vicarious travel

I get a lot of people going “How can you afford to buy so many books? Aren’t you just out of school?” Here’s the thing: My books have been amassed over a long, reckless career as a reader, many of them for little money from used bookstores, garage sales, birthdays, you name it. But more importantly, books keep me from indulging some of my more expensive habits. A night in with a book doesn’t cost anything. A night out at the bar costs a lot (Oh hi, Visa bill from Halloween). I have terrible wanderlust. I love to travel. But I can’t afford to drop $1,300 on plane tickets and go skipping off to Prague. So I read. I travel vicariously, and that keeps me content, for a while. So, slow your roll, haters and passers of judgment. How I spend my money is my business, and I choose to spend it on books.

Hey, I've been reading your fics and they're awesome! Please... Can you do one in which Hermione comes home from Hogwarts and Ron is living in Grimmauld Place with Harry, but Harry is with the Aurors... so, Ron is most of the time helping George and alone at home, everyone oblivious of Ron's depressing situation (Fred, nightmares, Malfoy Manor, locket)... Hermione discovers he hasn't been taking care of himself (smoking, thinner)? Thank you very much!!

(Jaqueline Oquendo) May I request this donation prompt? Blake and Weiss have been dating for a while now and Blake's best friend Sun is coming back from his overseas trip and is very excited to meet Weiss for the first time as on the other hand Weiss is a bit nervous.

A/N: I feel this is right up Dash’s alley, ahah Thanks for requesting this! I’ve missed writing Sun!

Blake was very excited for today.

Not only was it the weekend, and she was able to spend the entire morning alone with her girlfriend, but she’d get to enjoy the afternoon for a different reason.

Her childhood friend Sun, who had a tendency to travel more often than he stayed put, would be returning from a three-month voyage out to sea, where he’d visited several different islands and places. Blake had kept in touch with him throughout his journey, returning every chicken-scratch post card message he sent her with a thoughtful letter.

She had a collection of such post cards on the bulletin board in her room, liking to think that she was able to travel vicariously through her best friend.

In her letters to him, she’d told Sun about Weiss, the girl she’d started dating shortly after Sun had left on his most-recent adventure. And judging by his reactions and what he’d written back to her, he seemed very excited to meet the ‘lucky girl.'

Blake was excited to introduce them as well; the thought of the two people she loved most in the world meeting one another made her more enthusiastic than anything else.

But that morning, as she sat on the couch waiting for Sun’s text that he’d arrived, it became quite clear to Blake that she was the only one in the apartment who was thrilled about all of this.

believingbooks asked: hey! I love your account and your recommendations. so can you please recommend me some books on travelling or travel journals or exploring the world?😊

I love books about traveling and exploring different areas of the world I haven’t seen yet. I like living vicariously through their travels too! Here are some of my favorites in this category! Hope they help you too!

1. Wild by Cheryl Strayed

2. On the Road by Jack Kerouac

3. Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson

4. 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson

5. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

6. Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Most of mine explore a specific place, so if you want one of a more nonfiction nature that explores many different places- let me know, and I can do some research :)!

Thanks for the question! Happy reading!

Show us a place we would rather be, in 5 photographs, during the month of May!

Gray-Card likes to travel, but ‘the man’ wants to keep Gray-Card chained to a desk all summer long, which, reluctantly, Gray-Card agrees to because of a love of food, electricity, gasoline, internet and a place to sleep each night.

Gray-Card has devised a plan to travel vicariously through tumblr’s #photographers on tumblr tag and is pleased to announce the forthcoming “PASSPORT TO THE WORLD PASSPORT” photo travel challenge!

  1. Show us a place you have been or the place you are in a 5 photo series.
Show us what makes it special.

What is interesting in your hometown?

    Where is your favorite place?

What is next to the Eiffel Tower?  (we have no idea)

Show us in 5 shots, no more, no less.

  2. Post it on YOUR Tumblr from May 1 to May 31 and then send us the PERMALINK (the direct link to your post, where the notes are) and we will reblog each properly submitted posting, up to 2 per person.

  3. No need to follow us or reblog this.

Open to all skill levels and no one that successfully submits will be turned down.

  4.  5 photos, location (description or story if you want), Permalink sent to , during the month of May.

    Simple as that.

Skimmons takes a night-walk on the beach after a long day? Fluff, fluff, & more fluff. :)

A/N: So, I guess this is a sort of answer to the prompt? I took the basic idea and hopefully I didn’t stray too far from what you had in mind, anon! I also think this could serve as a sort of sequel to my previous story “Next Stop Shanghai-La” but I don’t necessarily think that you have to read that one. I hope this is fluffy enough!
