I’m at Diamond City for the first time and after talking to Piper, Dogmeat runs off. I follow him only to find him sniffing at a Diamond City guard that looks oddly familiar (Fucking Deacon). Now it’s spawned a headcanon that, while Deacon was watching the entrance to Vault 111 (There’s a railroad watch post on the ledge to the left as you come out) Dogmeat came and said hello. So now, weeks later at Diamond city, it’s just like;
Deacon: *whispering* “Yes, yes. Hello again”
“Yes, it’s nice to see you too.”
“Come on, man! You gotta-*Sole appears. Deacon pretends to act cool by lighting a cigarette* Hey. What’s up?”
me, a guy who is literally carrying a fallout poster at that very moment and has a nuka cola lanyard on him, who owns a vault boy pop figurine, a vault 111 pocket watch and a vault suit track jacket and has been obsessing over mass effect for a week and who has spent every moment of his waking hours thinking about his Shepard OCs:
*sees a guy on the bus wearing a mass effect jacket and a fallout scarf*
There really should be a DLC that gives us some additional relationship content for Deacon. But instead of you trying to flirt and romance him, Deacon is the one who tries to romance you. You have to choose whether or not to accept his advances.
He’s the one who watched over the vault. He’s the one who followed you as you trekked through the Commonwealth, most likely keeping some of its many dangers from killing you. He doesn’t trust anyone, but he slowly begins to trust you. If you tried to pursue a relationship with him, he’s only going to decline. Doesn’t matter how he feels about you because he views himself as scum. He already feels unworthy of your friendship.
But during some point in your travels together, Deacon realizes he’s fallen in love with you. He tells you he needs to travel on his own for a while. You think you did something wrong. A few in-game days past and he finds you again, and he has something very important to talk to you about. He’s finally gathered up enough courage to be vulnerable with you, to be truthful with you. He hasn’t felt this way toward anyone since his wife died… and once he’s done with his heartfelt confession, you’ve got to make the choice to either remain friends or say you love him, too.
And though there’s some stuff I don’t think is viable I do think the OP is onto something.
I think Deacon was going to be from the pre-war, I think he was gonna be Rosa’s boy like the OP said. But Bethesda decided to cut it. Either for time or something else.
I mean it is weird there’s so many terminal references to Rose and her nameless son. And we know Deacon knew about you and was watching vault 111 for some time. How did he know about the vault and why would he care if there was someone on ice in there? Like why was this important to him? We never find out, and I guess Bethesda didn’t have time to remove his original backstory from the game completely so the things left over come off as weird plotholes.
We have terminal entries in the RailRoad HQ trying to explain his motivations, but it feels like a quick edit to me.
Then we have the thing that made me really consider what OP was saying. Codsworth makes that random comment about seeing ‘Mrs Rosa’s boy running around in his Halloween costume’ With no context it’s just the robot being unhinged, but what if it was going to originally be foreshadowing for Deacon?
Like, we all agree it’s random as fuck that Deacon is unromanceable right? With Nick, Strong and the other robots you can kinda understand why Bethesda assumed (wrongly) no-one would want to bang them.
But why not Deacon?
It’s not cus he had a dead wife considering we can romance McCready.
So if Bethesda was like ‘no-ones gonna want to fuck the robot’ it’s not that hard to believe they would also think ‘no-ones gonna want to fuck the man you once knew as that brat who lived on your street pre-war’ even if he is now probably older then you.
This theory explains so much about Deacon’s character. Like why he takes a risk by vouching for you when you join the railroad, and why he knows so much about re-war culture. Hell even him being a pretty bad guy in the past makes sense. A ten or so year old from pre-war America being dropped in the wasteland? Yeah kid probably got fucked up.
And before people bring up the ‘how the fuck is Deacon still so young?’ thing.
I have another theory.
Kellogg being over 100 years old due to being a cyborg always felt
really weird to me. So I theorize the gap between Shaun
being kidnapped and you getting out was originally going to be smaller. Like
instead of 60 it was gonna be 30-40 years.
I assume child Deacon was going to be frozen in the Vault as well, but released when Kellogg deactivated the pods the first time. Again since I feel this was a scrapped backstory for Deacon I’m not sure what the original idea was going to be (since it’s clear when that happens in the finished game everyone but you and your spouse dies) but this makes the most sense to me.
In terms of writing this also makes Deacon a rather interesting Foil for Father. A child from the pre-war who remembers that life and had to survive the post-war hell vs a child who didn’t and was raised in comfort away from the outside world.
