“…keep alive the memory of the age that is gone, so that people will remember the Great Danger, and so love their beloved land all the more. And that will keep you as busy and as happy as anyone can be, as long as your part in the Story goes on.”
“no matter what i attempt, even if it’s the most simple of tasks, it always ends in failure. unfortunately, i find that my life is one big regret after another. yet, after all these years, i still don’t know when to give up. is it my fault to keep trying when the results are always the same? is it impossible for me to make things right? even if i’d try to give up, i don’t think I could. it’s not in my nature to submit in the face of disappointment. in the end, i guess i’m just a glutton for punishment. i really am an idiot.”
The word abuse is very deeply tied to the SS ship in many people’s minds. The various times that Sasuke has needlessly tried to kill or hurt her stand as clear examples.
Some SS retaliate that these claims are hypocritical because of all the other times that Sasuke has harmed others he is close to. It’s true, Sasuke was a very unbalanced person for the majority of the series, hurting most of the people he came in contact with one way or another. But what really strikes me as important isn’t just what he did to them, but how they reacted and what they did back.
Sasuke has hurt Naruto many, many times. But Naruto never just sat and took the abuse. He fought back. Although he was sad over what Sasuke was doing, and becoming, he never allowed it to stump him but rather used it as motivation to continue forward. His character never regressed due to Sasuke, but gained a great maturity from their interactions and shared experiences. Then you look at how he interacted with Sasuke after acts of violence. He never purposefully instigated violence with Sasuke, preferring to talk things out and reason with Sasuke. When Sasuke brought about violence, Naruto viewed the option of killing Sasuke as a last resort. His goal when dealing with Sasuke was to stop Sasuke, without hurting him.
Naruto’s view of and interactions with Sasuke make the abuse in their relationship less prominent because of Naruto’s view of Sasuke. Sasuke may have hurt Naruto, but Naruto always defended himself. Naruto also tried to bring as little violence as possible, preferring to talk things out. Sasuke also tried to talk to Naruto BEFORE any fighting started.
Karin has also been hurt by Sasuke many times. Due to circumstance she was unable to fight back, but her attitude is still noteworthy. After Sasuke stabbed her, she tried to create an emotional distance between him and herself, acknowledging that what he did was wrong and that she believed she deserved better than betrayal. After their reunion, she attitude was again important. She was angry, she wasyelling and screaming at him, and only his apology calmed her down. She was not meek, and mentally/emotionally defended herself from Sasuke’s mistreatment. But Karin did not ever lower herself or allow Sasuke’s mistreatment to affect her view of herself.
While Sasuke very clearly abused her, she also very clearly removed herself from the situation when she realized this. Karin never chased after this abuse, or brought excessive violence into the situation when it was not necessary.
Then you have the abuse between Sakura and Sasuke. The physical component of their abuse is incredibly important, but what’s notable is that it isn’t one sided. Sakura actively sought conflict with Sasuke, never trying to reason with him before their fights. Her first priority was always to either deceive him to make victory easier, or to attack him before he could attack her. No compromise or understanding was ever attempted, nor did it ever seem to be an option in her mind. Mean while Sasuke often didn’t devote too much thought into attacking her in turn, him hurting her without thought or pause. He also placed her in an overly cruel Jutsu, when the pain it inflicted was entirely optional. They constantly hurt each other without ever trying to settle matters verbally or reach any sort of agreement.
Even more important than the physical abuse to me is the emotional abuse. Where Karin and Naruto stood up for themselves, Sakura accepted the abuse without pause. She lowered her dignity and view of herself due to Sasuke’s influence on her, without the slightest remorse in doing so. Sasuke was never a source of strength to her, but as an individual he was a weakness and means of lowering her self-esteem. While in part one he did at times help her feel better, in part 2 that type of interaction is long gone, as is the Sasuke the carried those actions out, yet still Sakura clings to Sasuke, knowing full and well that he is not a positive influence on her. When she and Sasuke reunited, she was not shown having any anger towards him, despite him murder attempts. Just as she has never one been shown to believe that she deserved better than him. She had always meekly took his abuse and seemingly agreed that this was all she deserved. THAT’S WHAT MAKES SASUSAKU ABUSIVE TO ME. That no matter what pain he inflicts upon her, she believes that the love she feels justifies it and makes the hurt worth it. She is ‘addicted’ to him, and finds it non-optional to ever stop pursuing her affection for him because of her belief that once in love it is impossible to change your feelings, no matter what they put you through.
