On This Day In History

January 24, 1945:

Imperial Japanese Navy destroyer Shigure, a Shiratsuyu-class destroyer considered “unsinkable,” is sunk by USS Blackfin (SS-322).

The only survivor of the Battle of Surigao Strait on October 24, 1944, where battleships Yamashiro and Fuso, heavy cruiser Mogami, and fellow destroyers Michishio, Asagumo, and Yamagumo were sunk; Shigure would continue sailing for just 92 more days.
