war.....what is it good for

I Saw Wonder Woman And I am Happy

How long? How long did we wait for this? For me, it was decades.

Did you know I had my doubts it would get made? And I my misgivings? And my worries? That I was very concerned with the actress they cast? That I was very, very concerned after first director left. And how white that cast looked. * Oh, and how very disappointing both B v S and Suicide Squad were.

But finally the Wonder Woman movie is here. And for me, it was glorious. I hope it is for you too.

Patty Jenkins has delivered one of the best superhero movies ever. Gal Gadot was just the right balance of fish out of water and kick ass.

There were tears from both me and my daughter at the end of our viewing last night. I am going back to see it again tomorrow.

So go. Go see a female superhero on the big screen. Go see a movie where a woman can be heroic and human (even if she not quite). Go get shivers as Wonder Woman makes her debut on the field of war. And go and see what a good DC film looks like.

And let me know what you think.

* I would still trade out Antiope for Phillipus.

Hey correct me if I'm wrong bc it's been literal years since reading the PJO books, but didn't Grover fall asleep for like a year before the titan war? And if so, then WHY did no-one write a fic about him and Percy bonding over losing an entire year of their lives? AND their mental bond? And what is Grover even doing these days as Lord of the Wild? I just need more Grover in my life tbh.

he did! everyone was wondering where he was and he was asleep in a tree

………..what a good question

  • as soon as the titan war is over and percy and annabeth have sorted their feelings out, grover and percy sit out in the strawberry fields and grover makes percy tell him everything
    • “grover you really don’t need to know how many hours of video games i played”
      “yes i do”
  • they find that grover is still garbage at panflute, without the monsters percy’s life is relatively boring, and that they really don’t just sit and talk enough
  • grover also does a serious interrogation about sally and paul
  • it ends with percy bringing grover back to see sally and she hugs him hard and then proceeds to try to feed him like two dozen batches of cookies
  • grover offers to sever the mental bond a few more times but every time he does, percy pretends not to hear
  • they get a lot better at controlling it because percy still stays away from as much technology as possible
    • sometimes percy will send weird and random thoughts to grover in the middle of class and grover is just like “dude wtf pay attention”
    • percy once tried to use it to cheat on a test and was like “hey grover ask annabeth something” and annabeth showed up at the apartment to yell at percy and then offer studying tips/advice and a study buddy if he ever needed one
    • things get like super weird when it’s two am and neither of them can sleep and they just send back strange and sometimes deeply philosophical thoughts
      • they wake up the next morning like “all i remember is peanut butter and napoleon what happened”
    • after tartarus, grover checks in on percy all the time. to make sure he’s eating and sleeping and taking care of himself. and to ask if he’s ok, because percy doesn’t lie as well over the mental bond
  • grover has a lot of duties as lord of the wild that percy doesn’t always understand but he always listens to grover rant about
    • he’ll latch onto the little things he knows and make commentary on that and grover is like “thank you for understanding”
  • percy once asks grover if being lord of the wild makes him a god or what and grover just lays down on the ground for a little while because thinking about being considered a god stresses him out
    • percy lays down with him and starts talking about the new book his mom is working on
  • most of grover’s duties have to do with protecting animals and the environment, so percy helps him set up time with rachel so he can reach out to the mortal world as well
    • percy sits with them and tries to pay attention but sometimes he falls asleep and sometimes he doodles with whatever rachel hands him
  • it takes a while, but eventually percy knows a lot about what grover does!!! and he’s really proud of his best friend!!!
  • one time, grover is going on and on about this problem he’s having and struggling with, and percy offers up a really informed and good suggestion and grover just stares at him for a moment and was like “how did you remember that?”
    • percy shrugs and says “i pay attention?”
    • grover hugs him and almost starts crying and percy is so confused
Y'know what I love about AtlA?

What I love most about this show is that it isn’t like regular kid shows which gives us a good and bad side

In those “regular” kids shows, they’re the good guys, the others are the bad guys, not necessarily with a good reason
In those “regular” kids shows, war is portrayed as they are evil and we are good and we must defeat them cuz then they won’t be evil anymore

In AtlA, this isn’t the way they portray the war
Yes, the war is between the “evil” fire nation and the good other nations
BUT
in this show, there are bad sides about the good other nations, and good sides about the bad fire nation

Because when they get to ba sing se, in the “good” earth kingdom, they immediately figure out the corrupt ways of the dai li to keep the city in their control
They see the dai li teaming up with the enemy, they see betrayal

