  • genji: despite all the 'i need healing' memes, they're usually pretty nice. they know the entire team is watching and waiting for them to crash and burn
  • mccree: either spawn from hell or just here to have a good time (usually the latter). will probably try to say hi at the enemy spawn
  • pharah: very friendly. will almost never get their ult to go off but won't be salty about it. thanks healthpacks
  • reaper: KINKY. either cursed as shit or will say hello to anything and everything. anyone that mains reaper has dreamt of him crushing their head between his monster thighs
  • solider 76: VANILLA. it's okay though, most people want to fuck him but can't explain it
  • sombra: definitely only here to have a good time since she's basically useless until the devs give her a monster buff. if the player spams the boop voiceline you will hear that noise in your nightmares forever
  • tracer: very high chance they're gay. very high chance one of the enemy team will switch to tracer because they're annoying
  • ana: absolute sweethearts who will risk life and her other eye to keep you alive. secretly enjoys watching the person she's nanoboosted lose their fucking mind trying to make the most of it though
  • lúcio: again, really sweet. unless they're on ilios in which case he's public enemy number one and even if he's on your team you shoudn't trust him
  • mercy: probably picked healer because everyone else picked genji and hanzo. alternatively, a masochist. if the pistol is used a lot they probably mained medic in TF2 and don't fear god or death
  • zenyatta: most likely play competitive too much. another top tier picks for gays but they probably have clinical depression
  • symmetra: [flicking teleporter on and off] welcome to my reality welcome to my reality
  • reinhardt: in the top three most likely to say hi in spawn. please get behind him
  • roadhog: this one is skin dependent. normal roadhogs are like your weird uncle but roadhogs with the islander or junkenstein's monster skin are maniacs and will hook your entire ancestral line across the map
  • winston: i've only ever seen like three. cryptids
  • zarya: tied with tracer and zenyatta as a pick for gays. a good zarya will take your bullets and shove them back up your ass at mach-1 speed
  • d.va: the chaotic good of the universe. probably has play of the game before the match has even started
  • bastion: probably tried to play bastion in competitive once and that was enough. anyone that places him on that elevator thing in hollywood is a scorpio
  • hanzo: they take skirmish way too seriously
  • junkrat: THE CHAOTIC EVIL TO D.VA'S CHAOTIC GOOD. the sound of a riptire is actually an effective tactic to kill the enemy team irl because half of them will have a stroke out of stress
  • torbjörn: lava eating machine. all of them are cursed and i'm personally afraid of him
  • widowmaker: 57 shots, 1 kill. if they're using the odile skin they're probably a straight male
  • mei: fuck you to hell

Someone else on tumblr pointed out that PASSENGERS might have been a more meaningful movie if it was about just THE ONE person dealing with being alone on the ship for the rest of their life.  And if, to cope, they go through and make it a point to learn everything they can about all of the other people on the ship.

And I just keep thinking about this idea.

On trauma aftermaths that don't advance the plot

The way TV shows trauma can lead people to expect every reference to trauma to be a plot point. This can be isolating to people coping with the aftermaths of trauma. Sometimes people treat us as stories rather than as people. Sometimes, instead of listening to us, they put a lot of pressure on us to advance the plot they’re expecting.

On TV, triggers tend to be full audiovisual flashbacks that add something to the story. You see a vivid window into the character’s past, and something changes. On TV, trauma aftermaths are usually fascinating. Real life trauma aftermaths are sometimes interesting, but also tend to be very boring to live with.

On TV, triggers tend to create insight. In real life, they’re often boring intrusions interfering with the things you’d rather be thinking about. Sometimes knowing darn well where they come from doesn’t make them go away. Sometimes it’s more like: Seriously? This again?

On TV, when trauma is mentioned, it’s usually a dramatic plot point that happens in a moment. In real life, trauma aftermaths are a mundane day-to-day reality that people live with. They’re a fact of life — and not necessarily the most important one at all times. People who have experienced trauma do other things too. They’re important, but not the one and only defining characteristic of who someone is. And things that happened stay important even when you’re ok. Recovery is not a reset. Mentioning the past doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in crisis.

On TV, when a character mentions trauma, or gets triggered in front of someone, it’s usually a dramatic moment. It changes their life, or their relationship with another character, or explains their backstory, or something. In real life, being triggered isn’t always a story, and telling isn’t always a turning point. Sometimes it’s just mentioning something that happened to be relevant. Sometimes it’s just a mundane instance of something that happens from time to time.

