volunteer with animals

This is Mylo and he’s Dog Guide in Training from the Lions Foundation of Canada (LFC). He is my second foster puppy and will be with me until he’s about 11-14 months old. After that he’ll go off to “Dog Guide University” to specialize in one of our six programs. At LFC we provide these dogs to those in need completely free of cost and we receive no government funding. For more information about LFC and how to donate/volunteer check out: dogguides.com/

Hey, I've respected the work of Pack West Wolfdog Rescue for a while and am honestly a bit surprised to see that you're not going to be working with them directly anymore. Can you expand on the issues with the organization itself, which you referenced previously, that led you to this decision? Thanks!

I’m very hesitant to answer this question, but yeah, I can. I’ve been torn for a while about addressing this on the blog - I don’t want to undermine a growing organization, but I do think there are some things that, in the context of an organization I hadn’t personally worked with, I would feel that people should know. Since there are a couple of things that are serious enough that I’m no longer comfortable being involved with them until they’ve been addressed, I think they need to be talked about.

These issues were either not present or not readily apparent when I started working with them, but have occurred or become noticeable in the interim. It was not until recently that I put together the individual issues I was uncomfortable with into the larger picture that led me to choose to distance myself from them. I believe I’ve voiced my observations regarding all of these issues to Pack West either in person or by chat, so these are not unknown issues.

My concerns are based on personal observation of how the facility functions during the two week-long periods I have spent at their facility and my personal online communications with them during the period between visits. My feelings on why these issues are problems stem from over a decade as a dog trainer, a degree in behavioral science, and six years of intense study of, and participation in, exotic animal management and welfare. The below is true to my knowledge as of January, 2017 - I would love to hear that things have since changed, and would happily reassess my opinion based on that.

Pack West does not, to the best of my knowledge, have any liability waivers or training protocols for volunteers to complete before having access to the animals. This is very unusual for an exotic animal rescue allowing volunteers - a quick google makes it clear that most places require volunteers to sign liability forms and go through training processes to prove they understand the behavior of the animals and can interact with them appropriately. If Pack West is allowing people to have contact with animals who are potentially dangerous - and whose rabies vaccinations don’t protect them under federal law -  I’d want to see them really think through what a volunteer program would entail and how they’d protect both the volunteers and their animals. I’d also want to see how those considerations would alter their practice of having their ambassador animals interact with the public without a signed waiver or muzzles on the animals. Accidents happen, and I worry their current practice would end in tragedy someday in the future.

Pack West does not, to the best of my knowledge, have either a professional behaviorist or anyone with professional animal training and management experience on staff or on retainer. As far as I am aware of, there is not anyone with a professional background in canid or domestic dog behavior involved with the intake of new rescues or with assessing the dynamics between cohoused animals. This also means that, when I was there, there was no established training protocol for managing the wolfdogs living on site, nor were there proactive management plans created to prepare for potential emergency handling needs. I believe this played a significant role in resource guarding and cabin fever escalating to the point of a fight between Cabal and Ivar while I was on site in January - as far as I know, they are no longer housed together as a result of the fight.

I am aware that for a new rescue professional oversight may be expensive and hard to access. I believe that, nevertheless, it should still be one of their highest priorities as it immediately impacts the welfare of their animals and the safety of their staff. To be truly comfortable engaging with them again, I would want to see the members of the facility gain personal academic or professional experience in animal behavior, management, and training if they can’t afford to hire an extant professional to consult regularly. From my first-hand experiences, this currently doesn’t seem to be a priority for them - I got the impression that hands-on experience with the specific animals was considered equally as relevant as any potential academic and professional background. I feel that rescues, as professional organizations, are obligated to go above and beyond that mythology.

