been thinking a lot abt some recent experiences alongside this: https://www.buzzfeed.com/aishamirza/until-white-women-ruined-it?utm_term=.hpAQ405br#.atd3m0ja6
and i think one reason the white girl who loves non-white cultures a bit too exuberantly, a bit too loudly, too performatively makes WoC uneasy is bc we recognise that she was probably the girl who stuck out her tongue at our foods in primary school, who will probably become the 40yo WW who talks over or condescendingly to their non-white coworkers, who utilises non-white labour for their own financial/social gain w/o compensating the non-whites whose labour they stole, who votes for their personal interests while recognising the harm this will do to others she doesn’t need to care about. performative interest in non-whiteness is scary bc its so easy to shed, while requiring virtually no commitment to bringing about any equitable future world. in fact the cultural capital they relish in, the identity of being a ‘cool white’ necessarily depends on maintaining hegemonic racism bc that is what enables them to distinguish themselves as superior to, different from other whites + doing so absolves them of any responsibility for their own whiteness. i think Woc intuitively understand that for the other-loving white girl what is at her heart is maintaining an identity of superiority and not bringing about transformations in the world that make anti-racist action commonplace, and we know this ultimately undermines the work we r trying so hard to do bc now we are dealing w insincerity, smoke and mirrors. talking n teaching make absolutely no difference here bc we r dealing w someone who sees the problem but chooses to benefit personally from it, albeit in a non-mainstream, trendy way.
