Sounding Rocket Science in the Arctic

We sent three suborbital sounding rockets right into the auroras above Alaska on the evening of March 1 local time from the Poker Flat Research Range north of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Sounding rockets are suborbital rockets that fly up in an arc and immediately come back down, with a total flight time around 20 minutes.

Though these rockets don’t fly fast enough to get into orbit around Earth, they still give us valuable information about the sun, space, and even Earth itself. Sounding rockets’ low-cost access to space is also ideal for testing instruments for future satellite missions.

Sounding rockets fly above most of Earth’s atmosphere, allowing them to see certain types of light – like extreme ultraviolet and X-rays – that don’t make it all the way to the ground because they are absorbed by the atmosphere. These kinds of light give us a unique view of the sun and processes in space.

The sun seen in extreme ultraviolet light by the Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite.

Of these three rockets, two were part of the Neutral Jets in Auroral Arcs mission, collecting data on winds influenced by the electric fields related to auroras. Sounding rockets are the perfect vehicle for this type of study, since they can fly directly through auroras – which exist in a region of Earth’s upper atmosphere too high for scientific balloons, but too low for satellites.

The third rocket that launched on March 1 was part of the ISINGLASS mission (short for Ionospheric Structuring: In Situ and Ground-based Low Altitude Studies). ISINGLASS included two rockets designed to launch into two different types of auroras in order to collect detailed data on their structure, with the hope of better understanding the processes that create auroras. The initial ISINGLASS rocket launched a few weeks earlier, on Feb. 22, also from the Poker Flat Research Range in Alaska.

Auroras are caused when charged particles trapped in Earth’s vast magnetic field are sent raining down into the atmosphere, usually triggered by events on the sun that propagate out into space.

Team members at the range had to wait until conditions were just right until they could launch – including winds, weather, and science conditions. Since these rockets were studying aurora, that means they had to wait until the sky was lit up with the Northern Lights.

Regions near the North and South Pole are best for studying the aurora, because the shape of Earth’s magnetic field naturally funnels aurora-causing particles near the poles.

But launching sensitive instruments near the Arctic Circle in the winter has its own unique challenges. For example, rockets have to be insulated with foam or blankets every time they’re taken outside – including while on the launch pad – because of the extremely low temperatures.

The Birth of the Fifth Sun, the Mexica (Aztec) sacred narrative which tells of the birth of our current sun. The paintings are posted in order, and follow the progress of the narrative told below.