Pack West does not, to the best of my knowledge, have any on-site housing for their rescue animals other than a single 750 square-foot (110 foot perimeter) outdoor enclosure. I did not observe the containment to be locked at any time during either of my visits, even when nobody was on the property, nor does it have secondary containment (which is vital when housing animals known for being escape artists) other than the surrounding yard, which has a low gate and a fence that was visibly compromised in multiple spots as of my last trip. To the best of my knowledge, this enclosure is the permanent home to two large adult male wolfdogs, and for the duration of my January visit additionally housed the resident GSD or another rescue wolfdog. As of that visit, the containment furniture was comprised of two dog houses, a tire, an above-ground pond, and an overhang - there was no indoor area for the animals to use to escape the weather, no waterproof substrate or manmade flooring that would give them an escape from moisture, and no alternate space in which the animals could get a break from each other if needed. The animals were allowed time in the larger yard on site when observed, but during my trip they still spent all of their nights and many daytime hours in the single containment. By contrast, the standards set by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (an organization considered on par with AZA for regulating rescue and sanctuary environments) for an appropriate enclosure type for multiple large canids require “a minimum of 5,000 sq. ft. (465 sq. m) for large canids housed as pairs or trios (…) and a minimum of two rooms or one indoor room and one shift yard per pair of compatible canids”.

Again, I understand that for a small rescue building more containment is expensive and hard to do. Pack West stated before they acquired Ivar (close to a year ago) that they were hoping to sell the property they are currently based on and relocate the rescue, and I think as such they have chosen to not build any new enclosures due to the resources that would be lost during the move. However, as rescue organizations take in unknown animals, I feel it’s crucial that they have multiple enclosures in which they can quarantine animals, do introductions, give residents breaks from each other, and allow incompatible animals to live separately. I don’t believe it’s responsible for a facility to not prioritize having the appropriate living quarters for the animals they take in at present, even if it means a loss of some resources down the line.

Pack West, to the best of my knowledge, has never had their facility inspected or been licensed by the USDA. I hope I’m wrong on this one, because USDA oversight is a federal requirement for any facility that exhibits animals to the public. While Pack West’s facility is not technically open to the public, they are not exempt from USDA regulation because they use their animals for photoshoots and music videos as well as promotional and fundraising campaigns for the organization. If this is true, it is a huge problem - it is the responsibility of a facility to apply for a license and be inspected before beginning to exhibit animals - and most importantly, it would mean that the facility has never been inspected to make sure that its setup is in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act. I understand that an organization that is trying move would probably prefer not to spend the money to get their current property in accordance with AWA regulations to only to sell it shortly after and start over, but federal animal welfare laws must be first priority.

I could understand a new organization struggling with maybe one of these issues, but when considered as a whole they don’t represent an ethos of animal management that I’m currently comfortable supporting - especially considering what appears to me to be avoidance of USDA oversight. I do believe in the value of what the organization is hoping to become - as places that do accurate education and outreach about wolfdogs and wolfy-looking dogs are rare - but before I’m willing to publicly support them again, these issues really need to be addressed.

I’m really scared to post this, because I know it may be interpreted as a betrayal of my previous friendly relationship with the facility, but it is the same due diligence I would give to any other facility when asked about why I would not personally support it.

Have you ever thought about getting a group of volunteers to help you with animating I understand how long animation takes a while why not take the weight of your self

No.

First it’d be impossible to find someone with the same style as me.

This is my project and I work on it 7 hours a day everyday, I doubt someone who didn’t create the series would have the same love or passion for this as I do.

And I want the animation to be 100% mine. that way I’ll learn faster

TLC High School head canon/AU

Not your normal high school AU, but rather the Rampion Crew as high school teachers

Cinder- The shop/mechanics teacher. Has a crush on the cute principal, but doesn’t act on it because she’s thinks it’s unprofessional (but really she’s too scared to make a move).

Kai- The Principal of Commonwealth High and he has a pretty big crush on the shop teacher. Very afraid of the principal over at Lunar Academy.

Scarlet- The botany teacher, often seen with the hulking PE teacher. After school she also coaches the women’s judo team (and they kick ass every year)

Wolf/Ze’ev- The physical education teacher. Coaches football during the fall and wrestling in the winter. Likes to eat from the botany teacher’s garden (especially the tomatoes).

Cress- The shy computer teacher who also volunteers as the school’s IT person. Programs the handsome econ teacher’s computer to randomly break down, so she can come and fix it for him. Vocal director for the Spring musical.

Thorne- The econ teacher. He often teaches his students how supply and demand works (his favorite example is with soap and spaceships). Stops by the shop frequently to visit his best friend, but takes the long way so he can walk past the computer lab.

