saying: Update (insert title) already, I need it! or When are you finally going to post (insert title) then that is all the writer is going to see, no matter if the message is sent in all caps lock, all lower case, or in leet speak. If you as the reader cannot see and understand that such a sentence is demanding and consider that as the only way you can express your “enthusiasm” to a writer, then do not even bother sending a message in the first place.
  • Begging is not a compliment. It is fantastic to know that our readers are excited about future updates, but there are at least a hundred different ways that you can express that without the begging connotations. Just because you “need” this update, or “need” to know what happens will not suddenly encourage the writer to create the content faster. If anything, it will stress them out and put the pressure on them to upload something that ninety-five percent of the time, they will not be happy with due to the simple fact that they churned it out on a late night and four cups of coffee to satisfy a reader who felt entitled by typing out a string of demanding words, ticked anonymous and clicked send.
  • If you have a right to complain about us being slow in our updates, then we, as the content creators, have the full green light to go ahead and complain about the demands. The issue that I have noticed the most with this whole situation is the moment that the writer sits down and posts a response in regards to how the demands are making them stressed, upset, or angry, they will almost instantly receive a sudden torrent of messages telling them why their feelings are invalid, why they should be grateful that their readers are so excited for them to update, etc. As soon as the writer fights back, the readers suddenly pipe up to shut them down like the writer is a disobeying pet, and the reader is a displeased owner who scolds them for supposedly biting the hand that feeds them. And that, my friends, is seriously fucked up.

  • Understand that there is a solid reason why the writer has not updated a particular series, or they have not yet posted the story that they might have previously discussed. The reason they have not already posted it is not because they enjoy making you suffer, nor because they are an awful, terrible person who wishes to see how long you will cling on to their every post until you get tired and let go. If a writer has not updated a specific series or story, it is because they are not inspired by it, they are still planning it, or they are making alterations to the plot to better and intensify the reading experience. Asking them to update it is not going to suddenly fill them with the desire to write that particular story, so please do not think that.

  • Remember that writers are human beings. We are not robots with the sole purpose to write and update our blogs. We have lives, jobs, studies, and social lives to uphold outside of writing fan fiction, just like you do. Content creating is a hobby. Sure, lots of us continue to pursue that into a future career, though for now, on our blogs, this is sheerly something that we do in our own free time for free. Before you think to demand us of something that we gain no monetary value from, think again.

  • Deleting these sorts of demanding messages is only an alternative; the true solution is that they stop being sent altogether. Stop trying to tell writers to ignore these messages, and rather, stop sending them in the first place. We can delete, block and ignore, but the messages will always come back and the moment we say something about them, we get sweet little messages trying to put us into our supposedly righteous place because we stepped out of line and spoke our true feelings for once. May I reiterate my statement from three bullet points back by saying that is seriously fucked up.

All in all, please, before you think to send a writer a message in regards to one of their stories, learn what the difference is between being demanding and being supportive. There are ways to ask a writer about their progress on a story or series without blatantly begging or demanding them of its current status. If you wish to support a writer and encourage them to continue with the updates, send them positive, complimenting messages about the piece by detailing how you adored the story, what elements of it hooked you, etc. instead of not even hinting your enjoyment in the slightest through a message that bluntly states: When is the next update?

This is a simple matter of mutual respect between the readers and the writer. You scratch my back, and I will scratch yours. I can tell you for sure that any writer would much rather no message at all than one that demands them to update. So, if you are thinking to send in something that blatantly requests them to update the next chapter or post a new story, then close the browser and walk away because we do not want your twisted concepts of enthusiasm and support. Silence is more comforting than that.

Writing Tips #8: Character Foils

Greetings, fellow writers, and welcome back! Today we’ll be covering one of my favorite aspects of writing: character foils.

Dictionary.com defines a “foil” as “a person or thing that gives contrast to another.” (Dictionary.com also defines foil as a very thin sheet of metal, a verb meaning to “prevent the success of” something, and a “flexible four-sided rapier having a blunt point.” But let’s focus on character foils).

