Any advice and/or tips on writing and characterizing Armin and Annie? I'm always scared of going OOC with them. Enlighten me with your AruAni wisdom.
I’m honored you’d come to me for this omg. I’m happy with how I write them both but I’m sure I’ve slipped up lol ajdkfdjgh It’s something that’s a little subjective at times, you know?
The only advice I can give is to not rely so much on fandom interpretation. Fandom’s tend to flanderize characters or focus too much on one aspect of their personality while ignore others; which is great if it’s just like ya know joking around or not serious, but sometimes it gets out of hand and people start actually thinking a character is as they appear in certain fan works. For example, Armin’s not traditionally masculine in any way, but some people have turned him into some squishy cry baby that’s waiting for Eren to carry him in his arms. On the flip side, people ALSO tend to flanderize Armin as being some weird manipulative sadistic cartoon villain and tbh I can’t tell which one pisses me off more lmao
I guess I can also say to remember these things: Annie’s not (for lack of a better term) mean, and my god she’s not a tsundere like. One of my biggest sore spots in this fandom is peoples weird tendency to portray Annie as some tsundere sticking her nose up at whatever dude is being paired with her and I partially blame the Junior High spinoff but that’s another beast entirely. It’s bad, it doesn’t fit Annie’s character at all, I DON’T LIKE SEEING IT AND MY RAGE SWELLS EACH TIME
and I guess I can say something that I always try to keep in mind is to have a sense of humor while writing them. Armin and Annie are both characters with a certain amount of awareness and smarts that can lead to some fun inner commentary when writing from their perspectives. (but I will also point out that Armin doesn’t always get sarcasm, which is one of my favorite things about him lmao. ALSO they’re both a little morbid, which is always fun to run with.)
Anyway I hope this helps!! I’m by no means an expert, I’m sure someone out there will read this through gritted teeth and cursing my very being, but these are things I keep in mind. Good luck nonny <3
