vasily livanov holmes

So now that it’s over I can finally show you guys the covers I did for the Watson Washington convention this year :D

I don’t think I’ve ever drawn this many faces properly together in one place D:

Thanks @sherlock-seattle for the opportunity, it was a lot of fun!

Russian Holmes

Soooo…we’ve started on Russian Holmes today!!!!!!! And I cannot add enough exclamation marks. I am already so enamoured. Some shaky camera work and decidedly not British buildings aside, the first film/episode was GREAT. I love that they took the time to show us Holmes and Watson’s first meeting from A Study in Scarlet and then went straight into The Speckled Band. Yes, we didn’t get to see a detailed “report” of Holmes examining the house (or Watson adorably fumbling about in the dirt), but we got a nice introduction to the characters and their relationship and that really worked for me.

I enjoy Vasily Livanov as Holmes. He’s a great mixture of detached and caring, sometimes a little rude but at other times (particularly towards Watson) quite patient and indulgent.

And Vitaly Solomin is a great, great Watson. How do I love him…let me count the ways. He’s curious, genuine and kind, but also assertive and - I’d imagine - quite stubborn. I love how easily he comes to trust Holmes and how comfortable they are with each other by the end of the episode.

Bonus Points for:

  • boxing in the living room
  • Watson announcing he’s not a nosy fellow and then frantically trying to figure out Holmes’ “secret” without admitting to his curiosity
  • The Magic Flute
  • General Watson adorable-ness

What is Lenfilm Holmes? I keep seeing it on my dash and some of the quotes are AMAZING, especially Lestrade calling out Watson on writing about policemen. Do you recommend it?

I’m thrilled that you asked because what I’m talking about is a Soviet series called The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson (Priklyucheniya Sherloka Kholmsa i Doktora Vatsona, studio Lenfilm 1979–1986), starring Vasily Livanov as Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Watson, and it’s definitely

ever filmed in Russia. I love how the series is full of warmth and love of the original stories. Holmes and Watson are both wonderful, and don’t let me get started with Mrs Hudson! So yes, I warmly recommend you to watch it!

It’s available on Youtube with English subtitles!

Holmes vs Stapleton: the face/hands journey showdown

who did it better?

Saturday’s may be for the boys, but Friday’s are for the Holmies. ♡
This is just a small appreciation post for the Bim Bom Bramsel squad, and for how these Friday Holmes watchalongs have been making my week just a little bit better! May our streams continue to be strong and mighty, as we are blessed by the sacred giant image of Livanov- courtesy of @spiritcc during a technology issue. ♡
