Rowan Blanchard On Confronting Biases in Friends
  • Teen Vogue: How do you confront a racist or sexist bias with a friend, instead of just not doing it to avoid conflict? What's your advice on confronting biases you find in other people?
  • Rowan Blanchard: I totally understand that feeling of somebody saying something and you not wanting to upset that person further. Recently, I had a friend who said something along the lines of "I don't want to drive by the hood today," or something. It's that weird moment where you're like "Wait, am I really friends with this person? Should I be doing this?" But I think, when something like that happens, you can just say, "Hey, what do you mean by that?"
  • Because then the person might realize the thing they just said was not acceptable and I think people kind of respond to that. When they get a quick response that's like, "What do you mean by that? Can you just elaborate on what you were trying to say?" I’ve found the person will usually not be able to come up with a response because they realize how racist or sexist the thing that they're trying to actually initiate is.
  • The other thing that I try to do [to educate] inadvertently with friends or family members [is by saying], "Well, let's go see this movie instead of this movie,” with me knowing that the movie is more [education] about the topic that I'm trying to educate that person on.
  • I feel like that's how I use my social media; I'll post if I see a film that I really want people to see, and that's my way of suddenly putting that into their head.

- What are your 3 most attractive aspects/features?

GY - Comforty level, eyes, honesty.

- Body?

GY - “No, absolutely not. I believe a good physique (or having a good body) is not an attraction.”

- What are the three things that make you angry?

GY - People who blame others (irresponsible), people who have pride, people who assume or know everything, people who act as if they have everything (those kind of people have an empty heart, and people who don’t care or can’t catch on).

- What three secrets do you have that you only know?

GY - When I talk one of my eyebrows rise, when i feel like i’m in an awkward position while taking a picture i close my eyes (or blink) on purpose i scratch my butt when i sleep.

- What are the three most important values in life?

GY - Myself, my parents, and the people that i love. Work is definitely last because there is so much more than work in life.

Rowan Blanchard and Gia Coppola on 'Teenagers and Adolescence'
  • RB: I notice a theme of adolescence in your work, that kind of foreverness and longing that teens experience. What draws you to that?
  • GC: James [Franco] always said it well: Teenagers are really good vessels to articulate emotions. They feel things in such heavy ways and they wear their hearts on their sleeves.
  • RB: Everything’s so raw.
  • GC: Maybe I like these stories because I still feel like a teenager.
  • RB: Being a teenager is both awful and wonderful at the same time.

Vogue Girl Korea Interview with Kiko Mizuhara

We went to meet Mizuhara Kiko in Tokyo personally. After our meeting, we became a fan of the kind, pretty and professional Kiko.

V.G:Hi, Kiko. We were really looking forward to meeting you. You seem like everyone’s ideal girl nowadays.

MK: Oh, really? Thank you. I’m not young anymore but I still feel young at heart. I’m 26 this year*. Even as many years go by, the things I feel remain unchanged.

V.G: What kind of a girl were you when you were little?

MK: I think I was really spirited and energetic. Since I was young, I had a lot of interest in fashion. My mom was an English teacher and the house was always crazy when people came over for lessons. Because of that, the front door was always filled with various kinds of high heeled shoes. When they were having lessons, I would try on the shoes one by one and I was the kid that put on my mother’s lipstick secretly. Whenever my mother or anyone else told me to wear something, I didn’t. I would put up a strong argument and only wore what I picked out myself.

V.G: Is what you are wearing today, ‘Kiko Style’?

MK: No, it was a little colder than I thought it would be so I bundled myself up more than usual. My black skinnies are from Moschino, Unicorn hoodie from Opening Ceremony, and my jumper is vintage Moschino.

V.G: What direction do you think style will head towards in the coming Spring?

MK: 70’s fashion is a big trend this season; I wish to give it a try too. I’d like to try pairing miniskirts and shorts with knee high boots in a stylish way.

V.G: Who is your biggest muse?

MK: Chloë Sevigny! She follows her own style and it’s amazing how she can carry it off so well. Whatever she wears turns into Chloë Sevigny-style. I wish to be like that too.

V.G: Is there any other item that catches your eye?

MK: I would say high waist shorts and miniskirts, as well as mini bags.

V.G: What do you wear when you want to look your best?

MK: A magical item that makes my legs look longer, so high waist pants. I bought Celine’s high waist pants from this season but I’m still deciding when to wear it. I’m not very tall but it’s a good item that compliments my body type

V.G: What is Kiko’s ‘Beauty Bible’?

MK: Actually, I’ve almost never had to stress over my skin. Just eat well and have good thoughts. I always carry red lipstick in my bag. It brings out my white skin more.

