June 18th 1815: Battle of Waterloo

On this day in 1815, French troops under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte were defeated by the seventh coalition, led by the British Duke of Wellington and the Prussian von Blücher at the Battle of Waterloo. Napoleon was then forced to abdicate the French throne for the second and last time, thus signalling the end of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars which had raged since 1792. The seventh coalition was finally able to defeat Napoleon’s formidable army at Waterloo when the French - whose backup failed to arrive - were driven from the field by the numerically superior and better commanded allies. The Battle of Waterloo was a major success and victory for the coalition forces, and became a legendary episode in the history of warfare. Despite his ultimate defeat, Napoleon is still considered one of the greatest generals of all time, and a pivotal figure in French history.

1/100 Days of Productivity || 03/01/2017

So today I am starting my (very first!!!) 100 days of productivity because I am an awful student and can think of no other way to motivate myself!

I went to all 4 of my lectures this morning and spent the afternoon planning my calendar / agenda for the month since it’s March and I was due to get organized. This included changing my computer background to this wonderfully cute and helpful wallpaper from @emmastudies !!!

I had a meeting with the Engineering Society for a few hours this evening, and I finished the day by going over some of my calculus notes and working on a few practice problems.

Cheers to a happy and productive March!

History Fact 14/100 - Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington

Wellesley, though he did not often speak of it, was actually born in Dublin, Ireland, the fifth son of the Earl of Mornington. He was treated with thinly veiled contempt by his mother, and was commissioned in the army at the age of 18.

Although he had seen action previously in Flanders, Wellesley’s career truly began in India, after a great victory at Assaye. He returned to England in 1805, now knighted. He briefly divulged into politics, in order to repel attacks on the India record of his brother, then re-joined the army.

Wellesley has been credited with the capture of Oporto, the victory at Bussaco, and the storming of Toulouse. However, his most famous victory is undoubtably Waterloo, the bloody final engagement of the Napoleonic Wars.

Wellesley was a terse and humble man, by many accounts. Unlike his compatriot, Lord Nelson, he was not fond of wearing his military honours on the battlefield, and wore his brown hair cropped. He was, surprisingly, not fond of war, and was deeply upset by the losses sustained at Waterloo.

After the war, Wellesley returned to England and eventually became Prime Minister. He held the position of Commander-in-Chief of the British army until his death.

Re: 14th Light Dragoons and French Hussars. Thanks for the quick Response. However, Dighton is usually highly reliable. He was at Waterloo some days before and after the battle and also in the Peninsula. Usually his work is taken from life viz. his Portraits of spanish guerillas. The Picture showing the Life Guards in cuirass etc. is the exception, it depicts the 1821 uniform and seems rather to be painted "a la mode". The Hussars of the Royal Guard of Naples had a rather similar uniform ...

You are welcome! I really enjoy his detailed works! And when I looked at the French hussars in question they really looked familiar but something was off… The white dolman and the golden lace really look like the Neapolitan troops under Murat but I think they were deployed in Germany rather than in Spain. In fact Osprey says that of the Neapolitan cavalry troops in Spain the 2nd Chasseurs a cheval were there which have rather different uniform.

Here’s the hussar of the Royal Guard, the difference in the details is significant and I doubt this regiment saw action in Spain. But I guess that would be the closest real life equivalent to these French hussars.
