Ship Awareness #4: Dotty (Fast and Furious Franchise)

Dotty = Dom & Letty

With Furious 7 making it’s debut this weekend, I thought it would be a great time to add to my ship awareness collection and these two have been on there since movie one back in 01.

Dom and Letty grew up in the same neighborhood, ever since she was 10 Letty loved cars and because of his popularity and reputation from his knowledge of cars, she was interested in Dom who didn’t even know she existed for 5 years. To outside people like Mia, Dom’s sister,who thought Dom interest in Letty started when she turned 16, this is untrue however because he later confesses to her that he noticed her at 15 and that he used to try to impress her  - only to cause an accident and leave her with a scar. Young love….

When the first movie starts out you can tell they have that juvenile kind of relationship, the kind where one party takes the other for granted, and does dumb shit so the other person’s attention is always on them. Of course when things like lives are on the line you get to see growth and true depth within not only the relationship between the two, but the individual characters themselves. Dom is that alpha male…and there’s a lot of female archetypes that could be paired with an alpha and luckily for this series we got Letty…the alpha female. She takes the backseat to no one’s bullshit, not even Dom himself. Always letting her presence be known, her opinion be heard. Being the alpha male, Dom of course is comfortable with showing that power, that no-bars hold type of personality and she reminds him that he doesn’t always have to be so tough, that even though he’s the father figure, he has bounds he has to stay within.

Dom loves Letty because she’s down to earth, because no matter what, she never turned her back on him or wrote him off. She rides hard and she puts family first just like him, willing-to risk her life for any member. Letty loves Dom because he’s crazy, because he goes against the grain, because he’s a daredevil, a ball of excitement and power. Letty needs someone who can handle her. Someone who lets her encompass the total package of her womanhood, from the strong bad-ass part to the vulnerable soft parts.  And Dom is that person. You can tell the power in him, the daredevil gets to her not only because it says he can handle the challenge, not only because it’s one alpha being aware of another, but because she knows he can be trusted to protect whats his or die trying. As dangerous and uprooted their lives are, for her life with him is stable and safe because the man himself is so. If he says he’s gonna do it he does it, if he says he cares…he does.

I think that’s whats most beautiful about their relationship, theres no questioning the love. Even after the amnesia she can still tell this man loves her, he still knows Letty is in there somewhere and so is the feelings.

This couple is for the power lovers, the ones who love two alphas together. They maintain a great balance of vulnerability and strength. They leave behind no doubt that they were made for each other and leave one with unrealistic relationship goals because there’s only one Dom and one Letty and they’ve already found each other (multiple times).

Of course I always say the characters wouldn’t be half as great without the actors who portray them but this is doubly so with the Letty character and the Dotty relationship. Michelle, who plays Letty, always says that Vin (Dom) has always treated her like a queen, that they have a strong bond and that he’s one of her best friends if not ‘the’ best friend. This is probably due to the fact that Vin as fought just as hard for Michelle as his character has for her character. Its no secret that the first movie relationship was set to go in a total different direction with Letty playing a love triangle between Dom and Brian, she was in fact supposed to cheat on him with the latter. This however upset Michelle to the point of tears. Having really just started on her career she was set on not playing roles that went against everything she holds dear. She didn’t want to be the slut character, she also didn’t believe that her character would cheat and demote herself from alpha male to cute boy…(I have to admit I agree). Vin pulled her to the side and asked her to explain it to him and afterwards he told her that he had her back and would handle it…well he must have kept his word because the Mia character was added as his sister and Brian’s love interest and the Dotty relationship was set.

“I can’t say enough wonderful things. Michelle was my first love in film. So it was a very special thing to return to, to that role, to a character that so clearly has such a strong love for another character. I’m lucky that Michelle Rodriguez is so lovable on and off screen. Makes it very easy to return to that role.” - Vin Diesel

Vin went to bat again for Michelle to return her to the casting after her character had been killed off which had caused an uproar within the fandom requesting her return. They shared these wishes with Vin through his facebook account and he listened. He often totes that there would have been no Fast 6 without Michelle (the story was in fact deeply about her character). They fought for her characterization, for her character to be an equal, to fight like a part of the team, to have a relationship worth having. It wouldn’t have been the same without the actors caring.