14.1 It is said that when the earth was still dark, when there was yet no warmth, nor day, nor light, the Teteo came together at Teotihuacan to take counsel, and there they lit the Spirit Fires, great blazes set atop the twin pyramids of the sacred city. For four years they burned.  “Come here, oh Teteo! Who shall carry the sun? Who shall bear it? The warming, the dawning? The burning fire? The celestial Light? Who shall leap into the Spirit Fire?” Than forth stepped Four Flint, Tecuciztecatl, Our Lord of Snails, and he cried out, “Oh Teteo! Indeed, it shall be I!” Yoaltecuhtli and Tlaloc stepped forward, “You are one who must keep the sky and the earth.”
14.2 “And yet, another is needed,” said the Teteo. “Who shall be the other?” Yet the Teteo were frightened, and none among them stepped forth. They took counsel with one another, and summoned Nanahuatzin, The Pimpled Lord, the Crippled One, and summoned him to the counsel. Tonacatecuhtli and Xiuhtecuhtli stepped forward and said to him, “You are the one who must keep the sky and the earth.” Many tears did Nanahuatzin shed, for he felt unequal to the task, he, the worthless invalid.
14.3 The Teteo Nanahuatzin and Tecuciztecatl began their fasts, their sacrifices, in preparation for the Spirit Fire, the God Oven. Tecuciztecatl prepared himself with precious things. His fasting-ropes were of quetzal feathers, and his ritual branches of cotinga plumes. His grass heart was of woven gold, his incense of the finest copal. He did not offer his own blood, his own Yollia, but instead offered maguey thorns and  lancets made of coral. Resplendent he looked, shining and beautiful, as he made his sacrifices.
14.4 Nanahuatzin, the Crippled Lord, the Teotl in poverty, formed his fasting-rope of grass and paper. His ritual branches were made of green grass and green reeds, tied in three bundles, bound bundles of nine each. His bloodletting spine was of bone, well reddened with his own blood. His only incense were his scabs, twisted off and cast into the fire.
For four days they fasted, for four days they drew blood and meditated their sacred actions, there upon their respective pyramids. When they had completed their days of sacrifice, they burned their ritual branches, their bloodletting instruments, in the sacred fire. They were become slaves. They were become Gods.
14.5 To Tecuciztecatl, the gathered Teteo gave him his egret headdress, his elegant attire of quetzal and jade.
14.6 But Nanahuatzin was attired only in paper, only in cloth of Maguey. They painted the Teteo in white, they chalked them, and adorned them in eagle-down feathers.
15.1 Tecuciztecatl, as the senior Lord, approached the fire first, to leap into its heart. The fire roared, it crackled, it seared his eyes. He grew faint and afraid. He hesitated. He could not bring himself to leap into the fire.Than Nanahuatzin, the Crippled Lord, seeing the terror of the other, walked forward. Bravely he walked, slowly, so as to feel its heat. And when he reached the Spirit Fire, the God Oven, he leapt into its heart and was consumed.
Tecuciztecatl grew ashamed, and found his spirit, and he too leapt into the Spirit Fire, but lacking the bravery of Nanahuatzin, he fell only into its embers and ashes, where he, too, was consumed.
The Jaguar and the Eagle were among the company of the Teteo, and both leapt over the Spirit Fire. They were singed, they were burned, in its tongues of flame, and thus acquired their spots and dark feathers. For their bravery they were made warriors, ever to serve the sun.

