Obsidian’s backstory part 2/8

After many many tests, Obsidian was scored with a 89/100 in the categories that made her what she was suppose to be. She was tested in power, speed, stamina, body structure, weight, and personality. She was never told her score, nor what she got wrong, so to her, she passed seeing as the alternative was to be shattered. She was then put to work on her designed purpose. Clean up work. She disposed of shattered gems, late or early produced Quartz gems from the Kindergartens, and occasionally carried out executions. She spend most her days in her quarters under the main levels, accompanied by shards and large pits of lava. She did this for 40 years straight while new Obsidian’s were in production, trained to not express emotion while she watched Rubies, Pearls, Jaspers, Agates, Peridots, Kunzites, and any many other of her fellow gems burn and melt away in the molten heat

Thousands of years past, Obsidian had made many friends in Yellow Diamond’s empire, the Golden Sapphires, a few aristocratic Orthoclases, Beryls, and a single Topaz. Topaz Warriors were not very friendly, and it took a long time before the Topaz that often guarded her finally warmed up to her. But the gems she got a long with most were Pearl’s. Yellow Diamond’s Pearl did not care much for Obsidian, but during her breaks she would go visit the pearls around the empire. She enjoyed them a lot, and her love circulated through to Yellow Diamond. She was rewarded a Pearl for her hard work over the 2,000 years she’s been here. She was extremely small, she was a commoners Pearl which was much less fancy and expensive to make. But obsidian loved her. She never treated her like a Pearl, she treated her as if she were above her. She let her go out and explore Yellow Diamond’s agglomeration of planets she had successfully made into a working recourse facility. Because of all these rewards and lenient rules, Obsidian respected her new Diamond. She wanted to prove herself to her Diamond and fight for her honor on the new planet the Crystal Gems are trying to defend. However, little did Obsidian know that Yellow and Blue Diamond have been coordinating another trade. A new and improved set of Obsidian’s for more territory. Obsidian came to her Diamond and pleaded to be by the Quartz warriors to fight for her. Seeing as Yellow Diamond was getting new Obsidian’s anyway, she had no use for her anymore. She consulted with a Golden Sapphire. This was one of the Sapphires she had befriended before. She felt horribly for Obsidian, foreseeing that all her futures except one were of her not returning. She told her Diamond that she would not return, praying that the one percent of her returning would be in her favor. Yellow Diamond approved Obsidian’s request to go and fight. Obsidian spent her last months working on her battle tactics, but mostly spending time with her loved ones, mostly her beloved Pearl. The day came, and she set off on the 1st battalion ship to clear in the front lines. The ships landed and the battle begun. It was horrible, worse than anything Obsidian could have imagined. She would do anything for her Diamond, but this was too much. All around her, gems were shattered and fighting for their lives. Being in the front lines, she watched many of the Quartz warriors around her perish very quickly. So she ran. She ran far away through the battlefield without her weapon drawn. She thought of her life back on Homeworld, how she might never see her comrades again, how she might not see her Pearl again. For a split moment, she wasn’t paying attention and was shot and poofed by one of the many in the Crystal Gem armada. Her gem laid in the dirt, warriors of both sides stepping on her gem and digging it deeper and deeper into the dirt until she was completely covered, unable to reform.

400 years of strenuous work had passed very slowly for the lonely gem. She had never met another gem outside the Dumortierite guards that would come in every 2 months or so, or if the Diamonds called for it. But obsidian knew that if she attempted to reach out to these gems, she would be shattered for showing emotion. Her wish for company was soon granted, but they were not what she was looking for. More Obsidian’s came into her quarters, taking over her job without even a sideways glance. These Obsidian’s were taller, darker, sleeker, much stronger and smarter. Everything she could’ve been, these gems were. She was then escorted to much smaller chamber with a single lava pit and told to watch for any reformers that may crawl out. There she sat in wait, staring into the molten rock for years and years. Only once had a gem try to escape in the years she spent down there. But it didn’t get far. A poor Rose Quartz attempting to crawl out of the fire, burnt and broken until she finally sunk back down and molten heat with the remaining other failures. This traumatized her beyond imagine. She didn’t want this life anymore. She wanted to express herself, and she knew just how to do that.

Over 12,000 years ago, Homeworld was still expanding. Having recently discovered Earth, their production of gems began to increase. The Diamonds had ideas for new gems, but before they could start pumping them out at a high production rate, they had to make one successful one first. Dig a hole 100 feet deep, fill it with lava, add the ingredients and let it sit for 1000 years and out pops Obsidian. She was the first to be born of her breed. Having cooked for 40 years and emerged from the kindergarten, confused, and alone. Under the supreme reign of Blue Diamond, Obsidian was taken to be properly studied, trained, and assigned to her born function.
