watched the second one first

I’ve never spent so much time on any royai art before, and I’m really happy with the outcome! Tisiphon might have recognized the scenes, since they’re all from the wonderful fanfic she wrote FOR ME almost two years ago! Ever since then I’ve been wanting to honour it with fanart and I’ve never got around to doing it. Until now! I hope you like them, Tisi, there’s one drawing for every section in your story, and they all express moments of intimacy I really appreciate in fiction ´-` with that fanfic you literally fulfilled my fanwork wishes and I am so, so grateful for that <3

Peter: it’s been a year
Me: yeah, okay

random phone screencaps of Lin in Do No Harm because I love this character a lot and he deserved so much better

Kara and Mon-El fight in pretty much every episode. She creates a list of reasons why they’re not good for each other, and it’s growing. She tells Mon-El to keep what happened between them private because of how new it is, which is completely reasonable, and then ignores her wishes ten seconds later and tells everyone. He did that more than once throughout this episode.

Kara gets angry at im in every episode, and those reasons are pretty legit, only for those reasons to be completely resolved at the end of the episode. I’m having so much difficulty understanding how the writers are doing this so WRONG. They insist he’s a good guy while making him do really shitty things in every single episode, only for him to get away with doing those things every time.

And Kara and Mon-El slept together in the episode immediately after getting together, but somehow couldn’t manage more than two kisses for Kara and James in an entire season. Kara and Mon-El were far more physical with each other in this one episode than Alex and Maggie has been since they got together. I’m pretty sure Winn’s girlfriend had more lines than Maggie. I was actually really surprised she was there at the end of the episode.

He was injected into almost every scene, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he pulled in more screen time than Alex in an episode about the Danvers family reuniting. They were so desperate to make Mon-El the hero in this.

And where the hell is James? Yeah, blah blah blah, I know some people are happy about his disappearance. I don’t care. It makes zero sense that he has been gone for two episodes with absolutely no explanation.

I know I’m ranting here, but this makes no sense. It’s like the show completely changed it’s course after the first season. It’s like all of the stuff they were against doing in the first then became fair game in the second.

I know that the Karamel fandom is really small, but I just don’t understand how anyone ships them. Kara finds a problem with him in every single episode, points it out, and then gets over it at the end. Mon-El almost blatantly ignores her wishes at every turn but as long as he apologizes, or even merely acknowledges it at the end, it’s all good.

How is this cute? How is this attractive? How is this at all empowering to a female audience? How is revolving Kara’s entire season 2 story line around her love interest positive character development? What in the hell happened to this show’s writers?

Because I mistakenly thought that a female lead superhero show wouldn’t work almost exactly like a male lead one. That this one would put out a positive message to women. So far, all it’s shown anyone is that no matter how many doubts you have about someone, as long as they look REALLY sincere in their apology, then just let it go. Kara calls him out on so much of his shit, but it never means anything because she forgets about it later.

I just…I’m so stunned by the depth that the writers have fallen this season. It’s like I’m watching two different shows, and the second show is continously slapping the first one in the face.

And worst of all, that last scene really should have been Kara and Alex. That’s the relationship that has been hit the hardest by this Karamal nonsense. Every single week a new episode airs, and I look forward to the the next one even less…

… Am I the only one who keeps watching the first few seconds of this video when Niall said “fuck” in THAT voice?! I mean, he’s adorable throughout most of the video but those first few seconds… damn it.

i know everyone just heard ‘adam birkholtz has sisters’ and ran with the little sister headcanons and i love them all but also what if adam birkholtz was the baby of the family???? hmmm???

(thanks @kantperson and @tictacbergerac for letting me rant abt this on twitter)

LEAH, age 32, surgical resident

  • bc she’s so much older than holster she’s like a really weird sister/aunt/mom hybrid and adam LOVES HER.
    • simultaneously So Cool and A Giant Nerd
    • saw holster’s snaps of getting high watching the golden girls and was like “ADAM >:(”
  • their parents are real :/// because leah never really dated and she ~should be thinking of settling down~ and then the other birkholtz children will be like: “hey ur kid is literally a brain surgeon could u maybe not??”
    • (leah is gay? maybe? but she’s focusing on her career and can’t really be fucked abt it tbh)
  • (leah’s siblings watch A LOT of grey’s anatomy. they call her mcdreamy and she HATES it and they will NEVER KNOW that christina yang made her decide to go to med school)
  • leah hears adam’s stories about ‘his bro ransom’ and just kind of sideeyes her phone.
    • “adam. adam honey. that’s gay”
    • “YOU’RE GAY”
    • “uh.”
    • “my friend shitty says i gotta let u come out at your own pace but is there somethin u wanna tell me?”