16.1 When, in this way, the two Teteo had thrown themselves into the God Oven, when they had burned to ash, the Teteo sat awaiting to learn from whence they would emerge. Long they waited, meditating in the darkness, when all at once everywhere it became red, everywhere the light of dawn, the reddening of dawn. The Teteo knelt down, facing each of the four directions, to see from whence the sun would emerge at this first dawning of the Fifth Sun. The Teteo fell into confusion; they turned in circles, they faced all directions. The traditional orations, the traditional words, did not bring clarity to the Teteo. Some thought he would emerge from Mictlán, the Place of the Dead, and faced North, to find him there. Some thought The Place of Women, and faced the West, some, The House of Thorns, and faced the South, for the light of the dawning encircled all things, and confusion reigned.
Yet some of the Teteo faced the East, the Place of Light, and cried out, “Already, is he there, already, his light illuminates his Eastern Palace! Behold, he is emerging!” Those who waited there, who pointed there, were Quetzalcoátl and his nagual Xolotl. There too was Our Lord Anahuatl, the Red Tezcatlipoca, and the Mimixcoa without number. And there awaited four women; Tiacapan, Teicu, Tlacoyehua, and Xocoyotl.
And as the sun rose, his light spread like the red Cochineal dye throughout the East, his dazzling brilliance was such that he could not be faced. He shone, he illuminated, and light came into this world. And afterward, Tecciztecatl, too, arose from the Place of Light, also golden and shining, impossible to behold; a second sun.
16.2 And the Teteo said; “How can this be? Shall there be two suns, who both shall follow the same road, who both shall shine in the same way? The brave Nanahuatzin and the unworthy Tecciztecatl?” And so, Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli, The Morning Star, snatched a rabbit from the earth and flung it in the face of Tecciztecatl. Thus, was his face wrecked and his light dimmed, and he fell into the ashes.
17.1 The Teteo declared, “No longer shall he be known as Nanahuatzin, the Pimpled Lord, the Crippled God. He is Tonatiuh, Our Lord the Sun!” And Tonacatecuhtli and Tonacacihuatl, the Lord and Lady of Our Flesh, Our Sustenance, rose to his place at the center of the sky. They bathed and anointed him. They sat him in his Quechol chair. They adorned his head with the butterfly crest, the red-leather thong.
17.2 But he would not move from his place. Four days he remained at the Zenith, at the center of the sky. “Why does he not move?” asked the Teteo, and they sent the Falcon of the Obsidian Blade to ask why he was immobile in the sky.
“I hunger!” replied Tonatiuh. “I need their blood, their precious color, their Yollotl, to find the strength to move across the sky. I need the blood of those who sent me to the Spirit Fire!”
17.3 When the Falcon returned to the gathered Teteo and gave them his message, they were much saddened and afraid. Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli grew angry and cried out, “I will shoot him! He must not stay immobile in the sky!” But his arrows could not reach the sun. Yet the sun, from his lofty perch, shot down his own arrows, his shafts of flame, and they burned the body of The Morning Star, and with the Nine Layers covered up his face, and transformed him into Itztli, the Teótl of the Obsidian Blade, of cold, frost, snow, and judgement.
18.1 Quetzalcoátl raised his eyes sadly to the sky, and spoke to the gods at Teotihuacan. “May he be revived. May we all die!” And the gods mournfully submitted to his will. And so with the Sacred Flint Blade he slit the throats of the gathered Gods; of Titlacahuan, and Huitzilopochtli, and the Goddesses Xochiquetzal, Yapalliicue, and Nochpalliicue. But Xolotl, the god of twins and monstrosities and who is the sprit double of Quetzalcoátl, did not want to die. He fled Quetzalcoátl and his terrible blade. He wept so that his eyes fell from their sockets. “Send me not to the blade, oh Gods! Let me not die!”
18.2 He fled, and Death quickly followed. He followed him to the fields of young corn, were Xolotl transformed himself into the young maize with two stalks in order to hide from Death. He became the Xolotl of the Field. But he was seen by the eyes of Death there among the corn, from whom nothing may be hidden, and so he ran to the Maguey field, and there he turned himself into the double maguey, the Maguey Xolotl. But there too was he seen by the eyes of Death, and so he escaped to the lake, and there turned himself into the Axolotl, the lake-salamander. But there was no more escape, and Death caught him, and Quetzalcoátl slit his throat, amid his tears and lamentations.
19.1 The blood of the Gods rose to the heavens and Tonatiuh drank the sacred strength of their Yollia, on the day Nahui Ollin, Four Movement, the sacred name and destiny of the Fifth Sun. Yet still he could not move, still he could not follow his path.
20.1 But Quetzalcoátl, who had shed the blood of the Gods, who had released the divine force of their Yollia, grew strong and straight. He ran, and blew lightly in the face of the sun, and so pushed him along his path, and than slit his own throat, that his blood and divine Yollia might make the revolutions of the heavens eternal.
Thus it was that as the sun was entering into the earth again, into the open jaws of Our Mother, Tlaltecuhtli, the moon arose from the ashes into which he had fallen, and there at the crossroads met the Tzitzimime, the Star Demons, and the Coleletin, and they detained him a while, and dressed him in rags. He who would have been the sun, who would have been clothed in splendor. And thus it is that on the day Four Movement night and day came into being, and the deaths of the gods established the covenant of sacrifice with men.

[TRANS] STARCAST interview with BTS after Jungkook’s graduation

☞ BTS is still the same as they were then [back when Jungkook entered SOPA]. If there was something that has changed, it would be this graduation. Therefore, we will begin a mini interview that we prepared.

“It seemed like just yesterday when I had entered [SOPA], so I think that time passes by quickly. Now that I have graduated, I feel that I need to act and behave more maturely and responsibly.” (Jungkook)

The members who watched Jungkook’s graduation probably felt different from anyone else.

“I went to all of the members’ graduations. But, for this graduation, it felt like some accident might happen and that a lot of people would gather, so we were a bit worried. It was a relief that it ended safely.” (Suga)

“I’ve seen Jungkook since he was 15 years old. It felt as if I was raising him for six years. He really seems to have improved a lot, so I’m proud.” (Jin)

One more thing that has changed. When Jungkook entered [SOPA], BTS were rookies. But, after three years have passed, they have now become Daesang artists.