But her mindset towards Sasuke is also abusive on this front, because she doesn’t view Sasuke as a person, only as the object of her affection. Despite the line about her taking his pain, never once was she seen sincerely trying to empathize with him. When he acted in ways that didn’t cater to her feelings, she cried and tried to convince him to act in accord to her wishes, often missing the entire point of his actions. When Sasuke reached a certain point, she deemed his life unworthy and judged that he was beyond help, leaving her only option killing him. She considered her first and only option murder, when that should be a last possible resort. All of these decisions were made without Sakura ever once having a face-to-face conversation with Sasuke, and even as she went to kill him no effort to convince or reason with him was ever made. Sakura only views Sasuke as an objection to love, caring about him for the sake of her own feelings, not his well being.
Some people try to justify this love by saying that ‘love is blind’. indeed, the love she has for him is blind, but that statement needs to be looked at from a perspective that isn’t romanticized. The love she has for him has no reason, lending no justification to the pain her admiration of him causes. Meanwhile, the love she has for him also causes her to objectify him. The concept of blind love isn’t romantic, it’s a pathetic attempt at justifying something which reason cannot support.
The sea refreshes our imagination because it does not make us think of human life; yet it rejoices the soul, because, like the soul, it is an infinite and impotent striving, a strength that is ceaselessly broken by falls, an eternal and exquisite lament. The sea thus enchants us like music, which, unlike language, never bears the traces of things, never tells us anything about human beings, but imitates the stirrings of the soul. Sweeping up with the waves of those movements, plunging back with them, the heart thus forgets its own failures and finds solace in an intimate harmony between its own sadness and the sea’s sadness, which merges the sea’s destiny with the destinies of all things.

“I’ll tell them how I survive it. I’ll tell them that on bad mornings, it feels impossible to take pleasure in things because I’m afraid it could be taken away. That’s when I make a list in my head of every act of goodness I’ve seen someone do. It’s like a game. Repetitive. Even a little tedious after more than twenty years. But there are much worse games to play.”

“That guy, Shizuo Heiwajima…” “That monster…” “I heard he died…” “He got hit by a car, and was sent flying…” “He was trying to protect that girl…” “He ended up in some dump somewhere…” “Shizuo, he…” “That guy…” “I heard he got hit by a motorbike…” “He got into trouble with the Yakuza, and fell off a building…” “No, he got stabbed by some lady, and died…” “Seriously?..” “The kid was there…” “So he was human, then?”
Utter nonsense. In their own way, they were extreme rumours…
“Oi, have you heard?” “Heard what?” “About Shizuo Heiwajima.” “…… What’s that monster done now?” “That guy…… I heard he got hit by a truck, and was injured pretty bad.” “…… Serious?” “Yeah. He was being chased by Yakuza, and jumped off a building and it just went…… ‘bang’, straight into him.” “Meaning…… He’d be pretty beat up right now?”
“In that case, I have heard one other thing…” “What?” “Apparently he got himself a woman.” “Seriously!?” “Yeah, sounds like he’s been walking around town with some lady all the time recently.”
“No, listen to this! That lady, apparently there was a kid following her around too!” “Huh?” “You should take a seat for this. It sounds like that Shizuo has a kid! And she’s already around primary school age!” “You’re joking!” “I mean, that guy too young isn’t he?” “I heard that it’s just some girl he used to go out with in high school, who came up to him one day and said 'this girl is your daughter’.” [ch.4 Vol.7]
