Blue Origin in-flight abort, October 5, 2016.

New Shepard’s fifth and final flight was its most challenging yet as Blue Origin tested an in-flight abort scenario.

Liftoff occurred at 11:36am EDT from the company’s launch site near Van Horn, Texas. Forty six seconds after liftoff, at an altitude of 16,000 feet and at a speed of around 480 miles per hour, the crew module’s abort motor fired for 1.7 seconds. The capsule was pulled off the booster, which continued to ascent to around 62 miles in altitude.

The capsule landed 4 minutes and 15 seconds after liftoff under its three main parachutes. Defying all odds, the booster - which was not expected to survive due to the extreme stresses placed upon it during the test - safely landed 7 minutes and 38 seconds after liftoff.