Contrast is a critical element of writing, allowing a reader to draw mental lines around characters/settings/situations, as well as creating opportunities for those same readers to draw parallels within a given work. Character foils can be used to create these areas of contrast in their personality, choices, and moral alignment. Some common types of foils include hero/sidekick, mentor/student, leader/enforcer, and so on. There are several broad categories for character foils, including:

1. Diametrically opposed foils: Often the most dramatic type of foil, this variety relies on a pair of characters who are (if you’ll forgive the cliche) as different as night and day. If one character is pure and virtuous, the other has a checkered past and an unreliable moral compass. If one is quiet and studious, the other is brash and impulsive. If one is rich and airheaded, the other is lower-class and clever.

These foils work best with characters who are going to be spending a lot of page-time together, as the contrasts between them will naturally lead to conflict, which is inherently interesting.

Take Locke and Jean from The Lies of Locke Lamora. Locke is a clever street-thief with a flair for the dramatic, and while he can prove a wily opponent in a fight, he’s not a major physical threat. Jean, his closest ally and friend, is book-smart and practical, with a more reliable moral compass and the strength to beat the hell out of pretty much anyone. Their relationship works for two reasons. First, there is always some sort of interpersonal conflict going on between them, often arising from their contrasting personalities. Second, they both have something the other person needs. (Incidentally, those two qualifications are also how you make any fictional romantic relationship work. But that’s another lesson).

Another example of this kind of foil is Kurogane and Fai from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Kurogane is grumpy, straightforward, and has an ascending moral arc. Fai is cheerful, deceptive, and has a descending moral arc (I mean, they both turn out all right in the end, but for the first two-thirds of the story, their character arcs are trending in reverse). They’re also very visually distinct from each other, with opposing color schemes and builds (not so important in prose, but very important in visual mediums like manga). There’s a reason most of the TRC fandom ships these two, and it has a lot to do with their status as foils to each other.

2. Single-trait contrast foils: This type of foil is a little different, in that the characters involved tend to be quite similar, but differ in one story-critical way. These foils are typically used in a  much more limited way than diametrically opposed foils, and can be quite helpful when you want to highlight a particular aspect of a character, rather than their whole personality. Often, this foil consists of one main character and one supporting character.

To use Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle as an example again, we have the characters Syaoran and Ryuuo. They have several traits in common (determination, sincerity, idealism), but they differ in their mannerisms. Syaoran is reserved and formal, while Ryuuo is energetic and casual. Their friendship works because their similarities bring them together, and their differences complement one another. This allows Syaoran, our protagonist, to grow as a character.

For how to use this foil with rivals/antagonists, let’s look at Zuko and Zhao from season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Both are antagonists to the main ensemble. Both are arrogant. Both want to capture the Avatar. Where they diverge is in their motivation. Zuko wants to restore his honor so he can return home and gain his father’s acceptance. Zhao wants glory. We, the audience, only begin to see Zuko in a sympathetic light in episode three, when we first see Zuko and Zhao interact with each other. He’s still unquestionably a villain, but in contrasting him with a cruel, glory-seeking adversary, the creators of the show make Zuko appear as the lesser of two evils.

3. Shadow Archetypes: This type of foil is typically used to examine the things a given character dislikes/fears about themselves. Most of the time, when you see a Shadow Archetype, the foil is between the protagonist and one of the antagonists (though rarely the Big Bad). Often, the Shadow Archetype foil involves two characters who have similar histories (birthplace, experiences, abilities), but who ended up in a very different place due to their choices. With this foil, your protagonist is forced to confront an aspect of themselves that they might otherwise ignore or refuse to acknowledge. Let’s look at some examples.

In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Hama acts a Shadow for Katara. Both are from the Southern Water Tribe. Both are powerful waterbenders. Both hold deep grudges against the Fire Nation for taking away their loved ones. When Katara confronts Hama at the end of “The Puppetmaster,” she is essentially confronting a dark mirror of the person she could have become had she allowed bitterness and hatred to consume her. By overcoming Hama, Katara is implicitly making a promise to never let herself fall that far.

