The events unfolding in Venezuela at the moment are yet another catalyst exposing the nebulous idealism that fuels the majority of the “left” in western countries, particularly the US.  It is an idealism that promotes “democracy” as an end in itself, that the state is an unequivocal evil in itself, and that any gathering of people claiming to fight for the former against the latter is somehow “revolutionary.”  It is a position loaded with the assumption that these governments are depriving their people of the “democracy” and quality of life that is enjoyed in countries like the US, UK, Germany, France, etc. – a “democracy” that is by and for the rich and a quality of life that was built on the backs of black and brown people through imperialist domination, oppression, and exploitation.  They want “market forces” to keep food on grocery store shelves, which means keeping the poor starving on the streets as they will have no money to purchase it with.  They want crime to be reduced, which means oppressive policing of the poor, mostly non-white people of Venezuelan society.  They want “democracy,” which means these same poor people’s voice being cut out of the electoral process.  This is truly what the anti-government protesters are fighting for, whether they are conscious of it or not.
