So, its been a while..

The amount of sunrise pics has not been lost on me, every morning I drive south on A1A to my causeway, (I work on mainland, live beach-side) 9 out of 10 mornings it looks like this, unbelievable blues, fire reds, oranges and yellows.

I have never really let myself regret, but there are a few, one regret I have had for the last 7 years, was that I never saw Neutral Milk Hotel play when they were together. That regret is gone, recently I got to see Jeff Mangum play his music live, two nights in a row in Athens, GA the birthplace of NMH. Over the last ten years or so he has become my generations, or my genre’s J.D. Salinger, so to speak. He created two magnificent, earth shattering albums and then disappeared, the only difference between him and Salinger was that Jeff was still active, in and out of other projects, doing everything but making his own music public. OK, fine, but I wasn’t the only one selfishly disturbed by the fact that he was all around the world, alive and well and denying us of his talent. Anyway, forget all of that, I am happy now..

I don’t think I have ever been affected by music the way those two nights affected me. I think it was partially due to the build up, and the years of wishing, but not entirely the case, Jeff Mangum played and sang his perfect music, perfectly. It was intense and bombastic for a guy and a guitar and to top it all off, satisfying a deep need to see the band back together, Scott Spillane came out ( along with Laura Carter, Andrew Rieger and Heather Macintosch) with his magic horns throughout the show, accompanying Jeff at the right moments on the right songs. Holy Hell!!

“Can’t believe how strange it is to be anything at all”

And crazy fan style: the combination of his music and lyrics dive so deep it breaks you at some level, it’s hard to keep in. It occurred to me that those feelings I feel with music, felt with his music are probably what some people feel with religion and definitely what people feel on drugs?? I don’t know, one thing is for sure the music is/was there right in front of me, in my eyes, in my ears, in my heart and not just in a fictional format that can only be read and listened to, but never proven.

No doubt I will see him again, his plans for the year are nothing short of a full blown resurgence/comeback, but I don’t think it will be the same as it was in Athens, kind of like when you read and hear about a new town, then you move to that town and everything is magic and foreign, year goes by and all of a sudden it seems so normal and everyday, maybe. I hope to whatever that he releases more music…and that he sticks around this time. If you have the chance, go see him, buy his music.

blah blah blah, hopefully I can start this up again, consistently.
