Are you nervous about reading The Pearl Thief, the recently released prequel to Code Name Verity? Maybe you read Rose Under Fire, which was good, but didn’t quite engage you as much as CNV? Maybe you’re worried that you’ll miss Maddie. Maybe you’re not ready to ugly sob again. I get that. I too had those reservations.
But good news, my darlings. I read it (in one afternoon, I couldn’t put it down) and am here to tell you that it’s up to snuff. More than up to snuff, actually. I loved it. I was delighted to hear Julie’s voice again, to watch her be so unabashedly and unashamedly her, to see her interact with Jamie, to hear her figuring out who she is and who she wants to be. She’s so flawed and clueless and clever and impulsive and alive. It made me ache.
As for Maddie’s absence, all I can say is that I think that Maddie’s presence is still felt. Her absence was very pronounced to me, shown in how Julie’s life looks without her. Which is not to say that Julie’s life is empty without her, but it definitely is richer with her. It’s nice to go through The Pearl Thief knowing that in a short time Julie meets someone who is her equal and loves her earnestly and completely.
I’m so excited to share these! And also excited that the start of this fic has been posted. It has been such a delight watching Verity work on it earlier this year and collabing on it. <3 I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
I’m looking forward to doing more complete illustrations for it this year! <3
Miss Allison Argent and her daemon Pascal have just returned to San Francisco from Europe. They’re supposed to be restoring the Argent name, but the skeletons in the family closet won’t stay hidden beneath the rubble of the Great Fire…
Mr. Derek Hale and his daemon Priska are caught up in the struggle for power in the city’s supernatural underworld. If they want to avoid a confrontation with the city’s hunters, they’ll have to be careful indeed…
…will the flame of their love set San Francisco on fire again?
do you know any Teen Wolf mpreg blogs/fics? preferably sterek or any ship with stiles
*squeaks* ah I’m sorry I’m not a big mpreg reader, so I don’t have a bunch of recs for you– I did enjoy reading this fic:
have a mind to let my whole body go by verity (E, 14k)
Derek’s a pregnant omega werewolf; Stiles and Erica do steady business as the only supernaturally qualified omega midwives in five counties. Clearly, it’s meant to be.
And I haven’t read most of these, but you can look at some recs made by other people:
So I was re-reading (for the eighty bazillionth time) verity-burns ’s fics, and a line in the fic Given in Evidence really struck me, especially given some of the meta debate I’ve seen recently. The line is:
[Sherlock] probably had at least half a dozen reasons for every move he made - that didn’t mean they couldn’t all be valid.
The story (which has over 116,000 hits on ao3, so I’m assuming most have read it) is set post-TRF, pre-TEH and finished in 2012, and concerned itself, as so many post-TRF fics did, with Sherlock’s return to London and to John. While I won’t give a full plot summary (though I would recommend reading it, or any of the other fics verity-burns has written) the gist of it is Sherlock returns to London, and John is incensed and incredibly hurt when he quickly realizes that Sherlock had told a bunch of people (including Molly and Lestrade) about his return. Over the course of solving a case, they slowly repair their relationship; John learns to trust Sherlock with his emotions and Sherlock learns how to recognize and accept the fact that he has emotions.
I want to use a specific scene from this story to examine how Sherlock’s (and John’s, though I won’t get as much into him because welovethebeekeeper wrote a lovely meta about John Watson) actions are sometimes interpreted by the fandom, and how sometimes we have to accept that people (even fictional ones) will do or say things for a variety of reasons, all of which may be valid.