“After thinking about it, it’s really amazing. After the graduation ceremony ended and I was coming down, male fans were taking pictures of me while saying ‘Jungkookie-hyung.’ It feels like our fans have diversified?” (Jungkook)

BTS’ album release on the 13th is coming up. I wonder how they prepared.

“We are now in a time where we are moving from winter onto spring. I feel like [the album] will really match well with that vibe. [This album] will have [songs with] calm vibes as well as upbeat songs, it’s a very diverse gift set.”

“Every time an album comes out, it’s burdensome. We compose while thinking that every moment is important. It is now the beginning again. It will be okay as long as we work hard during promotions.” (Rap Monster, Suga)

Starting with the Gocheok Dome concert, BTS is also leaving for their world tour. They conveyed their excitement about the world tour ahead.

“Of course we are awaiting it. Especially for South and North America it’s been a long time. They are waiting for us with incredibly passionate energy. Therefore, we are more excited. We think it will be really fun.” (Jimin, Suga)

After [Jungkook] paid, he turned around and left a supporting message for his friends* who are also graduating.

“There will be those friends who go to university. There will also be those friends who become employed and go into social life. I hope that we can all work hard and set on foot towards each of our dreams. After experiencing social life, it seems that hard work pays off. Please fly together towards your dreams with Bangtan’s new song.”

*T/N: ‘Friends’ refers to those in Jungkook’s graduating class, not necessarily people he is friends with.

i saw a similar post about writing tips when it comes to having paris as a setting, so i thought it would be helpful to have the same thing except for……new york city! as a native new yorker i love seeing my home appearing in fics, because lbr nyc is pretty awesome. so if you’re looking to make nyc your setting, here are some tips when writing about it. these can help establish if your character is a native or non-native.

—first off, nyc is technically not one city. it’s five cities. the boroughs of manhattan, queens, staten island, bronx, and brooklyn are all part of nyc. however, the nyc that’s always on tv/movies is manhattan.

—if you live in any of the four other boroughs, manhattan is always referred to as “the city”. so if your character lives in brooklyn but is heading out to central park, they’re going to the city.

—public transportation is the way to go. unless it’s staten island, where cars are the easiest way to go. mta fare is $2.75 and we use metrocards. trains are divided by uptown and downtown, and some are express and some are local. we do not refer to the train lines by their color—only by their number or letter. buses are designated by their borough; a manhattan bus would have M in front of the number.

—taxis are mad expensive and sometimes public transportation can be too when you need to take a combo of buses and trains. many new yorkers walk a lot. the reason we walk fast is bc it makes it easier to get to your destination. walking up ten blocks can only take ten minutes if you speedwalk basically. which is why slow walkers annoy us, especially when they stop suddenly.

—trains run slower during weekends and nights so your character might be in for quite a wait. bus generally take 10 minutes to come, unless it’s a popular route. then buses come every five minutes.

—except for the very southern part of manhattan, the roads are numbered. so areas such as greenwich village, wall street, little italy, and chinatown do not have streets with numbers. streets run from east to west; avenues run from south to north. the east & west streets are separated by 5th Avenue. numbers increase as you move north and/or to the west.

—you can always find pizza and hot dogs for a dollar. busy areas such as times square and central park will try to overcharge you. no new yorker would be gullible enough to pay $2 for a pizza slice. for cheap $1 pizza, the chain 2Bros is good. speaking of pizza, we fold it in half bc it is easier to eat and walk then.

—a distinctly new yorker thing is saying “on the line”. such as asking someone “are you on the line?” no other state says this. drive into new jersey and they’ll say “in the line”.

—there is one international airport and one domestic airport for nyc, which are both in queens. there’s JFK (international) and La Guardia (domestic). a third option is newark airport (also international) in new jersey.

