Carphephorus odoratissimus; vanillaleaf, deertongue
Cedar Key Scrub State Preserve, Cedar Key, FL (Sept. 2015); Morningside Nature Center, Gainesville, FL (Oct. 2015)
This scrub plant, in the sunflower family, has many-headed purple disc florets. Additionally, the crushed leaves have a lovely odor of vanilla. The second common name I suspect comes from the ovaloid shape of the leaves, which resemble a tongue.
