In 2012, archaeologists in Venice uncovered the remains of a 16th-century female “vampire.” She had a brick placed into her mouth so that she could not feed on victims of the plague. This discovery supported the medieval belief that vampires were the cause of plagues.
In 2014, six “vampire” skeletons were discovered in Poland. They had been buried with large rocks or a sickle underneath the chin. The reason behind this was that it was believed that it would keep the “vampire” down and the sickle would sever the neck if they attempted to resurrect.
