The design for Maleficent's clothes occurred to Davis when he was looking through a book on Medieval art; one of the manuscript images featured a religious figure with long robes, the ends of which resembled flames. Davis incorporated this into Maleficent's final design. [x] Early designs feature Maleficent's signature dress in red instead of purple.

Poor unfortunate souls. In pain, in need. This one longing to be thinner; that one wants to get the girl, and do I help them? Yes, indeed. Those poor unfortunate souls. So sad, so true. They come flocking to my cauldron crying, “Spells, Ursula, please!” and I help them! Yes I do.
“The princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty, beloved by all who know her. But… before the sun sets on her 16th birthday, she shall prick her finger, on the spindle of a spinning wheel - AND DIE!”