Winter- The psychology teacher who is also volunteer coordinator. She often brings animals to work with her to soothe her frequent panic attacks. Visits the school nurse very regularly.

Jacin- The Health/anatomy teacher as well as the school nurse. Very sullen except when his favorite patient comes to visit (and when the IT girl comes to fix the computers). Head of security for the Spring musical.

Iko- The ecstatic art/drama teacher who always visits the shop and the main office (to get the scoop on the cute principal for her best friend). Director and head of make-up/costumes for the Spring musical.

BONUS:

Levana- The evil principal at Lunar Academy who is trying to take over the position of superintendent of the entire school district.

Scott McCall:

With Scott being your older brother by two years and also being an alpha of his own pack, he did become overprotective and by over protective I mean, well that’s go back to the day shall we.

You was running late for school because you idiot older brother woke up late, meaning you woke up late also, so that meaning you had hardly any time to even pick out a decent outfit to wear. Rushing down the stairs in a pair of black Nike running shorts and a white tank top and to say Scott was not pleased at what you was wearing. Who could blame you, you had no time and needed to get to school.

“What are you wearing?” Scott’s voice makes you freeze in your walk as you step out of the kitchen with a piece of burnt toast dangling from your mouth. You quirk your eyebrows up at him to ask what he meant before a small growl fell from his lips, canines appearing as he gestured towards your lack of clothing.

“Clothes” you helplessly mumbled around your piece of toast, which caused it to fall on the floor. You pout as you stare down at your still burnt piece of toast that lays on the floor before lifting your head back up to meet glowing red eyes. “Scott” you whispers stepping back just a little, it’s not that your afraid of him nor the werewolf he is, it’s just you think it’s a little stupid he’s going all big alpha and brother protective about what your wearing.

“Change” he tells you in that deep voice to show that he wolf is coming out. You look at Scott for a second before slowly giving him a smile and giggle at the same time. You knew this would confuse Scott by when he gives you the helpless puppy look.

“Oh Scott when are you going to learn that I am 16 years old and can wear whatever I like.”

Scott says nothing but grumbles under his breath causing you to tilt your head to the side.

“Ya know I don’t have super hearing like you genius” you whisper as you take your first step back towards the mumbling alpha. “So what was that?” You ask him.

“I don’t want people to look at your legs, o-or your lady area.” He mumbles with a small pout on his lips, his arms now crossed over his chest and his head hung down. “You’re my little sister” and with him saying that you fully step forward and pull your overprotective brother into your arms and hug him.

“Would putting on a jumper help” Scott nods on your shoulder to say yes. Doing as you asked you leave Scott and retreat back upstairs and moments later come back down with one of Scott’s jumpers covering most of your and stopping mid thigh. “Now let’s go we are already late as it is, and mum is most likely going to get a call any moment to ask why we aren’t in school.” Within saying that Scott nods his head before leading you both out of your house and to his bike, where you hop on behind and speed to school.

Stiles Stilinski:

Now being the only daughter of the sheriff of Beacon Hills is one thing, but being daughter of the sheriff and the twin sister of none other than Stiles Stilinski is another. You loved Stiles to bits, of course you did he was your best friend and vice versa for him (besides Scott) but when Theo would flirt with you and you let him, well Stiles absolutely hated it and would go all big brother protective mode over you. With him still not trusting Theo one bit since he came back to Beacon Hills and finding out that he is also a chimera Stiles protectiveness over you got a lot worse than it originally was.

He would follow you everywhere and by everywhere I mean everywhere. From one class to another until your seated inside and if Theo was in your class he’d make sure he was far from you, and if Stiles himself was in the same class as you he would sit next to you and also become you working partner is well, Stiles also followed you around on you morning break and lunch break, he would also follow you to Deaton’s Veteran where you volunteered to help with the animals and even make Derek watch over as you volunteered if Stiles could not be there himself.

If you went to the library to do homework and he would hide behind bookshelves or even sit next to you to make sure Theo couldn’t go near you, and don’t start with needing to go to your locker he would be right by your side, and last of them all if you needed to go to the bathroom or toilet at home or in school, Stiles would figure it out where you are and wait outside for you, I mean come on Stiles a girl needs privacy.