—smoking is not allowed in nyc parks nor in most public spaces whatsoever. also the legal age for smoking and drinking is 21.

—if your character is a college student, all public colleges are branded as CUNY (City University of New York). every borough has at least one CUNY college. public colleges have “cheap” tuition rates, which are usually around $5000-$8000. the “famous” colleges in NYC are not public. NYU and Columbia are both private and are ridiculously expensive. Wagner College (private) in Staten Island has a really good performing arts/music program.

—new yorkers avoid many of the sightseeing places bc they’re expensive and overcrowded. i have lived my whole life in nyc (almost 20 years) and have only visited the Empire State Building for the first time this summer—and that’s only bc my internship covers the expense of my tickets to such places.

—speaking of expenses, most of the homes in the boroughs are apartments. Staten Island however is suburban and residential. houses are abundant there. in manhattan, houses which are really just townhouses, are super expensive. we’re talking millions here.

—manhattan is an island. so is staten island. the only ways off manhattan are by cars/buses over bridges or tunnels, or by trains. the only way off staten island is by car, bus, or the Staten Island Ferry. the ferry is free of charge, running 24/7 between SI and Manhattan. all bridges have tolls, where ezpass holders have lower rates.

—yes we’re the city that never sleeps, but we do sleep. some areas like times square don’t appear to. i’ve shopped at the forever 21 in times square at 1 AM. it was still crowded.

—SI has a predominant Italian and Sri Lankan community. Queens has a predominant Indian community, most especially in the Jackson Heights neighborhood.

—coney island is in brooklyn. the rides are fun but expensive. the beach is crowded and dirty. brighton beach and rockaway beach are better choices. staten island has a more calmer (and actually fourth longest in the usa) boardwalk.

—if you’re mailing something to manhattan, the address should be written as new york, new york. it would not be manhattan, new york.

this got really long but if your heart is set on writing within new york, i think it’s really important to get your setting right. like i said before, these tips can really help your character stand out or not as someone who is or isn’t from new york. i hope this helps for all the fabulous writers out there!

The puddle of water reflected the lights of Pop’s Chock'lit Shoppe. It was almost 11 PM but the dinner was still filled with people. A girl, around the age of seventeen, sat in a red Jeep. Loud music was playing while she scrolled through her phone. It was clear to everyone that she was waiting for someone. This, someone, was FP Jones, the fearless leader of the Southside Serpents. The Serpents lived on the south side of Riverdale and were feared by the north, west and east. They were especially known for drugs, alcohol, and stealing. The girl was born and raised as a Serpent. At some point, her parents began to care less and she began to hang out with Joaquin and he was the reason, how she met FP.

Right now, she was waiting for him. She only went with him because he promised her some food, which she probably won’t get. After all, an invisible rule said that the Serpents were actually not allowed in the other parts of Riverdale. The only thing she knew about his business was that it was with someone called Lodge. The girl moved her eyes to the nearest cars; Cheryl Blossom’s Car. She was the queen bee of Riverdale High, and the youngest and now only child of the Blossom Family.

Just because she had the money, the red-haired witch thought she could rule Riverdale, mostly the whole world. Before she could drift even more into her thoughts, the door of the driver side opened. FP had an angry look on his face while fastening his seat belts. The girl looked concerned and reached out for his hand. The older man moved his face to look at her, and his eyes soften. “Everything okay?” she asked him while he wiped the sweat away from his forehead. “Yeah, nothing your pretty head has to worry about,” he told her with a wink. The teenager girl was about to answer when she felt a pair of eyes staring at her. A waitress was staring at them, with a deathly glare. FP touched her shoulder which caused the girl to look at him again. He caressed her cheek and moved towards to kiss her.

Dragon Farming Locations

These are my favourite spots to farm the Dragon Trio. They’re easy to get to, good vantage points for slow mo archery, and you can see the dragon approach to time your jump correctly.

Area: Faron Region
Jump Location: Floria Bridge
Nearest Shrine: Shai Utoh
Armour: Rubber Lv. 2

Farosh spawns from the spring at the top of the cliffs, so avoid looking directly up there, and his path takes him directly under the bridge. You can just glide down to the level of the part you need and fire away.