Here’s another example, this time from Teen Titans: Slade acts as a Shadow to Robin. Both are ambitious, goal-oriented, and rely heavily on technology and strategy to make up for a lack of superpowers. But Slade is ruthless, willing to cause great harm to others to achieve his goals, while Robin has moral standards which keep him from sinking so low. In confronting him, Robin is forced to acknowledge that they have many similarities. In overcoming him, Robin is able to find peace in himself (Note: with this type of foil, the defeat of the Shadow almost always represents character growth for the good-aligned character).

And those are the three main categories of character foils. Keep in mind that a character can have (or be) a foil to more than one other character at a time, and that the best character foils bring to the surface aspects of each character that might otherwise remain hidden beneath more noticeable traits. As always, thanks for reading, and if you have any questions, feel free to submit a question through my tumblr.

J: Vernon, he has a different feeling from the rest, not only does he have the features of a Westerner, another charm point is the fact that he can speak both Korean and English.

Q: We know that SEVENTEEN has three units, then let’s start a “produce13″! Which unit would you like to form and try out?
J: 96line, Hoshi, Woozi, Wonwoo, because we have members from all three units.

Muggles and class

Something that I don’t feel gets enough focus in fandom is the issue of class - and, importantly, the difference between the working class Snape family, and the middle class Evans family.

Many Snape fans register the double standard of Petunia sneering at Snape for being poor whilst fandom focuses solely on his dismissal of her being a Muggle.

I have also posted several times about the presentation of Sirius, and how I think he has the background and upbringing that Snape may have felt should’ve been his, if only his mother had married a pureblood wizard and not a Muggle.

I’ve seen many posts talking about both Lily and Hermione as Muggleborn witches and the oppression that they face in the wizarding world, but both characters were relatively fortunate; neither were subject to Umbridge’s Ministry regulations, and Voldemort’s grand plans never came off.  Both were embroiled in wars, but both chose to fight for their cause.

They both seemingly had a good time at Hogwarts, and their teachers seemed to like them.  Lily was clever, popular, and became a prefect.  She ended up marrying a pureblood from a very old family.  Hermione was clever and whilst not popular per se, she was friends with the most famous kid in school…and like Lily, became a prefect.  She ended up marrying a pureblood from a very old family, and later became Minister for Magic.

So although the transition between the two worlds could’ve been fraught with danger, and sometimes skirted with it, fortunately neither were particularly viciously oppressed.  Their time at Hogwarts was relatively well protected from such negative sentiment.

But the opposite seems to have been true for Eileen, moving from the wizarding world to the Muggle world.  For whatever reasons, she ends up in a lower class structure, and then neither she nor her son can transcend it.

When Severus moves into the wizarding world, his poverty is obvious through his clothing and his appearance, and it is mocked by others.  It is only as an adult that he moves past this - and arguably, that is due to him gaining a middle class profession and the pay cheque that goes with it…and we know that he only gains that status through exploitation, and not solely on merit.

I hasten to add that it’s not that Lily or Hermione would’ve always sailed through - in some alternate universes, they could’ve ended up in a very poor way.  …but I do think it is striking that their class arguably affords them some protection.

We simply don’t see any kids in Harry’s era who are from similar stock.  The closest we get is Harry himself, who is falsely treated in such a way.  The Dursleys are middle class and should’ve treated him as such, but even though they don’t, Harry’s financial problems are erased the moment he discovers that he’s a wizard.

Otherwise, we’re looking at Ron - but again, his poor background is juxtaposed with a warm and loving family, and magical solutions.  There’s nobody else with quite the depiction that Snape has.

It rather begs the question, quite what would anyone have made of Severus if he’d been Muggleborn and poor?

If any of my followers like Taylor Swift don’t read this.