So you finally had enough off your brother basically hovering over your life. It was lunch time now and you had the same lunch as the others so you thought it was time you told Stiles how you felt about him following you around like a lost dog. When you sat down at the table you sat between Liam and Mason, when normally you would sit in between Scott and Stiles without having a choice.

“You need to stop” you hiss at Stiles not caring if the others at the table heard, which most likely most them would with them being a were something. “You need to stop this stupid act right now Stiles” you say with a guarded look. Stiles looks at you shocked at first but the smile on his face soon drops off and a scowl is now placed.

“I’m protecting you” he hisses back. “You cannot trust him” Stiles tries to whisper but it was mostly a whisper type yell towards you. “He isn’t to be trusted Y/N.”

“Trusted, the only person here that shouldn’t be trusted is you Void Stiles” You whisper yell back but soon regretting what you said. “Stiles, I-” but he doesn’t let you finish when he sends you a harsh glare he’s never given you before and actually stomps out of the cafeteria. “I didn’t mean it” you whisper to yourself but everyone heard. You knew that Void Stiles was hard subject of the past for Stiles and you go and use it against him. What type of sister was you. Ignoring whatever Scott was saying you neglect your food and follow after Stiles, but not having to go far when you see him sitting on the floor against a blue locker in the empty hallway, with his head in his hands. “Stiles” you whisper as you slowly walk towards him.

“I know I get a little overpowering with all this following you around and hovering all over you, it-it’s just I made mum and dad a promise I would always protect you Y/N. I’m afraid to lose my best friend.” You hear him whisper and your heart cracks into a millions pieces right then and there. You’ve never heard Stiles sound so hurt and broken about you before and that makes you feel like a right dick and very guilty one about what you had said.

“You shouldn’t let Scott hear that I’m your best friend” you say trying to make the situation better than it is right now, and when you see a smile gracing Stiles lips when he lifts his head up, you know your all forgiven for. So what do you do, you sit down right beside him and talk about utter rubbish, laugh and cry a little until the bell rings showing it’s the end of lunch. You both leave each other for your next classes with promises given to each other. Your promise was to never bring up the past of Void Stiles again, and Stiles was to give you a little more space, to be less protective and to live your life just a little bit without him hovering over it.
Liam Dunbar:

Liam always loved being overprotective over you even know you’re a few years older than him. So when you came out that you and Derek Hale was an item, Liam got all protective over you. As soon as the news hit everyone and Liam himself his eyes instantly glowed a yellow amber, his canines started to extend and his claws soon appeared.

“Liam calm down” his own alpha said but it didn’t work when Liam growled loudly. Before we know it Liam lunged at Derek but soon stop when you stood in front of your love, blocking him from Liam’s attack. A squeal falls from your mouth when he just manages to stop but still knocks you down on accident causing Derek to fall with you. Before you even could hit the ground Derek’s arms cushion around you, holding you tight and safe for the fall.

You and Derek hit the ground in a thud both landing on one another because you are softly pushed of Derek and onto the ground beside him and in matter of seconds he’s on his feet and ready to pounce at your younger brother. Both eyes glowing, canines sharp with growls falling from behind them and claws extended and ready to attack and have blood on them show for the fight there both wanting to have.

You scramble to your feet and scream with all the energy you have in you with hope that the boys will stop and they do, Liam and Derek turn to face you with their eyes still glowing, claws still extended and canines still sharp as ever. “Stop, now” you angrily say to the both of them. “Liam I’m pregnant and I am your older sister so you will stop this silly over protective act, right now!” You shout at him.

“P-pregnant!” Liam stutters out in shock and disbelief. “As in baby pregnant."

You giggle at him first before you answer. "Yes Liam, as in nine months baby pregnant. I know you can get very protective of me but please, please stop this silly act. I love Derek and I love you because you’re my younger brother but I have Derek now."

"You will always have me” he growls out causing Derek to growl back him. “I am your blood."

"And so is Derek now, please I need my little brother to the best uncle ever to this little girl or boy Liam, I need you” you whisper in the softest and quietest tone ever and surprising yourself if anyone even heard you speak.