When they get to the fire nation, of course they’ll see the bad people eagerly supporting the fire lord, but they also see normal people living their daily lives while there’s an all out war going on

The fire nation wasn’t necessarily evil, it was the fire lord, and the people that followed him, that were the true poison of the nation

The earth kingdom wasn’t necessarily good either, because it was corrupted by a few tirants trying to control everything and everyone around them

This is what real war is
There isn’t just good and evil, there isn’t just black and white
It’s all just grey, and by making allies and enemies you try to see the real colors of certain people

Anyway I just love that this show taught me all this, that I never see black and white, I see shades of grey (no not fifty)

I just love this show and I’m definetly gonna have my kids watch the heck out of it

I was just thinking about the whole Humans Are Space Orcs thing (which has quickly become my favorite trope, maybe ever), and in jotting down some notes, i started thinking (this may have been done before, in that case sorry) but: what about our skin? Perception of texture? The many tiny, thin layers? We tend to think of our skin as delicate, but what if that wasn’t universally the case? (Warning, not very cute; involves “torture”)

The captured human was strong. Stronger than Glug had thought was possible. He had been proud to receive this job – get the human nice and lucid for the higher-ups – four earth days before, but now…
None of their native tortures seemed to do anything at all. Glug rubbed the rough, grating sides of pelts across its skin, and even (Glug was almost ashamed to admit to this particular cruelty) dragged sticks down its arms and legs. The human didn’t react at all beyond flashing its teeth (a war challenge? No, no, remember: a sign of mirth? Good Mavarseem, what a disgusting species) and laughing. It dared to laugh right in Glug’s face. He always snarled and rubbed more pelts on its exposed skin, but the human laughed and laughed. And worse, horrifyingly worse: the torture seemed to have no effect on the human physically. One of Glug’s own would have been a mewling, bloody mess after four day of pelts and (Glug shuddered) sticks. Exactly how thick was the human’s hide?
“Feels pretty good, keep it up, i’ve got an itch just there,” it would mock. It was just putting on a show, right? It couldn’t be that indestructible. All of this… couldn’t feel good.
Once, Glug got angry. Really furiously angry, and dragged the stick more forcefully that he ever had before, on anyone, and the human gasped a little.
“Ah, you got me that time! Good job, congrats!”
Glug had looked at the human’s arm in glee – had he finally managed to hurt the unhurtable? But there was only a strange ridge down the human’s arm, about an inch long. Glug looked at it even closer and was horrified by what he saw: he had broken the human’s skin, yes, but underneath the broken layer was… more skin.
Why him? Why??
After two (weeks?), Glug’s superiors got bored and moved on, on to other humans, other methods of gaining information about the planet they’d landed on. They gave Glug the order to cease his attempts, and then more or less forgot about Glug and the human in the abandoned earth building. The job finally over, Glug shoved away his cart of torture devices and let his exasperation and fear show.
“How?” he asked in his best impression of earthling speech. “How you not be hurt all this time?”
The human patted him on the protective case over his shoulder.
“Sorry mate, this stuff is worthless. Might work for your kind, but it takes more that that to hurt us humans.”
And since it wouldn’t do any harm now, the human told Glug about knives, and bits of iron pipe, and fire, and water, and electricity, and acid. And when it was done, Glug slunk away to ged (humans called it “to cry”?). He had never, never stood a chance against even one member of a race that could think of things like that. And he had shuddered at sticks? If the humans had things like that at their command, the invasion was already doomed.

What plant would make a good god of war? Was going to go with bamboo since I saw how much that shit grows and how it takes no prisoners but idk I wanted another opinion.

kudzu.

the government originally introduced it into US southern land as erosion control but oops, turns out its literally so invasive and aggressive its known in the modern era as “the vine that ate the south”

Star Wars is particularly good at tailoring its villains to what people of the time fear most: in the late 70’s/early 80’s, it was faceless, militaristic dictators, in the late 90’s/early 00’s it was shady politicians who seize power questionably and then immediately start wars with murky ulterior motives, and in the 10’s, it’s twentysomething white men with no self-control.

#Pray for Arianators

I’m not a fan of Ariana Grande personally, but my heart and prayers go out to everyone at the Ariana Concert in Manchester and to anyone who knows anyone who went.

For those who don’t know, explosions were heard in the arena. Many people lost their lives, got injured, or can’t find their loved ones. Please pray for them

This is becoming an extremely scary world and we need to stick together and continue to strive to be good people, no matter what.<3