Area: Lanayru Region
Jump Location: East Necluda
Nearest Shrine: Dow Na'eh
Armour: Snowquill Lv. 2

Naydra of course spawns at the top of Mt. Lanayru, so just wait and look around until the wind picks up. There’s lots of different vantage points here and she will past by right next to you, so you don’t need to fly far.

Area: Tabantha Region
Jump Location: Tabantha Great Bridge
Nearest Shrine: Tena Ko'sah
Armour: Flamebreaker Lv. 2

Dinraal spawns around Death Mountain but he won’t appear if you’re staring down the canyon north, so look south off the bridge until the gales start. Like Farosh, he’ll pass right under the bridge so just drop and glide to meet him.

Happy Hunting~

“He’s not here,” you fired back without a second of thought, your voice flat but stronger than you’d expected.

“Oh no point in lying to me, sweetheart,” he laughed heartily, “Of course he is.” A searing red streak drew your attention overhead. Tony. The Commander’s gaze followed the same trajectory as yours, watching the bright red suit sail closer and closer. “Though, I’ll admit I wasn’t expecting all of the Power Rangers.”

In the Night:

It’s late; her room shrouded with darkness, the soft pinks and coordinated pastels disappearing into shades of black. Betty likes the nights. She likes the stillness outside her window, the insanity of the town fading away for a few hours as the people slept. The line drawn between the North and South sides of Riverdale ever so stark in the day, blurring into the cloak of ebony; still inherently there, but easier to ignore.

But there was one thing about the nights that she liked far more than any of its rivals. And that thing was the dark haired boy that climbed through her window as the hours of late night morphed into early morning.

He would clamber through the frame sometimes with a charming smile on his lips and a light in his eyes, sometimes with a deep frown and a tense jaw. Sometimes he would find her with clenched fists and tear stained cheeks, other nights a playful smirk and a teasing comment. His beanie discarded, her hair down they would talk into the next day about school, movies, books and his new home, about civil wars and leather jackets, about well-established facades, jailed fathers, pregnant sisters, and struggling friends.

Sometimes they would lie comfortably on the bed, leaning into each other, subtle brushes of hands on skin or through hair. And other nights-nights like this one- their embraces were much more passionate, their intent far from innocent. On nights like this, they would muffle moans in pillows and necks; make the other writhe as they succumbed to the inferno they had built. Their eyes would meet heady and dark, a breath would hitch, a groan would resound, fingers reaching, filthy words whispered in ears. It was slow and sensual, hot and heavy, fast and passionate; an intricate push and pull of control.