“I’ll be the best uncle ever, congratulation Y/N, Derek” you smile at Liam and embrace him in the hug when you get close enough to him. Everyone around celebrates you and Derek in congratulations and a lot of baby talk, so for the rest of the day you explain to the pack about how you and Derek started and where it went from there.

Theo Raeken:

You knew about Theo working with the Dread Doctors and his punishment was being taken down to Hell by your dead older sister dragging him down after Kira basically stabbed the ground and made a hole in the ground for her to take him. That killed you knowing the only person you actually had left was now gone and it made you distance yourself from the pack, until around three months later where the Ghost Riders started to come in and took Stiles whom you still remember clearly but the others didn’t.

So on one of the days where there was a storm coming and the Ghost Riders will come and take new people who seen them, Liam and Hayden took you back to the tunnels where Theo first went into Hell and made you wait with them. Somehow they manage to get in touch with Noshiko Yukimura and got Kira’s sword is well.

“What are we doing Liam.” You ask him with a small voice as you rub your arms for some heat to enter your body, because well you wasn’t anything of a supernatural creature, you was a good ole human being.

Liam doesn’t answer you but lift’s Kira’s sword into the air and stabbing in very harshly into the ground causing it to crack up and make a big enough hole for someone to crawl out of. Claws soon stick out of the hole and a very dirty body soon following afterwards with glowing amber eyes on show. There stood Theo, there stood your older brother dirty and angry and ready to attack.

“Theo” you whisper softly making his amber eyes snap towards you in the corner where you stood and soon disappear when they land on you, his little sister, the little girl he grew up with protecting and raising, the little sister he thought he never see again.

“Y/N” Theo whispers your name and before you know it your in his arms not caring that your getting dirty, because all that matters is you finally have your big brother back. You was so happy when you wasn’t the only one who remembered Stiles and everything about him. But when Scott and Malia found out Theo was back it wasn’t good, at all.

“You brought him back” Malia growled out staring down Theo. “I bet she was the one who brought him back” and this time the growl like voice was directed at you which caused you to snap your eyes up from the floor and to the glowing blue eyes that’s glares at you. You only stand frozen when she slowly advances you but soon stops when a fierce and loud growl of your brother showing protection for his blood.

“Step any closer to my sister and I will kill you myself, Malia” Theo growls out deeply, and next thing you know they are both fighting with Scott and Liam trying to tear them apart, yourself standing in the corner scared for your brother and your friend and Lydia shouting at you to make it stop.

“Theo” you whimper but he obviously didn’t hear it. “Theo” you say this time but a lot louder. “THEO!” You scream and it causes him to stop and look over at you, making him lose guard and it lets Malia throw in a quick punch. “Please stop, the both of you” and just with one glance at the fear and helpless look in your eyes Theo calms down, he glowing eyes slowly disappearing along with his claws and canines along with it. Malia soon follows after Theo with calming down when she see that her friend has fear in her eyes.

“Y/N I’m sorry” Malia says.

“I’m sorry.” Theo says at the same time and all you do is nod your head. Theo holds his arm out to you and you take, instantly pulling you into a hug a inhaling your familiar scent and calming down more. “I’m sorry” he whispers into your hair.

And after that you, Theo and the pack start to make a plan on how to get rid of the Ghost Riders and how to get Stiles back, even know it took a lot of convincing of Theo and yourself that Stiles was a real person and not just imagination.

Brett Talbot:

Brett has always been protective over you and Lori because well you both are his little sisters, he was always a tad bit more protective over you because only Lori and Brett himself got the werewolf gene and you didn’t, so you were the human of the family. So when Brett had found out that you’ve been sneaking out to meet your long term secret boyfriend Liam, his ex best friend he was not happy, and when he also found out from Scott himself that the Dread Doctors are wanting you to become the next Chimera for Theo’s pack, well just say he went all hell bent on trying to kill Theo and the Dread Doctors.

That only ended up with him being constantly injured trying to fight them all, along side with the McCall pack. So wherever you went Brett followed, you understood why he was trying to protect you but you didn’t understand why he needed to follow you when you was with Liam, he was a werewolf and a pretty good one is well.

