Music Spells

So I was thinking about all the different ways music could be used in spell writing.. and coming up with meaningful correspondences is fun but what if it was something more formulaic? Like something along the lines of sigil making.

A spell could be as simple as a motif. It doesn’t have to be a full piece with complicated details. It could be just a few notes you would hum to yourself because they have meaning to you and they resonate a certain energy with you.

One idea I have is corresponding pitches to the letters of the alphabet.
There are 12 pitches in an octave, so the letters would be divided into 12 groups. For example,
(0) A, M, Y
(1) B, N, Z
(2) C, O
(3) D, P
(4) E, Q
(5) F, R
(6) G, S
(7) H, T
(8) I, U
(9) J, V
(10/t) K, W
(11/e) L, X
or if you would like to stick to a specific scale (let’s use an arbitrary major scale for this example),
(Do) A, H, O, V
(Re) B, I, P, W
(Mi) C, J, Q, X
(Fa) D, K, R, Y
(Sol) E, L, S, Z
(La) F, M, T
(Ti) G, N, U
For these examples I grouped the letters by having the letters follow the notes alphabetically, and then repeat notes when they ran out. But there are many other ways you could group them, for example, you could divide the alphabet by 12 pitches, and have the first 3 letters be pitch 0, the next 3 pitch 1, etc.

So for the actual spell!
This would be similar to sigils in the sense that you can write a sentence, respresenting your intent, and then using the formula, turn those into pitches!

For example, the phrase “I am safe” would be “8 0 0 6 0 5 4” using the first method, or “Re Do La Sol Do La Sol” using the second.
One you have the pitches you can be creative, by adding rhythms (maybe build phrases based on word or sentence lengths?), harmonies, articulation (maybe accents on capital letters?), etc.

I hope this gives peoples some ideas!

(Also if it’s just for small motifs like this, I am willing to do spell requests! And I can have them played or sung in whatever instrument you like!)

Origins:

Bullet after bullet ripped through the air. They tore through the human-shaped dummy on the other side of the range, planting ragged holes in the dummy’s two eyes. Smoke billowed from the barrel of the .44 Magnum Revolver, held in the steady, bronzed hands of the man on the other end. Park Jimin glanced down at his gun before placing the safety on and setting it down onto the marble counter.

“Nice shot,” a friend of his, Lim Jaebum, commented with a false smile. He stood in the range beside him, dressed as if he’d just come from a gala- which he most likely had. The man seemed irked at his very presence, though Jimin bitterly wondered why he’d come at all if he disliked him so much.

Ever since Jaebum and BamBam (a sidekick of his) disappeared for months at a time, Jimin had taken over the city of Gotham as its favorite vigilante. Upon their return, Jimin had felt that they knew of his true intentions- neither of the “superheros” had really liked him since their signature signal had been changed from a bat to a target. Jimin was careful around the man- he couldn’t let himself be caught now, could he?

“Could be better,” Jimin returned easily. He slid the .44 into the holster hidden in the side of his jeans and covered it with his t-shirt. “Was there something you needed?”

Jaebum’s dark eyes roamed over Jimin’s. Jimin could remember, on many accounts (after being forced into being partners), of seeing those same eyes behind a black mask. It irked him- the way this man flaunted about so casually, with the entire city of Gotham wrapped around his finger.

Jimin would change that.

“Nope,” Jaebum shrugged, leaned up against the wall.

“Where’s your sidekick?” Jimin enunciated the ‘k”’s, attempting (and failing) to leave the bitter tones out of his voice. He crossed his leather-clad arms over his chest and raised one eyebrow expectantly.

“Home,” Jaebum pushed himself off the counter. “See you soon, Deadshot.” He cast a glance back at Jimin over his shoulder, before disappearing out the door. Jimin glared where he’d stood and gripped the counter. He knew what it was- intimidation. Jaebum was scared of him. Scared that Jimin would strip his title of Gotham’s Hero, that Jimin would succeed in being the best criminal mastermind of Gotham City.

“I’ll get you,” Jimin whispered to himself, a rotten smirk on his face, “Batman.”

-

It was months later when Park Jimin was being dragged into a S.W.A.T. car. He shouted profanities at the bat-clad man and his infamous, scrawny sidekick whose pink-striped hair was unmistakable. “I won’t be gone for long, Lim Jaebum! Everyone will know who you are!” He screamed furiously. Angry veins throbbed in the side of his neck, his throat expanding and nearly sore from all the yelling he’d done in the past minute.

