valley of the giants

Angela, the tiny giant octopus girl.

She used to live in the canals with Meg until one fateful day when everything changed. She’s bitter after having lost all she had. She refuses to speak and she harbors a burning hatred for the Master of the castle.

Meg misses her, even-though their past relationship was somewhat strained by predator’s rivalry. She’s too small to return to the canals (as Meg would eat her instantly) so she’s kept in a cramped aquarium in the Master’s throne room.

Marble is the only one she seems to tolerate.

Amazon is among 3 tech giants yet to condemn Trump’s proposed Muslim registry

  • A new video campaign is targeting three major Silicon Valley giants – Amazon, Booz Allen Hamilton and Oracle — for their  silence on Trump’s infamous “Muslim registry” proposal.
  • “Tech companies have to choose a side,” Credo senior campaign manager Heidi Hess said in a statement. “Will they stand against Trump’s hate or provide the technology and data to enable it?”
  • Credo Action, a progressive activist network, produced “Tech Companies Have a Choice” as a targeted outreach effort to employees of three tech companies and to pressure its employers to issue statements.
  • “We’re counting on Oracle, Amazon and Booz Allen Hamilton to do what’s right and make it clear that they will play no role in Trump’s chilling Muslim registry proposal,” Hess said. Read more

Valley of the Giants - Oregon

A tiny 51 acre BLM preserve nestled deep in the heavily logged Oregon coast range on the north fork of the Siletz river, the Valley of the Giants boasts some the most massive douglas firs I’ve ever seen. It’s a stunning patch of forest, exploding with life even in the dead of winter. The 30 mile drive through a maze of gravel logging roads was totally worth it just to stand in the presence of these ancient giants.

There is so little canon information out there about Togruta despite the fact that one has a leading role in the cartoons. Well, I have a few of my own headcanons

  • Togruta don’t have human-like ears as they ‘hear’ through their montrals and those work kinda like reverse tuning forks, or passive echolocation. This isn’t so much an hc as it is confirmed but it’s worth noting. Simply, this just means their montrals, which are hollow, pick up sounds after it bounces off of something else.
  • This rarely presents a problem, especially on their homeworld, but in starships it does. Metal is a reflective sound barrier and being surrounded by metal, with lots of noise going on, will amplify the noise incredibly.
  • On their homeworld, this gave them a distinct advantage among certain wildlife and allowed them to rise up the food chain. The movements of other species were given away as they traveled through the plains, carried by the turu grass. This also alerted them to the giant Akul beasts
  • Togruta communities live in forest valleys where canopies kept them out of sight. All the more reason to develop hearing through location.
  • I’ve often wondered what kind of beasts they might have domesticated and my favorite thought, tbh, are birds. The trill-like language of the Togruta, known as Togruti, would be ideal for communicating with birds I think. And, as most everything is on their planet, they would be birds with brightly colored plumage to fit into their surroundings. More than that, they would be efficient ways to enter and exit their communities via flight
  • I’d like to think that voices at certain pitches ‘sound’ very pleasing to them, as would being in certain rooms depending on what material it’s made of

Day 2 of Linktober: Lilytork

Devious bandits of the River Valley, the Lilytorks live underwater hiding underneath giant Lilypads. They are difficult to attack because those who get too close to attack find themselves robbed by their tentacles. The most effective way to take them down? Throw a Bomb on their Lilypad or deflect their energy bolts back at em.

Bilbo … saw that across the valley the stone-giants were out, and were hurling rocks at one another for a game, and catching them, and tossing them down into the darkness where they smashed among the trees far below, or splintered into little bits with a bang …

–JRR Tolkien, The Hobbit

This pair of stone giants has made a playground of an area where a minor rockslide once obstructed the pathway.  They have cleared the area to make a broad ground to run around on, and there they play catch with boulders.

–Gary Gygax, AD&D module S4: The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, TSR, 1982

Then, one owl-less autumn evening, they rounded a ridge and saw the castle. It crept into the sky from the far side of a long, deep valley—thin and twisted, bristling with thorny turrets, dark and jagged as a giant’s grin. Molly laughed outright, but the unicorn shivered, for to her the crooked towers seemed to be groping toward her through the dusk. Beyond the castle, the sea glimmered like iron.

“Haggard’s fortress,” Schmendrick murmured, shaking his head in wonderment. “Haggard’s dire keep. A witch built it for him, they say, but he wouldn’t pay her for her work, so she put a curse on the castle. She swore that one day it would sink into the sea with Haggard, when his greed caused the sea to overflow. Then she gave a fearful shriek, the way they do, and vanished in a sulphurous puff. Haggard moved in right away. He said no tyrant’s castle was complete without a curse.”

Back in the 1800s, you had to walk all the way to the uncanny valley to get your fan service and if you weren’t into the giant-titted mannequin look, well you better get acquainted with the Sears-Roebuck catalog, pal.

But alas… I am now dead. I was fine until I marched off to Snowhead by myself, hoping that I could drive off a demon. It had been wreaking havoc on Goron Village…Then the blizzard at Snowhead blew me into the valley. …And now…Here I am…”

The Goron Mask! Poor Darmani… The giant gash on his stomach is always a sight…!
