walking a tightrope

“ He was going to break my legs,” she said, her chin held high, the barest quaver in her voice. “Would you have come for me then, Kaz? When I couldn’t scale a wall or walk a tightrope? When I wasn’t the wraith anymore?”

Dirtyhands would not. The boy who could get them through this, get their money, keep them alive, would do her the courtesy of putting her out of her misery, then cut his losses and move on.

“I would come for you,” he said,

Crooked Kingdom (p.184) by Leigh Bardugo

Be kind and soft and powerful. Be the version of yourself you dreamed of being as a kid. Be the kind of person this world needs. Be confidently lost. Be astonishingly yourself. Walk the tightrope and know that you may fall, but the sky will not. Speak nectar when you can, and fire when you must. Be sad when you need to be. Feel. Flourish again, each and every spring. Be the rose amongst the thorns. Be the thorns protecting the rose. Be true. Be exactly who you are in this moment. Trust yourself. Bring magic into this world.

my insides are a cranberry bog. it’s snowing and i’m trying to teach you how to thread a needle. i want to tell you that dad left because he is who he is, but i also just want this moment to be between the two of us. once you asked me if i still believed in love after all of this. but i think mom’s been better ever since. do you remember how we all crowded together in one bed for days after. we were so worried about her we walked like tightrope performers, juggling breakfasts we burnt and dinners we made from soup cans. it’s been hard. we avoid the space he left.

but i do believe in love, i want to tell you. your tongue sticks out while you stick the string through the loop. i believe in you. i believe we can fold ourselves right. he taught me the same skill, but i taught myself the whipstitch. i taught myself the tie off. i taught myself how to teach you. your hands shake sometimes. i try not to notice when mine do. i’m saying sometimes love looks like a bonfire and sometimes it looks like a dark house - but one we’re relearning how to light candles in.

i show you how to sow. and one day we’ll all learn how to trust again.

“He was going to break my legs ,” she said, her chin held high, the barest quaver in her voice. “Would you have come for me then, Kaz? When I couldn’t scale a wall or walk a tightrope? When I wasn’t the Wraith anymore?”

“I would come for you,” he said, and when he saw the wary look she shot him, he said it again. “I would come for you. And if I couldn’t walk, I’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we’d fight our way out together—knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that’s what we do. We never stop fighting.”

sixofcrowsnw challenge: take two ( week one) → best moment of your otp (kaz x inej)

When she turned to him, her eyes were bright with anger.

“He was going to break my legs,” she said, her chins held high, the barest quaver in her voice. “Would you have come for me then, Kaz? When I couldn’t scale a wall or walk a tightrope? when I wasn’t the Wraith anymore?”

Dirtyhands would not. the boy who could get them through this, get their money, keep them alive, would do her the courtesy of putting her out of her missery , then cut his losses and move on.

“I would come for you,” he said, and when he saw the wary look she shot him, he said it again. “I would come for you. and if i couldn’t walk, i’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we’d fight our way out together-knives drawn, pistols blazing. because that’s what we do. we never stop fighting.”

The wind rose. The boughs of the willows whispered, a sly, gossiping sound. kaz held her gaze, saw the moon reflected there, twin sycthes of light. She was right to be cautious. Even of him. Especially of him. Cautious was how you survived.

Kickboxing vs aliens

So, ‘humans are weird in space’ is a favorite of mine. We’re weird just on Earth - nothing else combines bipedal movement with not having a tail. Maybe it’s like that in space, too - and the aliens are freaked out by our balance. So when they find out that some humans make entire careers out of standing on one leg and kicking - which is just a nightmare for balance, unless you’re trained for it, I’m sure - the flip out. Similar reactions to ballet and tightrope walking. They straight up doubt the existence of hockey and figure skating.

The standards for Obama had to be exceptionally high for him to even be considered by all communities. Obama wasn’t the first Black person to run for President, but he was the first successful one because he managed to walk a tightrope of everyone’s expectations. Even his family must be perfect, which was easy since the kids were not at an age where they can be seen at a threat back then. His wife was pretty much, if we’re being real, a roadblock. One that was being ridiculed from the moment we knew of her existence.

In the meantime, the current President didn’t have to walk that same tightrope. His family doesn’t have the same expectations. Hell, even his wife is now a role model for feminism simply because she isn’t expected to do the roles of the first lady.

People were so easy to criticize Obama and all his flaws. I’m not saying he isn’t without problems, but when you have to take all that goes into consideration for him to even run, you have to wonder why wasn’t the same pressures placed on the current President. We know why, but we won’t be honest. To be honest is to admit something that you try to hide for centuries.

even and magnus are hiding something from isak.

When both of their phones go off at the same time, it means either one of two things: 1) Eskild is telling them to keep the noise levels down, or 2) there’s a new message in the guys’ groupchat.

Since the closest contact they have with each other’s fun zones (at the present moment, at least) is Isak lying with his head in Even’s lap, Even can only assume it’s the latter.

the reason it’s called borderline personality disorder is because it was originally thought to be the “borderline” between neurosis and psychosis. being borderline, to me, means always feeling like you might fall too far to one side. it’s walking on a tightrope and trying to survive. but it’s also bright and vivid and being so alive. it’s a weird life, but don’t ever let anyone tell you it isn’t one worth living.