“Brett” you hiss at your annoying brother who is standing a few feet away from you and Liam, because well he has been following the two of you for the past ten minutes. You turn around and lose the hold Liam had on your waist and stare down at your brother, who grins sheepishly at you. “Stop following us.”

“I’m not following you” he simply replies knowing that it is very much annoying you, even annoying Liam a little is well.

You scoff at his answer with arms folded over your chest, hip stuck out and a frown on your lips. “Never mind it’s not following, it’s stalking” you ground out between your clenched teeth. Brett grins again before sending one of his signature smirks at you and Liam, but it mostly being directed at you to annoy just a little bit more.

“I’m protecting you Y/N, so stop complaining. I need to keep you safe and close so the Dread Doctors do not get you and turn you into one of their experiments.” Brett angrily says between a growl and clenched teeth. “I can’t lose you” you just barely hear him with your stupid human hearing.

“You won’t, I’m going to protect her with everything in me. Even if it kills me, she has the pack behind her alongside you and even Satomi’s pack is right behind you to keep her safe.” Liam butts in and it causes your heart to flutter at the words he said.

‘I’m going to protect her with everything in me. Even if it kills me’ runs through your mind before you snap out of it and focus on the conversation.

“She and Lori are the only family I have left, I’m not going to lose either one of them.” And your heart flutters and swoons again at Brett’s words.

Stepping forward towards Brett you smile softly at him before beginning to speak in a quiet whisper, but he could still hear you with his super hearing. “You are never going to lose me, nor Lori. I promise.”

Brett stays quiet for a second before he begins to speak up. “When mum and dad died I made a promise to myself that I would raise and protect you the two of you from anyone who’s try to get in the way, but I promised myself that I would protect you a little more because the lack of the gene in you. I need to keep you and Lori safe Y/N, and I’m going to do anything to keep the promise I made.” And within a second your in your big brothers arms hugging him tight and whispering how much you love him and how much it means to you that he’s there for you.

By the end of the night you, Liam and Brett headed over to Scott’s house to pig out to a movie with the pack  and with yourself falling asleep wedged between your boyfriend and big brother.

9 Things You Didn’t Know About Bolt

1. Animators brought a giant inflatable hamster ball to the studio.

To relieve stress and get inside the mind of Rhino, the animators rolled up and down the halls in it for fun.

2. Mittens’ voice is actually Susie Essman’s normal speaking voice.

After Susie Essman was cast in the role of Mittens, the directors loved her normal speaking voice so much, that they requested that she use it instead of creating a unique tone for the character.

3. The animators took inspiration from Michael Bay for the film’s Bolt TV show.

When John Lasseter gave the animators the challenge to create a Bolt TV show that would be exciting enough for network television, they looked to Michael Bay’s action films for inspiration. As a result, they relied on deep blacks and bright colors, which served as a nice contrast to the much softer textures and colors seen in the real world.

4. The crew adopted a hamster to help them animate Rhino.

While John Lasseter’s pet chinchilla served as inspiration for Rhino’s design, the crew adopted a hamster and studied his movement on a sheet of plexiglass to get a better idea of how Rhino would walk in his plastic ball. They named him Doink.

5. The voice actors behind Mittens and Bolt never actually met.

Despite having many shared scenes, actors Susie Essman (Mittens) and John Travolta (Bolt) never recorded together.

6. When the directors gave Mark Walton the role of Rhino, they caught his reaction on tape.

Typically, before bringing the talent into the studio, a film’s animators volunteer to record a practice run of the script. When animator Mark Walton came in and read for Rhino the hamster, the directors liked his performance so much that they cast him in the role. But before telling him, they had him come in for one more reading and slipped the line, “I am the voice of Rhino” into the script. They had a camera set up to catch his surprised reaction.

7. Real locations were used as inspiration for the film’s lighting.

To nail the natural difference in lighting between several of the film’s diverse locations, the crew went to LA, an Ohio trailer park, the streets of New York, the San Francisco docks, and the desert surrounding Las Vegas to take photographs—which they later used as reference during production. In fact, the hotels and casinos shown in the Las Vegas scenes actually exist.

8. The film’s art style was inspired by the work of Edward Hopper.

Instead of going full CG, the animators opted for a softer approach, using the paintings of Edward Hopper as inspiration. They found a way to recreate brushstrokes in the computer and used that method to set the film’s 3D objects against a 2D backdrop.

