my favourite german words are just the names we seem to have chosen for animals. The english language goes to such lengths to create new common names for animals, inspired by Latin and Ancient Greek.
In my head it’s just like
english: that, my friend, is an armadillo
german: bro, it totally looks like it’s wearing a belt. it shall be named beltanimal
english: and this magnificent reptile is what’s known as a tortoise. its water-dwelling cousin is called a turtle
german: … shieldtoad and watershieldtoad
english: this animal is a strange one - unlike any we’ve seen before. henceforth it will be known as platypus.
