I agree with you about Raven. She cares about Yang. In volume 4 you can see that she get upset when Qrow comments about her being "the mom of the year" or when he say she has a "weird perception of family" is she didn't care she would at like that. I think she think doesn't know how to be a good mother because of the environment that she grew up. I think was more influenced than Qrow. So she loved the tribe and team STRQ just the same.
Raven is just such a fascinating character. There’s a reason she’s pretty solidly number 5 on my list after the RWBY girls.
Like, yeah, she’s obviously a shitty mom. She never had the chance to be a mom, I guess aside from whatever time she spent with baby Yang before she left that was enough for her to be able to bond with her?, so it’s kind of hard to call her a good mom, but she still cares about Yang in some capacity. I’ve been sure that she cares since her very first appearance in volume 2.
Volume 4 lowkey implies that Raven and Qrow were taken in by the bandits as children when they had nowhere to go because “the tribe raised us,” so it kind of makes sense that Raven’s so loyal to them.
Raven’s just. So interesting and it kind of baffles me that some people are unwilling to consider her motivations beyond “She’s a bitch.” She’s made bad decisions, but she’s not as antagonistic towards the main cast as people act like she is. She’s not evil or even trying to get in their way.
Qrow said Raven gave him a tip for “his latest assignment.” An assignment we can only assume Ozpin gave him. Raven doesn’t trust Ozpin or believe in him, but it seems like she still helped Qrow do something for him.
And Raven not wanting to send Yang to Qrow and Ruby comes off as her being worried about Yang and not wanting to send her to her death. Yeah, it’s Yang’s decision and not Raven’s, but she’s still doing it because she cares and not just because she’s a bitch. And she even ends up relenting and agreeing to send Yang to them, but only after she tells them her version of the truth because Qrow’s version is biased.
Not that Raven’s isn’t biased, but hey, at least the kids have more than one version of the truth and they can come to the conclusions that not everything’s so simple.