9. Bolt’s look is based on a breed of White German Shepherd.

Though Bolt’s breed was never defined in the film, the main character animator, Joe Moshier, has indicated that the wonder dog is loosely based on a White German Shepherd puppy that the team studied during production; his huge ears, and bushy tail are dead giveaways.

-MUSIC (I really enjoy Seether and Breaking Benjamin, as well as TONS of artists in that same genre, like Fuel, Staind, Puddle of Mudd, etc.)

Preferences: I’m looking for someone who would like to make a new friendship. I hope to find someone a little older to talk to, between the ages of 20 and 28. Male or female, preferably located in the United States of America as well.

i love animals i can’t even describe like meeting that deer made my DAY no like my month my YEAR idk

just every time i connect with an animal like that im always reassured that yeah this is what im supposed to do with my life (help animals)

What they didn’t tell you

Animal rights activists think those of us who do not agree with them just need some education. And by that they mean we should watch propaganda videos and read literature produced by organisations who stand to make profits from donations received by people they suck in with their sad animal stories. It is a good marketing ploy, I mean, what heartless person wouldn’t want to help a poor, sick, abused animal in need?? But please don’t get sucked into their trap. I actually volunteer MOST of my time to helping animals in need and I grew up on a farm. My whole family is still in the agribusiness and I’m going to be a vet. I’m currently studying animal science at university and vet nursing at a vet clinic. I don’t need to watch your stupid video. Maybe you should go to a farm. Talk to a vet. Volunteer at an animal shelter. Actually teach yourself something.

Don’t just watch a clip of some really sick pigs sitting in a pen and tell me not to eat bacon. What they didn’t tell you is that those pigs were just visited by a vet and are in that pen for quarantine reasons.

Don’t watch a clip of some bald hens and tell me not to eat eggs. What they didn’t tell you is that the so-called activists broke into the barn, pulled out the hens feathers and then switched the cameras on.

Don’t watch or share these videos if you weren’t there to see what happened before and after filming. You know people make a lot of money out of editing films right? And no, I wasn’t referring to the entertainment industry.

Also, when a farm is shut down because propaganda videos destroy a small, family business, those animals are not saved. They are killed. They are still sold onto another farm or to an abattoir. Shutting down farms does not save animals. If there is no money to be made from them, they still get killed. Don’t believe me? Just check the animal shelters in your area. Dogs and cats get killed by the tonne because there are too many of them. The supply outweighs the demand. If there aren’t enough people out there saving puppies and kittens, you can bet there will be even less people putting their hands up to save farm animals. Not that I believe people should adopt any animal just to save it from euthanasia, but I’m off topic.

Hey, I’m a small girl from a small town in the north west. My personality type is INTP-T. I go to army cadets. I like to read and nap sometimes and I volunteer at a library. I’m pretty good at maths and don’t mind a good rant about anything.
I’ll be starting college soon. I like animals and Supernatural and some Netflix shows.

Preferences: Preferably around the same age (15-19). No racists, sexists etc.

Most vet students I talk to tell me that the majority of their classmates are NOT straight from undergrad and did NOT get in on their first try. They said most people were accepted on their 2nd, 3rd, etc. application, and people accepted on their first try is the minority.

They also say not everyone is 22… there are people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s.

So don’t feel bad if you don’t get in your first try!

———–

I was rejected by 6 US schools my first try without even getting interviews invitations. And this is after working my butt off in undergraduate school for 5 years and accumulating several thousand hours of volunteer/employment work with animals over the past 10 years. In addition to spending 3-4 months working on my application essays and VMCAS application.

The application which cost me over a thousand dollars. VMCAS application fees ($195 for the first school, $100 for each additional), plus individual school supplemental application fees (varies - but in my experience was $50-100 per school), plus sending official transcripts/exam scores ($9 per school I applied to for transcript and $30 per school I applied to for GRE scores), plus paying to take the GRE Exam ($200).

Plus flying out and staying into hotels for interviews if you’re lucky enough to get one. It’s extremely frustrating.

You can easily spend $4000 on VMCAS if you decided to apply to every AVMA accredited vet school in desperate attempt to increase your chances of being accepted.