Handcuffs were being clasped around his wrist, a sudden cold that made him shriek all the more. Then, as soon as he’d begun screaming, he fell silent, thrown into the back of the military van with so little of warning. Collapsed face first, he made to sit up, blood from his previous fight trickling down his nose. Strong, dark eyes lifted to meet the similar ones of a man stood across the street. With red hair in his eyes, Jimin stared at the spot where Gotham’s Hero stood, a tiny smile curling at the edges of his red-stained lips. Crimson spilled from them, which he spat onto the floor of the vehicle. Slowly, he tilted his head, the smile becoming a grin- a grin so wide it spread across the entirety of his face, flashing his dirtied teeth and bleeding tongue.

As the door’s slid shut, Deadshot’s left eye began to glow the color of his hair, before darkness enveloped him.

Dr. Edward Hendricks’s Commentary Outline On Patient:

“Patient converses with other inmates. Laughs, jokes, very social. Works out in room. Prefers being out in the sunlight, although he isn’t allowed out often. Reads, writes, extremely intelligent. IQ of 148. Because of this, it is rare that we allow him out to the recess area. Tends to rile up the inmates, likes to start fights. After a period of watching him, it is easy to tell that he is behind many of the prison riots. Seems to be hiding something.”

• Outline Will Continue Thusly as Taken by Dr. Edward Hendricks;

Patient’s Habits: Watching television, reading, writing, causing fights, practicing abilities when alone

Patient’s Abilities (as observed by Dr. Edward Hendricks): shape shifting, morphing, doesn’t seem to be able to alter himself of any other gifts when he takes a different form (i.e., el diablo’s mutant gene over pyrokinesis, cannot obtain this if he takes on the form of el diablo)

Patient’s Choice of Weapon (as seen by observed videos): himself

Physical Appearance: Tan skin, can become scaly if he wishes (uses this as an armor), dark eyes, dark hair, as whatever he shifts into his skin becomes completely white (albino DNA in shifted creatures)

• Weight: 65 kg
• Height: 181 cm
• Blood Type: A
• Eye Color: Brown
• Hair Color: Dark brown
• Ethnicity: South Korean
• Languages Spoken: English, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, Thai

Personality: Rambunctious, enjoys television, incredibly intelligent, IQ of 148

Accomplishments: Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Master’s Degree in Molecular Biology, Bachelor’s Degree in Cultural Studies, Bachelor’s Degree in English Language Studies, Top 1.5% of South Korea in High School,

Criminal Record: First Degree Account of Burglary (10+), Attempted Murder of Im Jaebum (Alias: Batman) on 20+ Different Occasions, Organized Crime

Origins:

They laughed.

They laughed and pointed fingers and he took it- he took it because he knew the lot of them were ants. They were tiny, slimy little insects that would amount to nothing. They would have wives that they’d cheat on and go home to their three children and act as if they weren’t scum, they’d buy boats and brag to their country-club friends, living a meaningless life of lies and disgust. So he didn’t care much. He knew he’d amount to something that was worth more than an insect.

Kim Namjoon was aware of everything.

He had eyes everywhere, watching the streets, patrolling, ensuring that none of his little minions got out of line. It was a power rush for him- having so many people reporting back as if he owned them. And sometimes, he did. Sometimes, he purchased them for this purpose solely. So it was nice to sit at home, in the murky water of Gotham City’s sewers, watching old reruns of vintage movies and chewing on chips from a local grocer. He felt everything, heard everything- but he hadn’t felt them coming.

A lid that was close by slid off, the manhole becoming an open entry point. Namjoon looked quickly, his pupils becoming tiny slits, his iris shifting colors like fog. From the lid, an object dropped in, and the moment it made contact with the water a green smoke burst out. Namjoon’s eyes grew wide and he darted up from his spot, diving into the river of green, skin becoming scales, hair slinking off. But his course of action was too late.

A net dropped over him- one made of chains and metal. It shocked him on contact. Namjoon began to seizure, his eyes grown wide as the electricity pulsed through the water, effectively stopping him from shifting to escape. He gasped, foam bubbling at his mouth, before a recognizable figure dropped into the sewers. He stared at the black costume with blown pupils, before the electricity became too much. His entire body shaking violently, Namjoon’s thoughts went out the window, and he watched his sewer turn black with a flip in his stomach.

