Biphobia in Fandom

I’m here with another fandom PSA, specifically to address the rampant biphobia going around right now, especially in regards to attacking ships like Kallura and Shallura for being “straight”. I’ve already written something like this on my personal blog, but for here, it’s a little less, erm, “strongly worded” I guess. I was pretty angry when I wrote the first one. And, I’ll be honest, that anger has not subsided.

Long and short of it, arguing that M/F ships in this fandom is heteronormative is not fighting against heteronormativity, it is reinforcing it.

Heteronormativity assumes that straight is the norm and everything else is a deviance. Ultimately, it reduces people’s sexualities (which go far deeper than relationships btw) to the assumed gender of their partner and what they do with their partner behind closed doors. It also goes hand-in-hand with biphobia.

Attacking m/f ships just because they look straight is textbook biphobia. And pan/ace/poly/trans-phobia. When I mention bisexuality from here on out, I am including them, too.

I am a bisexual woman married to a man. That marriage does not magically wash away the biphobic bullshit I still have to endure from both straight people and my own community. 16 years of my life was spent living in a Southern state with all its extremely religious and homophobic trappings that we hear so much about so trust me I know. And lemme tell you, straight people do not consider us one of them, they consider us gay and just as damned for hell. I’ve heard it and lived it again and again for 16 years and long after, and only in the recent years have just now started peeling away my internalized biphobia embedded in me and fighting back.

I need everyone to watch this video. Notice that the moment the main character learns her date is bisexual. It destroys the otherwise romantic mood of a third date. Not a first date. A third. A guy she supposedly likes enough to date him multiple times. And then later, all she and her friends focus on is the fact that he is once dated a guy and that she needs to leave him.

This line here: “…but in the end they all ended up with men.” And “So did the bisexual women.”

I’m not going to go into whether this is commentary for biphobia or if this actual biphobia framed as comedy because I’ve never watched this show at all, but the point I’m trying to make is that this is our life. This is what our identity is reduced to. This is what straight people think of us. This is heteronormativity, that this guy is strange and abnormal and not worthy of dating her because he is not straight, he is bi and therefore “ew” he also likes guys. If the main character were to stand up to her friends, tell them that she will continue to date this guy because she likes him (and not just because he’s a good kisser, because that’s also pretty gross and fetishizing) - that is not heteronormative and actually fights for bisexual representation.

When we go to fandom for escape, to explore our sexuality, to tell our stories, we are met with the same “You can’t ship m/f because that makes it straight!” Trust me. We know what that is really being said here. It’s the same biphobic lenses straight people use, just a different frame. “You can’t ship m/f because it looks straight therefore it isn’t valid!”

It goes the other way, too. I very recently had to block someone who was using my Allurance art to showcase Lance’s “straightness”. DO NOT DO THIS. I headcanon Lance as bisexual with a different gender preference just like I am. In my fics and headcanons, he has been given a lot of nuances that reflect my own upbringing and experiences. Even when I ship him with Allura, he is still bisexual. Being shipped with a different gender does not change that. So seeing my art with that context on a blog steeped in biphobia was one of the most insulting things that has ever happened to me in fandom.

Bisexuality is an identity. I was bisexual before I was married, and I’m still bisexual even during the fact. That will never change, no matter who I am with at the time. I am a bisexual woman married to a man and I. Am. Still. Valid. And if you can’t accept that, if you can’t support bisexuals in different gender relationships because they look straight, then you are not an ally.  I’m not saying this to be “mean” or paint you as some kind of awful person. Not at all. You are just simply not an ally. Being an ally doesn’t mean you get to pick and choose what makes you personally comfortable to support. You either support it all or none of it. Point blank. That’s how it is.

Do you want to fight against heteronormativity?

Normalizing non-straight different gender relationships in healthy ways is how you fight against heteronormativity.

Not by attacking shippers for their ships that look straight, especially shippers who do identify as LGBTAQ+ and have their m/f ships reflect their experiences.

Thank you for your time.

lol @ some blogs treating this drama like some kinda of scientific object and analyzing every single possible detail of it like it’s some kind of equation!

if you find it stupid why do you watch it .. why do you have to post about it.. If you are that smart why do you waste your precious time on it?

this why I don’t watch anything with mom you know.. she’d point out to every damn little detail and ruin the whole thing for me..

not to be dramatic but if the halcyon doesn’t get another series i’m gonna jump on a plane down to itv’s headquarters and kick someone’s ass. i have already suffered through the extremely unjust cancellation of home fires. at the time, i swore i’d never watch another itv drama again but when i heard about this show i decided to get invested. against my better judgement, i gave itv another chance not to let me down again and if they behave like money-grabbing assholes who value shitty reality shows and fucking piers morgan’s fucking stupid interview series over good dramas centring on women, queer people and people of colour i will be down at itv studios fucking committing murder

Oh my god I was so excited to see when Seán would upload his version of this video! xD I watched Mark’s version of this video already but it was still so much fun to watch this again too. With all the drama that’s going on right now it’s nice to see and hear Seán, Mark, Bob and Wade laugh and just have some fun together. :)

anonymous asked:

I've been meaning to ask you, since I noticed this is your first time reviewing a kdrama, hope I am not wrong, how did you decide to watch goblin and especially what made you start writing a review for it? I only started watching it after someone made me, but in my defense I was waay on board after ep two. Ps. Pray tell what was your first experience with kdramaland. Pps.Thanks and really apreciate what you are doing here ^.^

Lol, you’re totally right dear Anon and thank you ^^ I’m proud to say that Goblin is my FIRST drama that I’ve reviewed… it’s actually THE drama that brought me back to life and revitalized my love for kdramas.