So at Taylor Swift’s age, Adele has been in a committed loving relationship and is settled down with a son. Has albums about her exes yet we have no idea who any of them are, she’s down to earth, funny and witty and yet mature, classy and sophisticated.

Even Miley Cyrus, (who I personally don’t like but still respect) dealt with the break up with Liam and went a bit nuts in the process but still loved him. Was still supportive of him and close to him. All these years her heart only belonged to him. And now at 23 she’s getting married or is already married to the love of her life and is changing herself for the better for him.

And then we have miss still stuck in high school with her bitch clique, changing boyfriends like the seasons, lying and pushing people down to walk all over them to further her own career. Claims not putting her music on Spotify is taking away profits from other artists while it’s really only for her own gain so she can be richer. Acts like she’s a relatable teenager and always plays the victim when she’s a grown ass businesswomen who actually knows exactly what she’s doing. Moved on from a year long romance in the span of 2 weeks and now their relationship ended.

Now tell me she isn’t the problem.

Tell me about the ocean, Bear.

The Ocean is ancient. When our 4.6-billion-year-old planet was young, it was molten rock wrapped in veils of vapor. Some 3.8 billion years ago, our fiery home cooled below the boiling point of water. The vapor hanging over it condensed into rain that poured down and, over millions of years, filled in the lowest hollows on the planet’s uneven surface, forming the Ocean.

The Ocean is bountiful. All life, as best as we can tell, originated from the seas. It is the great Cradle of Life, from which we all began–all the humans, the caterpillars, the amoebae, the oak trees. Many life-forms around today have never left those rich waters. Though approximately three-quarters of all documented species are found on land, versus one-quarter found in the Ocean, this may only be accurate based on a limited understanding (and therefore ultimately not really true) because…

The Ocean is mysterious. We have explored, mapped, documented, and gained a reasonable understanding of less than five percent (5%) of the oceans. Every time we descend into Her depths, we discover dozens of new species, creatures that we never dreamed of existing. We have found coral reefs–ecosystems we previously believed could only be found in warm, shallow water–thriving in water temperatures just above freezing, at depths where there is no sunlight.

The Ocean is vast. She covers over seventy percent (70%) of our planet’s surface. Her waters account for ninety-nine percent (99%) of all available living space on Earth. One cubic kilometer of water holds over 200 billion gallons of it, and the oceans all total to approximately 1,400 cubic kilometers. Just thinking about the number of zeroes associated with the oceans’ volume in gallons makes my heart race.

The Ocean is powerful. Tsunamis–towering tidal waves–can rise as high as a thousand feet above sea level and have death tolls well above one hundred thousand. Cyclonic storms spawned in Her warm waters can grow to astonishing sizes, and come with great costs–both financial and emotional.

The Ocean is frightening. When I was fourteen, I was swimming and body-surfing at the beach. I was sucked under by a wave, and could not fight my way back to the surface. Time and time again, I tried to come up for a breath, but every time, the current pulled me down again. I fought until my ears were ringing and my vision was reduced to two small discs surrounded by blackness, and then–just as I told myself I was going to drown–the same current that held me under suddenly shot me up into the sunlight. My knees struck sand, and I gasped and sobbed and choked for air amid dozens of squealing, laughing, frolicking beachgoers who had no idea of the ordeal I had just faced. More than ten years later, I still fear drowning more than anything else in the world, and still get nervous swimming at the beach.

The Ocean is dangerous. Not half an hour after my near-drowning, a mere fifty feet down the beach, another swimmer was also hurled up onto the shore. But where I had struck with my knees, he struck with his head. The impact fractured his C2 vertebra, leaving him fully paralyzed for the remainder of his time on Earth. I feel I should mention that the Ocean was not particularly rough that day; in fact, She was rather pleasant to swim in… until She wasn’t.

The Ocean is beautiful and nurturing, old and merciless. She contains multitudes. She will give life just as readily as She takes it, and I love Her and am scared beyond words of Her.

My gods, am I scared of Her sometimes…

But all the same, I love Her.