V.G: What is the first thing you do when you wake up?

MK: I turn off my alarm and drink a glass of water.

V.G: How about right before you sleep?

MK: Most of the time I read a book until I fall asleep.

V.G: What kind of books do you enjoy reading?

MK: Recently I’ve been reading “Happiness: 21 things about life I learnt from Dolphins” by Ohara Yasuhisa. There’s a lot about life that can be learnt from spending time with dolphins. I had a really good time reading this.

V.G: What kind of music do you listen to?

M.K: I like music from the old days. Music is a really intimate part of my life. Recently I’m listening to “Super Water” by Cibo Matto, “Deeper and Deeper” by Madonna, “The Boss” by The Braxtons, “Elastic Heart” by Sia, and “At Your Best” by Frank Ocean.

V.G: Looking at your Instagram, you often use a film camera to take pictures of your friends and younger sister. It gives off a really natural ‘next-door-girl’ kind of feeling. Do you have any other hobbies?

MK: It’s not something that I do on a daily basis; I don’t have many rest days so that’s quite hopeless. To be honest, I would like to go to a dance studio. At present, my hobby is travelling. Going somewhere with my friends; that’s natural healing for me.

V.G: Out of all the places you’ve travelled to, which is your favourite? We really liked the photos of you in Venice.

MK: I like all the places I’ve been to. My most recent trip was to Beijing. I’ve been there in the past but it wasn’t a big thing for me. This time, it was a complete different feeling. The food there was really good too. I like places with good food.

V.G: You’re known to be a ‘work of God’ when you have bobbed short hair. Do you have any plans on cutting it?

MK: It was a hairstyle similar to a movie’s lead actress that my ex-boyfriend really liked. I wanted to look good to him so I cut it then.

V.G: You’re exactly like we had imagined you to be. You’re beyond gorgeous, cute, with a pure and innocent image, sometimes you’re funky and sexy too. In your opinion, which image do you like the best?

MK: Since I’m a model, there are various concepts I do during photoshoots. <Union> magazine’s shoot required me to show a natural image, a casual look that’s similar to the real me. However, I wish to try a look that I’ve never done before. I feel that it would bring me joy while shooting.

V.G: Kiko, your Korean is really good! (Our conversation was 80% exchanged in Korean)

MK: I studied Korean for 5 years. My mom is a Korean resident in Japan but her Korean isn’t very good. I really like Korean and wanted to learn it so I studied hard. It was difficult but fun and I wish to become better. It would be good if I could understand more of the language.

V.G: Do you come to Korea often?

MK: I do. I really like Korean food, especially grilled intestines (gopchang) and oxtail soup (seolleongtang).

VG: Where do you mainly go (in Korea)?

MK: I go to Itaewon, it feels comfortable. I often go to ‘Bada Sikdang’.

V.G: Where would you recommend Korean girls to go when they come to Tokyo for the first time?

MK: Since Tokyo is a bit of a quiet city, I would say Harajuku. You’d be able to experience an individualistic, vigorous and exuberant side of Tokyo.

V.G: You have a lot of interest in clothes. Do you know any Korean designers?

MK: I know GOEN.J and Lucky Chouette. I also like Seo Hye-in’s collection; she’s currently doing activities in London. I know 99%is- BAJOWOO who’s rising in Japan, too.

V.G: What would you want to work as if you were not a model?

MK: Producer. In the future if there is an opportunity, I hope to try brand directing. I’d like to try producing kids’ entertainment. But as for now, I really enjoy being a model. I’m satisfied.

V.G: Your younger sister is a model too. What do the two of you usually talk about?

MK: We almost never talk about work at all. We’re both busy so we don’t talk about work. It’s really just about our own daily lives.

V.G: What’s something you treasure the most? If your house was on fire and you could only bring out one thing with you, what would it be?

MK: Ah, I have to think hard about that. There are many things (I’d like to take) but it would be my cats Ciccio and Bubu.

VG: What’s the most precious to you?

MK: People. My family, friends, and co-workers. These people see a natural and organic side of me. I think being considerate is important. The people who think of and care about me, to me that’s more precious than anything.

V.G: What makes you complete?

MK: Kindness. Interacting sincerely with the people around you lets you have a kind heart. I wish to be stronger, though.

V.G: Before coming to Tokyo, we asked photographer Les about you. He said that you were always consistent. You treat people the same way now as you did 3 years ago. Our staff also called you ‘Space’s Angel’. How do you feel about this new nickname?

V.G: Space’s Angel? Haha. I like it.

*In case you’re wondering, Kiko’s real age is 24, but if converted to Korean age it’s 26*
