All of the Louisiana Opal came from one very small mine located in Vernon Parish Louisiana. The mine was called Louisiana Opal Exchange Mine, also known as, The Hidden Fire Opal Mine and was operated from 1989-1993. The small scale mining operation was shut down and ever since then no Louisiana Opal has been mined again. To date, this Louisiana opal is the first and only precious opal known to be discovered in Louisiana.
Louisiana Opal is a sandstone/quartzite with precious opal cement and matrix. Due to its formation, it is a very solid opal and does not require any treatment or backings to make it stable.