I’m the kdrama person who has “phases” of watching kdramas non-stop and then literally going MIA for years until something piques my interest again. I do have to say that I did watch some dramas once in awhile… but that was it… I didn’t have any interest in discussing the drama nor writing about it. However, Goblin is the FIRST drama that made me want to review because the story was so captivating, deep, and refreshing. Also, I was very frustrated at how our lovely Eun-Tak was getting loads of UNREASONABLE HATE… and I NEEDED TO DEFEND HER! #EuntakProtectionSquad4Life … And like I’ve mentioned, I LIVE FOR SYMBOLISMS IN LITERATURE/MOVIES/FILMS/ETC and Goblin is jam packed with them!!!

I decided to watch Goblin mainly because 1) Gong Yoo was acting in it (if you haven’t noticed, I LOVE GONG YOO!) and 2) my roommate actually is the person who made me watch kdramas again in 2016 – so thanks to my roommate for introducing me to DotS, W, and Scarlet Heart Ryeo… lol… we would literally binge watch these dramas together all night, even on class nights. >_<

Haha, surprisingly this is my FIRST experience with kdramaland, despite I’ve watched my fair share of kdramas (including Coffee Prince)… Goblin became my life. I’ve never really felt the need to be “active” in kdramaland… kdrama fandom.. whatever you call it, lol. Not until Goblin came along and it just lit this fire in my soul… and my fingers were just itching to write about my thoughts on Goblin. This was the first time that I felt this overwhelming excitement and need to write about my thoughts and I always got all giggly over getting likes/reblogs/comments on my reviews/posts… BUT THINGS BEGAN TO GET MORE CRAZY WHEN PEOPLE ACTUALLY STARTED FOLLOWING ME BECAUSE OF GOBLIN :O And then it just became apart of my life… I literally set aside time on Fridays-Sundays to write my reviews… answer peoples’ questions… and fangirl. It became so much fun and I enjoyed it so much… to the point my family and friends called me crazy, lol. I literally blocked my availability on the weekends after 7 PM because that’s when the new Goblin episodes came out on DramaFever… I even left a friend hang early because it coincided with Goblin, lmfao. xD

I think there’s no such thing as a ‘perfect timing’ for anyone to become interested or love something… and that goes along the same morals of Goblin which I totally fell in love with. It’s never too late to watch Goblin either, so don’t feel bad at all even though the “hype” for Goblin is over since it’s already aired – but don’t let that stop you from watching it… and I’ll always be here to talk about Goblin :D cause I CAN’T FORGET MY ROOTS! I was very affected with the ending of Goblin aka. Goblin Withdrawal Syndrome… that I almost wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue on reviewing other dramas T.T

This blog exists because of Goblin and this blog will continue to breathe and live for Goblin until the day it dies.

Once Goblin trash… forever and always Goblin trash ☆⌒(≧▽° )

  • friend: is everything okay?
  • what she says: I'm fine
  • what she means: Nothing's okay. Wuntch, circling me like a shark frenzied by chum. The task force, turning into a career-threatening quagmire. An internal affairs investigation casting doubt upon my integrity. And you ask "is everything okay?". I am buffeted by the winds of my foe's enmity and cast about by the towering waves of cruel fate. Yet I, a captain, am no longer able to command my vessel, my precinct, from my customary helm, my office. And you ask "is everything okay?". I've worked the better part of my years on earth overcoming every prejudice and fighting for the position I hold and now I feel it being ripped from my grasp, and with it, the very essence of what defines my as a man. And you ask "is everything okay?".

!Even more random twin headcanons, because apparently that’s all I can think about in the last days:

  • hot chocolate is Luke’s comfort drink

  • Lando introduced him to it

  • whenever Luke feels that Leia is stressed, he makes her some, and it always helps

  • once, when Luke was away on an emergency, Leia tried to make herself some hot chocolate. It tasted wrong, and she never did it again

  • Leia likes trashy holo dramas

  • she makes Luke watch them with her, and he is soon hooked, too

  • Han pretends to hate them, but he actually thinks they’re really funny

  • Leia sometimes trains with the Rogues. She is an amazing pilot, and could easily fly with them, but as a symbol of the Rebellion and a member of High Command, the risk is deemed to high. Sometimes, she can convince people to let her fly, though, and has flown at least a few combat missions with the Rogues

  • the Rogues consider her a member of their squadron

  • once when they were drunk they went and got T-shirts made that have “Member of the Rogue Squadron” written on them in black in front of a white Alliance symbol

  • Leia wears hers proudly even years later, even though some stuffy politicans give her weird looks when they see it

  • the lady in charge of the mess hall of most of the bases the Rogues are stationed on is a middle-aged woman from Tatooine called Amee

  • Luke is her favorite, and they often converse in the language of their people

  • they never let others listen, though, because their language is a secret that’s not meant to be shared with free people

  • Luke calls her Ajuna, which is the typical adress of a woman of her age for any child of the desert, and means grandmother

  • for a long time, the Rogues assume that Ajuna is her name

  • the Rogues always throw the twins a birthday party together

  • there’s more than one joke about them being secretly twins long before anyone learns the truth

  • Luke always needs extra blankets, because this boy is from the desert and used to a much hotter climate

  • Leia can’t sew to save her life

  • Luke can

  • Leia contemplated suicide a few times directly after the destruction of Alderaan

  • Luke is very anti-slavery, given his background as a freeborn son of slave. This causes him to react rather extreme to some situations, like when their new ally insists that his servant girls in their scimpy dresses love to dress that way, and no, that’s not slave trackers, what makes you think that?

  • Leia is usually very quick to join Luke in his outrage

  • they like to watch action movies and take apart the flaws and parts that are physically impossible

  • Leia can take amazing, very artsy holos. She never shows them to people outside of her family, but she is very talented
