walk a tightrope

Be kind and soft and powerful. Be the version of yourself you dreamed of being as a kid. Be the kind of person this world needs. Be confidently lost. Be astonishingly yourself. Walk the tightrope and know that you may fall, but the sky will not. Speak nectar when you can, and fire when you must. Be sad when you need to be. Feel. Flourish again, each and every spring. Be the rose amongst the thorns. Be the thorns protecting the rose. Be true. Be exactly who you are in this moment. Trust yourself. Bring magic into this world.

“He was going to break my legs ,” she said, her chin held high, the barest quaver in her voice. “Would you have come for me then, Kaz? When I couldn’t scale a wall or walk a tightrope? When I wasn’t the Wraith anymore?”

Dirtyhands would not. The boy who could get them through this, get their money, keep them alive, would do her the courtesy of putting her out of her misery, then cut his losses and move on.

“I would come for you,” he said, and when he saw the wary look she shot him, he said it again. “I would come for you. And if I couldn’t walk, I’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we’d fight our way out together—knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that’s what we do. We never stop fighting.”

When she turned to him, her eyes were bright with anger.

“He was going to break my legs,” she said, her chins held high, the barest quaver in her voice. “Would you have come for me then, Kaz? When I couldn’t scale a wall or walk a tightrope? when I wasn’t the Wraith anymore?”

Dirtyhands would not. the boy who could get them through this, get their money, keep them alive, would do her the courtesy of putting her out of her missery , then cut his losses and move on.

“I would come for you,” he said, and when he saw the wary look she shot him, he said it again. “I would come for you. and if i couldn’t walk, i’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we’d fight our way out together-knives drawn, pistols blazing. because that’s what we do. we never stop fighting.”

The wind rose. The boughs of the willows whispered, a sly, gossiping sound. kaz held her gaze, saw the moon reflected there, twin sycthes of light. She was right to be cautious. Even of him. Especially of him. Cautious was how you survived.

my insides are a cranberry bog. it’s snowing and i’m trying to teach you how to thread a needle. i want to tell you that dad left because he is who he is, but i also just want this moment to be between the two of us. once you asked me if i still believed in love after all of this. but i think mom’s been better ever since. do you remember how we all crowded together in one bed for days after. we were so worried about her we walked like tightrope performers, juggling breakfasts we burnt and dinners we made from soup cans. it’s been hard. we avoid the space he left.

but i do believe in love, i want to tell you. your tongue sticks out while you stick the string through the loop. i believe in you. i believe we can fold ourselves right. he taught me the same skill, but i taught myself the whipstitch. i taught myself the tie off. i taught myself how to teach you. your hands shake sometimes. i try not to notice when mine do. i’m saying sometimes love looks like a bonfire and sometimes it looks like a dark house - but one we’re relearning how to light candles in.

i show you how to sow. and one day we’ll all learn how to trust again.

Kickboxing vs aliens

So, ‘humans are weird in space’ is a favorite of mine. We’re weird just on Earth - nothing else combines bipedal movement with not having a tail. Maybe it’s like that in space, too - and the aliens are freaked out by our balance. So when they find out that some humans make entire careers out of standing on one leg and kicking - which is just a nightmare for balance, unless you’re trained for it, I’m sure - the flip out. Similar reactions to ballet and tightrope walking. They straight up doubt the existence of hockey and figure skating.

Spike pulling that trick all kids play on their two guardians against each other, be they parents, aunts/uncles, etc., all in effort to get more sweets. And poor Luna trying to walk that tightrope of figuring out how much authority she actually has with a child that isn’t her own, a battle many step-parents know (and those in similar situations).