There are 30 US AVMA-accredited veterinary schools and 18 additional international AVMA-accredited veterinary schools. Please compare that to the 179 human medical schools in the US alone.

———

(Which is why after my rejection I decided not to wait another year to apply, resulting in another 2 years before starting vet school, and spending another thousand dollars on the VMCAS application – instead applying to Ross University to start this September - just waiting to hear back!)

Everyone on the team seemed to have the same opinion, that Bucky needed to do some volunteer work. Bucky had nothing against the idea, but it wasn’t like people were jumping at the chance to let the Winter Soldier into their business.

“I know someone,” Sam had said, he assured Bucky that this place wouldn’t care about his rep, that he would be accepted as long as he respected the place and the person running it, which should be no problem for him. But as he approached the building, he grew more and more nervous.

Big Lessons From Finding Dory

So I saw Finding Dory tonight and let me just highlight a few things that are very important that were shown in the movie but may have gone over other’s heads (none of these are spoilers, really but im tagging them anyways):

1. Not all marine life institutions are like SeaWorld. This film demonstrates there are a lot of really helpful marine life institutions out there who are dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of animals. It takes place in California and although they never directly call it the Monterey Bay Aquarium you can tell that is what it is based off of. Many aquariums like the one in Monterey and a local aquarium by me are completely dedicated to the rehabilitation of marine life/mammals and yes, they tag some animals, but it is just to track their migration patterns and conduct research. SeaWorld has given such a bad name to other marine life centers out there and to be honest, these centers are the kind of organizations we need to preserve our marine life. Most operate on a vast network of volunteers and they could really use your donations–especially when it is apparent that our government does not care about our waters to make any laws protecting it.

2. PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE FINAL SCENE. (The one where Dory says the view before her is “unforgettable”). If you’ve seen the movie, you might have noticed something….well missing. In fact, a lot was missing. Much of the coral reef in this scene as they pan out has become discolored and is dead. Pixar clearly wanted to draw your eye to this scene. Our coral reefs are dramatically dying and if we don’t stop to care for them now, they can be gone easily in a lifetime–as little as 15 years. Those beautiful views will become forgettable if we do not do something about them now. Back when Finding Nemo came out 12 years ago, scientists were just starting to notice the dramatic changes in iur coral reefs. Now if you see recent pictures of the Sydney Harbor, the same one featured in FN, most of those beautiful colorful corl reefs are dead and gone. Although Finding Dory is supposed to take place one year after Finding Nemo, Pixar was really trying to bring that important message out.

So please, keep in mind as you spend money towards a movie ticket, maybe next time use that money and donate to ocean conservation funds. We really do only get one world, and she takes care of us so we should take care of her.

(1/2) Weird animal ethics question here. Recently, the shelter where I volunteer has been handling animals from a neglect case in which two guinea pigs were allowed to breed uncontrolled. There are now 250+ animals, all of which would be the result of repeated parent/child and sibling incest. The original pair presumably come from the genetic pool of guinea pigs bred in pet mills, and probably have iffy genetic health to start with. The plan is for these animals to eventually be rehomed as pets.

(2/2) My question is, at what point is the degree of inbreeding and risk of genetic illness so great that it would be more humane to euthanize the animals? How would you determine where that point falls, given these animals with unknown genetic history? (q tax: came for the weird animal stories, stayed for the interesting info and thoughtful discussions)

So you’re talking about approximately 250 animals that might have significant genetic weaknesses.

And your options are either:

  • Desex and rehome them as pets
  • Euthanise them now

You are basically weighing up, right now, giving these animals a chance at life, or certain death. There is a large unknown factor with these animals too, namely how genetically different the original pairs were.

There is a chance that these guinea pigs will be perfectly fine as pets. Personally I would make the call that if these animals look healthy right now, and homes can be found that will accept the risk of their past circumstances, then why not give them a chance? If they become ill in the future, you can always consider euthanasia then. If people are willing to give them a nice life in the meantime, and they’re prevented from breeding, then why not?

So if they show signs of illness now I would address it, but if they’re not showing signs I would treat them as any other animal coming through the shelter.

Consider their current status, rather than their future possible states.