New Jersey Gothic
  • Jerseyites don’t pump their own gas.  It’s illegal to.  You don’t know what would happen if you stepped out of your car at a gas station, and you don’t want to.
  • Fifteen years ago you honed your aim, proud of your ability to toss change into a toll basket while driving past it at 45 MPH on the Garden State Parkway.  Now they’ve consolidated and raised the tolls.  You get an EZPass so you can still outrun the thing lurking in the Cash Receipt lane.
  • The Parkway and the Turnpike stretch across the state like arteries.  You speed down them at 80 MPH, you are a blood cell in your red car.  You wonder where the heart is, but your exit comes before the beating becomes loud enough to drown out the sound of your horn as you flip off someone with a New York plate for cutting you off.
  • Not New York.  Not Philadelphia.  Proud to be New Jersey!” your radio declares.  You scoff.  As if they’re the only radio station in New Jersey.  You scan through the stations until you find another one from New Jersey.  “Not New York.  Not Philadelphia.  Proud to be New Jersey!” your radio declares.  You scoff.  As if they’re the only radio station in New Jersey.  You scan through the stations until you find another one from New Jersey.  “Not New York.  Not Philadelphia.  Proud to be New Jersey!” your radio declares.  You scoff …
  • You drive up Route 18 and even though it’s the middle of the night, there’s traffic because there’s construction up ahead.  You sit there and inch forward.  Ten years go by.  The construction finally ends.  You can see your exit up ahead.  It’s closed due to construction.
  • “Why is New Jersey even called the Garden State?” they ask.  “It’s just a bunch of highways, landfills, and industrial complexes.”  They can’t see.  They’ll never see.  We won’t let them see.  We won’t let them take it from us.
  • Your friends from North Jersey say that you’re from South Jersey.  Your friends from South Jersey say that you’re from North Jersey.  The truth is that you don’t even exist.
  • Sometimes you like to sit out on your deck at night, listen to the crickets and the late-night traffic, and look up in the sky at the stars.  Tonight there’s more lights up in the sky, blinking and zooming across the constellations.  You sip your tea and smile.  Another exciting night for your friends in North Jersey.  You wonder which ones will survive this time.
  • You can’t imagine living in a state so big you need to get on a plane to fly across it.  New Jersey’s such a nice convenient size.  You could get in your car and start driving and be at the mountains in two hours.  Or New York City.  Or Philadelphia.  Or the beach or the woods or the mall or the amusement park.  Everything in New Jersey is two hours away.  Only the driving time while you’re conscious counts.
  • You have a love-hate relationship with New York City.  It’s so close and convenient and romantic.  But it also steals New Jersey’s tourists.  Its sports teams.  Its work force.  Your friends.  Your family.  Your pet cat.  Half of your wardrobe.  Your senses of accomplishment and modesty.  The memories of your childhood birthday parties.  You cling to the lawn outside of your significant other’s home, begging New York City not to steal it too.
  • Did you know that Frank Sinatra was from New Jersey?  Did you know that Meryl Streep is from New Jersey?  Jon Bon Jovi?  Jack Nicholson?  Kevin Smith?  George R.R. Martin?  Bruce Springsteen?  They’re heroes in New Jersey.  They escaped.  We know that they’ll return someday to save the rest of us from the things that live in the Cash Reciept lanes.
  • The Jersey Devil lives in the Pine Barrens, you tell all of your out-of-state friends.  They’ve never heard of it, of course.  They think that the New Jersey Devils are named after Satan (but then, they also think that the New Jersey Devils are just a hockey team).  You insist that if they just spent one night in South Jersey they would understand, just one night, come on, you insist.  You insist.  But no, they don’t believe you, they’re leaving and you panic because they don’t understand.  They don’t understand you’re just trying to save them.  The Pine Barrens are the only place it cannot go.
  • It’s almost that time of year again, time for the New Jersey Balloon Festival.  You can’t wait, all of those colorful hot air balloons, and the family-friendly activities, and the carnival food.  You have so much fun every year.  You can’t ever remember having actually gone, but.  It was fun.  Right?
  • New Jersey used to be one of the most popular vacation spots in the country.  But not anymore.  No one visits New Jersey anymore, they just drive through going somewhere else.  Sometimes they get off the Turnpike, though, by accident, end up on a highway they’ve never heard of, going south when the signs tell them they’re going north.  But no one ever visits New Jersey.
Conversation that I have on a weekly basis.
  • Me: I don't get it? Why would JonxDaenerys make sense? I just... don't get why people want this? Why they think it could work? Jon and Daenerys are two entirely different people.
  • Jonerys shipper: Well, they have parallels.
  • Me: But... parallels don't mean romance? I personally think they're actually foils.
  • Jonerys shipper: But, blue rose from wall of ice!
  • Me: that's just an R+L=J hint.
  • Jonerys shipper: They're the song of ice and fire!!!
  • Me: sorry, but no. Jon is half Stark, half Targaryen, he does not need Daenerys. There's no point in R+L=J if Jon ends up representing ice alone.
  • Jonerys shipper: they're the two main characters!
  • Me: GRRM himself said Jon and Dany cover 10% of the story, in fact, he said the Starks are the heart of A Song of Ice and Fire. That means Jon, Sansa, Arya and Bran. Not Daenerys.
  • Jonerys shipper: they're the main heroes of the story!
  • Me: you tell that to all the cities Daenerys destroyed. A villain is a hero from the other side. GRRM compared her conquering Mereen to the US invasion of Iraq.
  • Jonerys shipper: Jon and Dany are the last Targaryens.
  • Me: and GRRM himself said incest is what destroyed the Targaryens, why end the story with some more?
  • Jonerys shipper: Jon likes power women who don't wait around in a tower but do stuff!
  • Me: true, but he doesn't like self-entitlement, ignorance and arrogance... plus, Daenerys does a lot of waiting in towers, as her dragons conquer for her and the men in her life solve the mess she made.
  • Jonerys shipper: but it makes political sense. They could unite the south and the north.
  • Me: Jon marrying Dany doesn't help him a fig politically in the North, and he doesn't care about the south. Again, he doesn't need Dany.
  • Jonerys shipper: anything can happen in ASOIAF even cliches.
  • Me: haha no.
Casting circles for different countries

