Day 26: Squeak

Twenty-sixth we have “Daine” Veralidaine Sarrasri in the Tortall Universe by @tamorapierce . “Squeak” can be taken two ways here, either a noise she makes in one of the infinate animal forms she can take and combine with her Wild Magic. Or…it could be the noise a person makes when they realize this girl is after them ;)

Proper scans to come later! ❤︎

Tortallan heroines sorted into hogwarts houses

Alanna is clearly a gryffindor. Brave, idealistic, fond of slaying literal and/or metaphorical monsters.

Daine is a ravenclaw. Curious, intellectually hungry, once stopped her heartbeat to listen to whales.

Kel is a hufflepuff. Loyal, hardworking, pragmatic. Mildly baffled when she gets recognition for doing something she considers her job.

Aly is a slytherin. Sly, clever, would never do something the normal way when she can do it a better way.

Beka is a little harder to pin down, but I think she’s a gryffindor at heart with hufflepuff methodology. She would like to be able to slay the world’s evils in one fell swoop, but knows she can’t. Instead she does her best to stop the small ones.

man so this episode is making me remember like.

People always talk about Daine Sarrasri being Wonderfully Extra by bringing a literal Zombie Dinosaur Apocalypse and going on a destruction spree, wrecking an entire palace on her zombie dino skeleton steed because she thought her friend was dead and then, when called on it, going “aaaahaha i guess i lost my temper a bit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯”

which like. its fair to call that Wonderfully Extra. but idk what any sensible reader could be thinking to expect much less from her, when in the first book she literally dies to try and talk to some dolphins, and then just straight up handles a pirate invasion by dialing up a fucking kraken. Like the only level this girl knows is the maximum.

Sarra looked at her daughter and said reproachfully, “Speaking of war, I never raised you to be always fighting and killing. That’s not woman’s work.”

“It’s needful, Ma. You taught me a woman has to know how to defend herself.”

“I never!” gasped Sarra, indignant.

“You taught me when you were murdered in your own house,” Daine said quietly.
