Three years after the fall of SHIELD, HYDRA flourished in the ashed ruins of the once powerful world clandestine organization. Many of SHIELD’s top agents had either deferred to the “dark side”, reported missing, or were eliminated for resisting. SHIELD’s presence was in utter decay around the world and most believed that the agents had been hunted like sport and all but gone extinct, choking on their honor as they writhed in agony in the name of their foolish loyalty and pride. Their surrender was inevitable. Ward knew that better than any one. His team would hunt SHIELD agents until darkness reigned over the world. And sitting upon that throne was Daniel Whitehall - the crazed, megalomaniac who was obsessed with immortality and had a penchant of warping HYDRA’s soldiers into soulless, obedient puppets. Ward knew it was only a matter of time before he would be all too “happy to comply”, and decided it was time to get out. And the opportunity presented itself in a seemingly simple assignment by the head of HYDRA himself: the transportation of a gift from the Kree empire to HYDRA’s headquarters.
Ward had it all planned out: he would make sure that the job goes sideways and in the flaming wreckage, disappear from the face of the earth, never to be seen again.
Only before he could do that, he
discovers that the chamber with the “gift” housed none other than his former teammate, Jemma Simmons. A newly transformed, Inhuman Jemma Simmons.
In a strange turn of events, Ward becomes wrapped up in helping Simmons escape the pod and is forced to bring her to the only place she believes could keep her safe: SHIELD.
To say that this mission would be dangerous on both fronts would be the understatement of the century… but Ward was never one to back down from a challenge.
I’ve always loved this teeny tiny moment with Fitz moving away from Jemma as soon as Ward arrives on the scene. I’m not sure if it was the director or a choice that Iain made or if it was even intentional, but I feel like it has a lot of meaning? Especially in the context of the rest of the ep. Several times during this episode, Ward tries to take credit for Fitzsimmons’ growth, both as a couple and individuals, over the last few seasons. He gives himself a nice pat on the back when he initially confronts Simmons in the torture chamber ( “I’d like to think dropping you and Fitz 20,000 leagues under the sea really got the ball rolling [on her ‘Furiosa’ attitude].” ), implies that because of him, Fitz “finally” has the chance to prove his love to Jemma ( “I always thought Fitz would give up the world for you. Now he finally has his chance.” ), and throws in that I-told-you-so moment as well ( “I even told you to make a move before it was too late.” ). In classic Ward fashion, he takes the situation/their relationship and tries to make it about himself. This little defiant moment is Fitz’s way of keeping the intimate conversation he and Simmons just had between the two of them without Ward coming in and hijacking it. Ward has no right to know that he has in fact already made a move. Fitz doesn’t have anything to prove to Ward where their relationship is concerned.

The scene that meets her freezes her just as fast, because the woman who obviously just spoke, the one with a hand slapped over her eyes and her face twisted in utter revulsion—it’s her.
Well, obviously it’s not, but it certainly looks like her: another Jemma, nearly identical to her save that she’s dressed in tac gear and, to Jemma’s own eye, rather underweight.
And next to the other Jemma is another Grant—also dressed in tac gear, in perfect shape, and, in counterpoint to Jemma’s double, looking perfectly pleased with the situation.
…Despite, she might add, the fact that the Grant next to her has a gun leveled at him.