The traditional associations of casting circles are pretty simple: call the spirits of the elements at each of the cardinal directions, invoke whatever deity or deities with whom you work, “brush” or push the negative forces out from within the circle to without it, and then seal it with your own magick and Will.

The problem is, though, that this was created by people living in the United Kingdom, and as such it was created with the UK’s cardinal directions in mind. These are not always appropriate for where you live, though! Traditionally, you would invoke

Earth in the East
Fire in the South
Water in the West
Air in the North

But here in Australia that makes no sense. In Britain, the further south (towards the equator) you move, the hotter it gets… but in Australia you move NORTH to approach the equator. Fire spirits would be found more towards the North of Australia where the heat is greater and the days are more equal.

In Britain, with the Arctic to the North, Air is placed in the far North as Air spirits love the cold and winds of tundra plains. However, being a Southern hemisphere country, Australia’s cold region is the Antarctic to the South, and so it makes more sense to listen to the Air spirits there, where you’ll actually find them.

Here on the East Coast of Australia the beautiful Great Dividing Range - a vast mountain range that stretches for thousands of miles and divides our beautiful nation in twain - and the bulk of the Australian continent stretch out towards the West. Meanwhile, to our East, the south Pacific ocean flows with vast Ocean spirits that bring cyclones and thunderstorms to our fair continent. So it makes sense to not place Earth in the East like in the UK (where Europe is all eastwards) but instead in the West, and likewise place Water in the East where the largest ocean on Earth sits, placidly, waiting to devour us all.

But, of course, this is not the same for all! Japan might choose to have the Air of Hokkaido and the Arctic in the North, equatorial Fire in the South, Pacific Water in the East, and Asian Earth in the West; Kenya might have Fire in the East to represent the great Sahara Desert, Water in the West, Earth in the North and Air in the South. The world s full of diversity, and adhering rigidly to the rules of a bunch of 1920s British Wiccans who’d barely even left England in their entire lives and had never seen a non-white person probably isn’t the best idea in our modern world of inexpensive plane tickets and cultural diversity.

Live on, my bright Wiccans and Witches of the wider world, and let the Spirits of your own lands guide you!

Lake Shore Drive after Rush Hour is beautiful, empty. That, plus the added late night summer air rushing through rolled down windows, it all makes you feel weightless, free, adventurous.

But tonight’s adventure is not really one of your own, but your boyfriend, who sits behind the wheel with one hand gripping the tattered leather and the other rubbing at your bare thigh. It’s a situation you two have been in more than a handful of times this summer, sneaking out of the gated community of your north side homes, travelling the half hour path to get to your friends waiting for you on the south side, your and Jeongguk’s safe haven. On eroded streets littered with potholes and weeds growing from sidewalk cracks is where you feel the most at ease.

Electricity thrums from the palm wrapped around your skin. Jeongguk is excited for the race tonight, ready to show his friends how much he has improved since their last race. You truly have no interest, unaffected by your boyfriend’s competitive side. You have been with him too long to care, but also because you know your disinterest makes him work even harder to win.