DELIA, age 29, resident nurse

  • she and leah are best fucking friends ever
    • (delia is the only one who knows abt leah’s monster crush on christina yang and she knows this bc they watched her last episode together and cried)
    • they work at the same hospital. the patients love them but they get REALLY CONFUSED bc someone will tell them “dr. birkholtz” is gonna treat them and they’ll be like “wait u mean delia? she was just in here she brought me this afghan?”
  • delia crochets like a motherfucking boss. she makes sweaters appear the way bitty cranks out pies. eric bittle, from GEORGIA, thanks god every day for delia’s blankets that are just everywhere in the haus
    • holster just casually gives people his scarf/hat and will be like “keep it dude. i have five more at home and i’m expecting a care package next month”
  • delia has been dating the same guy since high school and they’re engaged. holster gave this dude the shovel speech ten years ago. he still had fucking braces and delia can’t wait for leah to tell the story at the wedding.
  • holster and delia aren’t actually that close but they have an unspoken ‘i would absolutely die for you’ bond.
    • when holster’s home, they watch bad sitcoms together. specifically, ones cancelled in their first or second seasons. they compare notes re: whether or not they deserved to be canceled and how they might have been saved

MURIEL, age 26, personal trainer and professional hockey

  • muriel and holster are tight. it’s 50% a being-the-closest-in-age thing and 50% a diehard bond of hockey love.
  • the family joke is that it’s a good thing holster’s a boy bc obviously their parents were scraping the bottom of the barrel of girls’ names
    • (insert trans holster hc here)
  • muriel took ice skating lessons from ages 4-6, and when holster turned 4 and started learning baby hockey basics, muriel defected
    • muriel is a goalie. muriel is six feet tall and 190 pounds. muriel could end your life and you would thank her.
  • she left for college the same year holster left home to play in juniors. it was fucking awful and she transferred her sophomore year to be closer to his billet family.
  • she may or may not be a Jack Zimmermann Puck Bunny tm
    • (when holster told her abt samwell, she was like !!!!!!!. holster was NOT HAPPY.)
    • she helped him move into the haus and met jack for the first time and her entire brain stopped working.
    • literally she was carrying a giant tub of holster’s whey protein and she just. stood there staring at jack. like a NERD.
    • holster and shitty were there. a smh tradition was born.
    • her teammates call her murray because they love her
    • shitty has season tickets. he skypes holster from every single game. they cry a lot.
  • after she won the isobel cup she brought it down to samwell and was like ‘,:) are u intimidated gentlemen?
    • (she immediately became a fucking nerd again bc jack was there and asked for her autograph)
    • “ADAM STFU”
    • “PLSEAS??? I’LL SHAVE!!!!!”
    • “ADAM I H9 U”

ADAM, age 24, econ student

  • has really fucking awesome sisters
  • is the undisputed spoiled brat baby of the family

King Kong (1933), dir.  Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack ★★★★½

Some things I noticed after watching Rogue One a second time . . .

When I first watched Rogue One, I was just trying to stay with the plot and falling in love with the characters, so I didn’t go too deep with studying the actual filmmaking that went into it.

I’m a huge film nerd - went to film school, actually - so this time around, I consciously looked at the film through that lens.

Maybe someone else has already noticed this, but here goes:

I was really struck by the Director of Photography’s lighting choices in the scene where the rebellion is basically “recruiting” Jyn.

Lighting is such a cool thing - often used in classic movies to show the moral standing of characters.

Here’s a breakdown of how each major player in the scene is lit and what we can infer:

Mon Mothma - brightly, fully lit (she almost looks angelic); she is clearly the person with the most strict moral code and the most “spotless moral conduct” (reading the novelisation, this really comes through)

Jyn Erso - softly lit with no hard shadows, but clearly dimmer than Mon Mothma; she has a shady criminal past, but she’s got good intentions

General Dodonna and Bail Organa - lit similarly to Jyn; they have good intentions, even if they might be a bit more comfortable with the moral grey areas than Mon Mothma

General Draven - there is a bit of bright lighting on the top of his head, but his face generally stays in shadow; he has fully accepted the “morally questionable” acts he orders others to commit to serve the greater vision of the Rebellion

And now my favourite …

Cassian Andor - his face is half in shadow and half in light (very similar to the way Michael Corleone is lit in The Godfather); it represents how he wrestles with doing things he hates (assassinations, etc) to serve the cause he believes in, because he finds them morally reprehensible - Cassian is, to borrow a phrase from Doctor Who, “halfway out of the dark”

Anyway, I though it was pretty cool. I noticed some other thematic stuff that I might post about later.

