volcanic terrain

Volcanic Terrain

The user covers the ground under everyone’s feet with lava for five turns. The Pokemon on the ground are burned.

Volcanic Terrain creates terrain that envelops the field and replaces the background environment and any other terrain that is already in effect. The terrain fades after five turns. This terrain has the following effects on Pokémon that are on the ground and not in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move:

  • Causes all Pokemon to be burned. Volcanic Terrain will not affect a target with the Abilities Water Veil, or a Fire-Type Pokemon.
  • It halves the damage taken from Water type moves by affected Pokémon (regardless of whether the user of the move is affected).

If Volcanic Terrain is in effect, Nature Power becomes Flamethrower, Secret Power uses the animation of Ember and may inflict a burn, and Camouflage causes the user to become Fire-type. Natural objects disappear and cannot be destroyed while Volcanic Terrain is in effect.

The Volcano Erta Ale in Ethiopia is a crater sitting in the East African Rift Zone. This crater has regularly hosted a lava lake, but for the past few months it has been sending out long lava flows. Earlier this week those lava flows left the slopes of the volcanic terrain and entered the surrounding sedimentary rocks for the first time in years.

This is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand. Most of the world would know it as Mordor and Mt Doom. It is a day hike across volcanic terrain, and has everything: huge volcanoes, scattered craters, steaming vents, crystal pools, and old lava flows. It is one of those things in life you just gotta do sometime. I had a great time with my family, it is just amazing to be out there and experiencing a land from another time.
