Tony Stark resigned his commission in Starfleet five years ago, after a disastrous away mission, and he swore he’d never go back. He just wants to be left alone to build warp engines in peace. But the universe has more in store for him than that, as he discovers when Admiral Fury comes to him with an offer he could never have expected and cannot possibly refuse: first officer and chief engineer aboard the all-new USS Avenger, a starship of Tony’s own design. What’s more, the Avenger’s captain is Steve Rogers, hero of the Earth-Romulan War. Believed dead for over a century, Steve is miraculously alive… and very, very attractive.
But nothing is ever easy for Tony. As he wrestles with his secret desire for his new captain and his not-so-dormant fears, another mission starts to go wrong, and Tony becomes aware that Steve has secrets of his own – and the truth could change everything.
This is my story for the 2016 Cap/Iron Man Big Bang. It’s a Marvel 616 fusion with Star Trek (TOS), set shortly after the events of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
The Vulcans have landed, and are greeting Cochrane. Cochrane holds his hand out to Solkar, who is confused for a second, but he lowers his hand and moves forward. However, instead of a handshake, Cochrane reaches up and grabs one of Solkar’s ears and starts feeling them. Solkar is stunned but roles with it anyway, think it a weird greeting.
“Captain Solkar’s Log,
We have made first contact with the Terran species called, Humans, who we observed lightly over the years. It was, an experience. The creator of their Warp Engine greeted us by feeling our ears and making cooing noises. They also had a tendency to pet our hair as well. Two of the Humans we met, a Mr. Data and a Mr. Laforge, decided to scratch Sub-Commander Tolok behind his ears, which caused the Sub-Commander to involuntarily purr. The Humans heard the purr and started crying calling him ‘adorable’ and ‘just like a Kitten’ and proceeded to attempt to illicit more purring. The Sub-Commander has sought refuge by cramming himself into a small crawl space in one of the engineering deck, and refuses to come out until we have reached Vulcan. I predict that this will be, an interesting relationship. Further, on an entirely different note, I am currently filing my retirement forms, I am too old for this and there is not enough chocolate.
an x-team full of characters who were engineered or warped into weapons and monsters but strive desperately to be more than that, to choose their own path, to be whole and real
maddie, rachel, laura, illyana.
rachel is the furthest along in her journey, and also the one with the most team experience; she starts off as a brash, reckless field leader but slowly comes into her own, as her father assured her she would. the more confidence she has in herself as a hero, the easier leading comes to her, and the rest of them pick up on that.
maddie is still reeling. she knows, objectively, that the demons tainted her soul, twisted her desperation to their own ends. it doesn’t help much when she can remember every detail, when she can still destroy with a snap of her fingers. it’s scott and nathan who advocate for her most of all; scott shows her she can forge her own future, find her own identity, as nathan helps her control her power.
eventually, maddie and rachel make one hell of a tag team. sometimes, they talk about jean.
it’s been a long time since illyana felt secure on a team, like she was there out of belonging rather than need or circumstance. she hesitates to accept the offer. but kitty adores rachel, and illyana can see something of dani in her fledgling leadership, and she’ll never say it but she’s been lonely for so damn long. as time goes on, she relaxes, and remembers, and revels.
the darkchylde is still a part of her, but she begins to let go of her shame and use the monstrous part of her for good, because it’s not about what you are, it’s about what you choose.
laura has belonged before, but it never lasts for long. she approaches this new opportunity cautiously, sceptically. but none of them judge or dismiss her for it; instead of telling her she’s part of this ragtag kinship, they show her. they aren’t horrified or intimidated by her past, because there is blood on their hands too.
she’s the most accomplished in pure combat, and her team mates learn a hell of a lot sparring with her.
most of their missions are more about saving people than fighting them. sometimes, they need to kill to do this, but it’s never a first resort, and it doesn’t define the nature of their mission.
eventually, this brings them to face sinister, and maddie is almost overwhelmed until she remembers she doesn’t have to fight alone.
OKay, so, NASA has been working on a thing recently. They call it an EM, or Electro Magnetic drive, which, to dumb it down a lot, is basically using an advanced microwave oven for thrust. There were concerns that the thing couldn’t work in vacuum, but recent tests have shown otherwise.
Here’s where things get weird. Part of the experiment involved firing lasers into the drive’s resonant chambers. Some of the lasers, they, uh….
The lasers moved faster than light speed.
NASA may have made a warp engine, and done it by accident.