Feel free to talk to me about this - I’m a total nerd about it and I love meeting other people who are nerdy about it, too.

Also, I’m total trash for rebelcaptain. If you are, too, we should be friends.

Ok, so since I’m writing a fic, I’m rewatching RWBY(oh the good old volumes, the good old volumes how I miss you so) and it came to me that the reason I kind of feel bad about v4 is that…it felt as if writers pushed some plots and characters on us like they….didn’t really know what to write. I understand that, writing is not easy. However I feel like v4 really was wasted potential and that writers sort of walked past a quite good path they could have taken. I’m talking about Ruby. There is a story about her that has been sitting there pretty much forever. And it would be-imo at least- a path consistent with what has been set up about her as character from the start(and not only character traits)

-Large part of Ruby’s character, aside from cheerfulness and optimism is her idealism. She went to Beacon and wanted to become a Huntress because she wanted to be a hero. And not the kind of hero that gets glory and whatnot. She wanted to SAVE AND HELP PEOPLE.

-She values her friends a lot, because she’s socially awkward and she doesn’t/didn’t have that many of them from what we understand. Sure she had some friends at Signal but Yang has hinted more than once that Ruby needs to meet more people, and come out of her shell.

-Her semblance is speed

Now, you may ask ‘But Nina, what do those three things have to do with one another, and what do they have to do with volume 4?’

Well here it is. And that’s guilt over what happened. Just look at the end pf previous season. Beacon fell, Pyrrha died, Penny died. Two of her friends-people she cares about, people she’s been short of in her life-die and THEY DIE RIGHT BEFORE HER EYES. She, the girl who wanted to be a hero, girl with superpower of SPEED both times arrives LATE TO SAVE PEOPLE SHE LOVES. This would be something she’d feel terrible about, and we had hints through volume 4, scattered here and there that she indeed has guilt over what happened. And that would’ve been a great story. Because it would be natural and in line with what has been set up about her; for her to think

“I wanted to save people, but when the time came for it, I could not. Two of my close friends…my BEST FRIEND have been killed in front of my eyes. I’m a speedster, I’m fast and yet despite of this I still arrived to late’ She would think that, she would not understand how it’s possible and she would feel horribly, horribly guilty over it, and lose some confidence over it too. Question whenever or not she still has it in her to be a Huntress. And Silver-eyes? It would fit with it pretty well too. Because she’s been told she has some even more special superpower, something really grand.

‘I’m so special, I have this power…why did it not manifest itself earlier? Why could I not use it to save Penny? Why did it activate too late to save Pyrrha?’ She could get to question her calling even more. Because she has a great power, that once again…came too late to save people she cared about…

This would have been a plot that followed right after the third season, and explored Ruby’s feelings. and heck, we could throw in a bit of danger into it too. I’ve stated before that it would be good of Silver-eyed power, like any destructive and dangerous power like this had some consequences. So what if Ruby’s guilt and negative feelings fuelled it and made her loose control? Caused the power to turn on her? Especially as Ruby, is a person who runs away from negative feelings rather than face them. She prefers to push them away and cover them with constant happiness, and excitement. This could be a good conflict too. She would push her guilt away, she would try and act cheerful for the sake of RNJR and everyone else, but it would become more and more difficult to hide her feelings with her powers acting up, with the headaches and nightmares. She would finally HAVE to face the way she feels, face her doubts and face her guilt. For once, she would have to admit that she’s not always happy-go-lucky ball of energy.

And that could be a good thing for the rest of the team. Ren, Nora and Jaune, would suddenly realise that their energetic and optimistic friend needs support, and not only ‘we’re going to help you find answers’ support. But actual, emotional support, that for once she needs someone to talk to HER the way she talked, and cheered on, and supported other people. That could go especially for Jaune, with whom she is very close and whom she gave the advice on leadership. Sort of have him give back to her for all her kindness. I know, I know we got that in Kuroyuri, but it was just one scene, and the rest of the volume, and thrown a bit at the end…with rest of the volume not really focusing on this aspect that much.

This story has been there, I’ve seen some hints, a one or two scenes, but I think that it should have had more focus and depth.