-(I changed some things about Killer Croc’s abilities, so deal with it)

Craft Names

We received several asks on the topic of Craft names or Magical names, so I’ve decided to make a post about it.

A Craft name, also known as a magical (or magickal) name is a secondary religious name often adopted by practitioners of Wicca and other forms of witchcraft or magic. Craft names may be adopted as a means of protecting one’s privacy (especially for those who are “in the broom closet”), as an expression of religious devotion, or as a part of an initiation ritual.

A magical name is unique to the practitioner, and there are several ways to find yours. When you find the right name, you’ll keep it for a long time. In some traditions, it‘s customary to wait until you’ve studied a year and a day before claiming your magical name. In others, it is selected at the time of initiation, but still after significant thought has been put into it. Some Pagans have two magical names – one which they use in public and one which is known only to the gods and members of the person’s coven.

Choose a name not only for its sound, but its attributes as well. For example, someone wishing to convey strength in their name might include “oak“ or “iron“ as part of their moniker. A person who is highly creative might select a name that reflects their art or craft. You may want to choose a name based rooted in folklore or mythology. Many people include the name of an animal that resonates with them. A cautionary note here: in the Pagan community, certain animals pop up all the time. You’ll meet two dozen Ravens and just as many Cats, but it’s unlikely you’ll encounter anyone calling himself Wombat or Penguin.

Another popular method of finding a magical name is to choose one that corresponds with your birth number. To find your birth number, begin by adding the digits of your birth date.

If your birthday was September 1, 1966, you would start with the numbers 911966 = 9 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 6 + 6 = 32.

Now take those two numbers (3 and 2), and bring it down to a single digit: 3 + 2 = 5. That number – in this case, 5 – is your birth number.

Use the grid below to find a name that corresponds to the number 5, by calculating the sum of the corresponding letters.

1 = A, J, S

2 = B, K, T

3 = C, L, U

4 = D, M, V

5 = E, N, W

6 = F, O, X

7 = G, P, Y

8 = H, Q, Z

9 = I, R

Let’s say you’ve decide you like the name Willow. Using the letters in “Willow” you would take the numbers 5 + 9 + 3 + 3 + 6 + 5 = 32. From there, 3 + 2 = 5. If the name you like doesn’t match your birth numbers, try some creative or alternate spellings to see what happens.

Choose with care. You’re not creating a role-playing character. You’re adopting a name that is as much a part of you as the name stated on your birth certificate. You have the right to call yourself PrancingGriffin, but we have the right to laugh our asses off at it.

Choose where you use it. Do it consistently, and know your reasons. Most people do not use their Wiccan name in the general public - not because they should be embarrassed about it, but because it creates confusion. Most people who do use them publicly, I suspect, do it for the attention. Some people believe their name should only be used within a circle, or only among members of their coven or Tradition. Some never tell anyone.

Don’t demean your non-Wiccan name. Complete denial of your previous identity is the mark of a cult. Becoming Wiccan does not remove you from the rest of the world. Furthermore, your parents likely put a lot of time an energy into the giving of your name, and it is disrespectful to them to casually discard that gift. This especially applies if you choose to take on a new last name as well - your last name is a link to family and heritage.

Craft names of some famous Wiccans and other Neopagan witches include:

Dafo - the initiator of Gerald Gardner, thought to be Edith Woodford-Grimes.
Scire - AKA Gerald Gardner.
Ameth - AKA Doreen Valiente, Gardner’s first High Priestess.
Dayonis - AKA Thelma Capel who replaced Ameth as Gardner’s High Priestess.
Thelema - AKA Patricia Crowther.
Artemis - AKA Eleanor Bone.
Tanith - AKA Lois Bourne.
Robert - AKA Fred Lamond.
Olwen and Loic - AKA Monique and Campbell ‘Scotty’ Wilson.
Robat - AKA Raymond Buckland, initiated by Olwen and responsible for providing a bridge for Wicca between the UK and USA.
Verbius - AKA Alex Sanders.
Aradia - AKA Phyllis Curott, the story of the adoption of her craft name is told in her autobiographical Book of Shadows (1998)
Silver RavenWolf - AKA Jenine E. Trayer.
Zsuzsanna Budapest - AKA ZsuZsanna Ernese Moukesay.
Starhawk - AKA Miriam Simos.
Cerridwen Fallingstar - AKA Cheri Lesh.
Lady Gwen Thompson - AKA Phyllis Thompson (née Healy)
