This is a piece I did recently for Virginia Living magazine about creating your own little patio garden. Once spring arrives, I’m definitely going to try and apply the gardening knowledge I picked up while working on this! Also the magazine did a little feature on me which is pretty cool:)

Unarmed black teenager James Means fatally shot by white man who called him “another piece of trash”

  • On Monday night, 15-year-old James Means was reportedly shot and killed by a man he “bumped into” outside of a Dollar General store in Charleston, West Virginia.
  • Means, a black teenager, was said to be unarmed.
  • That same night, police arrested William Pulliam, 62, in connection with the shooting. Pulliam had gone to dinner after the shooting.
  • Pulliam was white and carrying a gun, despite no permit to own a firearm due to a previous conviction for domestic violence
  • Pulliam reportedly “admitted” to fatally shooting Means, telling police, “The way I look at it, that’s another piece of trash off the street.”
  • A GoFundMe has been set up for Means’ funeral
  • Pulliam, whose criminal history includes physical abuse of his wife and daughter, has a history of harassing teens in the area.
The Accents of the Seven and Reyna and Nico and Calypso

Percy: He lives in Manhattan, for fucks sake. His accent is loud and very thick, but you wouldn’t expect it because he’s mostly quiet since the Stoll bothers started to make fun of it. Tartarus made him even quieter, to the point where it’s barely a whisper. Now, he barely has an accent

Annabeth: After living in Virginia for some time, and I know what the accent is like after being there myself, it’s a dignified, subtle southern accent. She tries to hide it when talking, but getting very emotional or sleepy brings it out heavily. Like Percy, Tartarus has basically wiped it away as if it weren’t there to begin with

Jason: Living in California for 16 years doesn’t go away, I also know that because I’ve lived there myself for 15. It’s a cool, sorta laid back accent. But after being with the Legion for nearly literally his whole life, he has it clipped and you could barely hear it when he was praetor. Now, the fucker could be a surfer kid for all you know

Piper: An Oklahoman accent is a little tricky to spot. It’s not as twangy as a Texan accent nor as drawling as a Virginian accent, but somewhere right in between. It kinda reminds you about summer days and warm nights even when it’s below 0

Frank: He’s Canadian, so unless he’s flustered, you don’t hear the stereotypical accent that most Americans poke fun at. You do hear it on occasion in his Z’s and long O’s

Hazel: She lived in New Orleans, Louisiana for quite some time. That accent can never go away. A friend of mine told me that it’s called Sweet Southern. Because when you hear it, it sounds like honey being dripped into your ears. Supposedly

Leo: Even though he’s lived in Texas most of his life, I like to think he has a bit of a Spanish accent underlying the Texan twang he has. It’s not obnoxious, but you do kinda expect some Spanish guitar to come in out of nowhere when he gets worked up over an invention

Calypso: She is as Greek as you can get. The arm/hand gestures when she gets passionate in her conversation, the thick Grecian accent in every syllable that has Leo hanging onto every time she talks. It’s not going away, even after 3,000 years

Reyna: Since she’s from Portugal, she has a thick Portuguese accent in her English. And since we all know how terrifying it is to hear Spanish being yelled at you, just imagine hearing Portuguese being calmly spoken to you with rage simmering underneath

Nico: He was raised in Italy for a while in his youth before the Lotus Hotel and Casino. Don’t even try to get me to think that he doesn’t do the hand thing when he gets frustrated by Will when Nico needs to have a physical done

Check out this mesmerizing drone shot of the The Virginia Living Museum in Newport News, Virginia by Overview content creator Micah Marshall. The open-air museum houses many “living-exhibits” with more than 245 different species of plants and animals, most of which are native to the state of Virginia.

For fiction, imaginative work that is, is not dropped like a pebble upon the ground, as science may be; fiction is like a spider’s web, attached ever so lightly perhaps, but still attached to life at all four corners. Often the attachment is scarcely perceptible; Shakespeare’s plays, for instance, seem to hang there complete by themselves. But when the web is pulled askew, hooked up at the edge, torn in the middle, one remembers that these webs are not spun in mid-air by incorporeal creatures, but are the work of suffering human beings, and are attached to grossly material things, like health and money and the houses we live in.

On Schmomeland Caroline is played by Julia Stiles, Quincy is played by Robert Pattinson. It’s an epic love story in which all questions are answered, ILYs shared, Quincy achieves 100% recovery, and graphic, gorgeous sex is depicted — Caroline doesn’t even wear a bra! Darth doesn’t exist in this universe, and communication always flows freely. At their wedding, Caroline is given away by Shaul and married by Lockwood, as flower girl Franki beams beside the happy couple. They have beautiful twins whom they name Maxine and Virginia. They live happily ever after.

The West Virginia Flood of 2016 (Pt. 1)

Recently I took a sunday afternoon drive to Clendenin, West Virginia. Clendenin is a town in Kanawha County that was one of many areas that were affected by the flooding that occurred last summer when around 10 inches of rain fell in a 12 hour period. When it was all said and done 23 people lost their lives, 6 of those being in Kanawha County. It was one of the worst floods in West Virginia history and the deadliest flash flood in the US since the 2010 flooding in Tennessee. The destruction was so severe and widespread that the governor declared a state of emergency for 44 of the 55 counties in West Virginia.

Flooding in Appalachia is a subject that hits deep with me. The summer before my senior year of high school a flash flood hit southern West Virginia where I lived in Wyoming County. I wasn’t home at the time but the way my mother tells it the flooding only lasted about 20 minutes. That’s all it took. 20 Minutes for 4 feet of muddy water from the overflowing Guyandotte River to rush through our house and destroy everything we had. The river was at the end of our dead end street and normally didn’t have a depth of more than a few feet, but that day it had crested at 18-20 feet in places. During the actual flooding I was a few miles outside of town riding an atv through the mountains with a friend. Up until that point in my 17 years on this planet I had never been on an atv and I was having the time of my life speeding through the southern West Virginia landscape. To this day the irony kills me that while I was off enjoying myself, everything I had acquired in life was being destroyed.

When I arrived in Clendenin I was shocked to see it still in the shape that it was in. The flood happened in June of 2016, here it was January 2017 and it appeared as if the river had just ran through a couple of weeks ago. Piles of people’s belongings stacked in front of ruined homes, trash carried by the river hanging from tree limbs, rows of closed businesses, and that stench of dampness and mold. All the terrible memories I had from the flood of 2001 came crashing back. It really makes me sick to think of all the money that is spent on something like a presidential campaign, where one person is basically just saying “look how much of an asshole my opponent is”, when that same amount of money could easily be put to an area such as this and help people rebuild their lives.

anonymous asked:

Why do the Muslims hate us?

Well, for starters most don’t hate us especially young Muslims who have had a taste of freedom. If you want to understand why they hate us imagine this:

An ancient book is uncovered saying that the Book of Mormon is actually true and the ancient Americans were the lost ten tribes of Israel and that they lived in Virginia which Yahweh gave to them. Then, Russia and China declare that Virginia belongs to the Jewish people by ancient right of ownership and back the European Jews in war where they dispossess the people of Virginia and take the land and hold it by force of arms. Imagine the U.S. tried three different times to retake it only to be repulsed each time. Not only that but after the last time the Jewish State captured more U.S. land and occupied it and began to slowly fill it up with new settlements. Imagine that this new Jewish state we can call “Judah” became a nuclear power in it’s own right. Now, a small but determined band of Virginians, who some call fanatics, fight back with car bombs and suicide bombers.

So, freedom fighters or terrorists?