Most people can’t have a dramatic transformative experience every time it turns out that their trauma matters. Transformative experiences and moments of revelation exist, but they’re not the end all and be all of trauma aftermaths. Life goes on, and other things matter too. And understanding what a reaction means and where it came from doesn’t always make it go away. Sometimes, it takes longer and has more to do with skill-building than introspection. Sometimes it doesn’t go away.

On a day to day level, it’s often better to be matter-of-fact about aftermaths. It can be exhausting when people see you as a story and expect you to advance the plot whenever they notice some effect of trauma. Pressure to perform narratives about healing doesn’t often help people to make their lives better. Effect support involves respecting someone as a complex human, including the boring parts.

The aftermath of trauma is a day-to-day reality. It affects a lot of things, large and small. It can be things like being too tired to focus well in class because nightmares kept waking you up every night this week. TV wants that to be a dramatic moment where the character faces their past and gets better. In real life, it’s often a day where you just do your best to try and learn algebra anyway. Because survivors do things besides be traumatized and think about trauma. Sometimes it’s not a story. Sometimes it’s just getting through another day as well as possible.

A lot of triggers are things like being unable to concentrate on anything interesting because some kinds of background noises make you feel too unsafe to pay attention to anything else. For the zillionth time.  Even though you know rationally that they’re not dangerous. Even though you know where they come from, and have processed it over and over. Even if you’ve made a lot of progress in dealing with them, even if they’re no longer bothersome all the time. For most people, recovery involves a lot more than insight. The backstory might be interesting, but being tired and unable to concentrate is boring.

Triggers can also mean having to leave an event and walk home by yourself while other people are having fun, because it turns out that it hurts too much to be around pies and cakes. Or having trouble finding anything interesting to read that isn’t intolerably triggering. Or having trouble interacting with new people because you’re too scared or there are too many minefields. Or being so hypervigilant that it’s hard to focus on anything. No matter how interesting the backstory is, feeling disconnected and missing out on things you wanted to enjoy is usually boring.

When others want to see your trauma as a story, their expectations sometimes expand to fill all available space. Sometimes they seem to want everything to be therapy, or want everything to be about trauma and recovery.

When others want every reference to trauma to be the opening to a transformative experience, it can be really hard to talk about accommodations. For instance, it gets hard to say things like:

  • “I’m really tired because of nightmares” or 
  • “I would love to go to that event, but I might need to leave because of the ways in which that kind of thing can be triggering” or 
  • “I’m glad I came, but I can’t handle this right now” or
  • “I’m freaking out now, but I’ll be ok in a few minutes” or 
  • “I need to step out — can you text me when they stop playing this movie?”

It can also be hard to mention relevant experiences. There are a lot of reasons to mention experiences other than wanting to process, eg:

  • “Actually, I have experience dealing with that agency”
  • “That’s not what happens when people go to the police, in my experience, what happens when you need to make a police report is…”
  • “Please keep in mind that this isn’t hypothetical for me, and may not be for others in the room as well.”

Or any number of other things.

When people are expecting a certain kind of story, they sometimes look past the actual person. And when everyone is looking past you in search of a story, it can be very hard to make connections.

It helps to realize that no matter what others think, your story belongs to you. You don’t have to play out other people’s narrative expectations. It’s ok if your story isn’t what others want it to be. It’s ok not to be interesting. It’s ok to have trauma reactions that don’t advance the plot. And there are people who understand that, and even more people who can learn to understand that.

It’s possible to live a good life in the aftermath of trauma. It’s possible to relearn how to be interested in things. It’s possible to build space you can function in, and to build up your ability to function in more spaces. It’s often possible to get over triggers. All of this can take a lot of time and work, and can be a slow process. It doesn’t always make for a good story, and it doesn’t always play out the way others would like it to. And, it’s your own personal private business. Other people’s concern or curiosity does not obligate you to share details.

Survivors and victims have the right to be boring. We have the right to deal with trauma aftermaths in a matter-of-fact way, without indulging other people’s desires for plot twists. We have the right to own our own stories, and to keep things private. We have the right to have things in our lives that are not therapy; we have the right to needed accommodations without detailing what happened and what recovery looks like. Neither traumatic experiences nor trauma aftermaths erase our humanity.

We are not stories, and we have no obligation to advance an expected plot. We are people, and we have the right to be treated as people. Our lives, and our stories, are our own.

Ok that last post got me fired up so we’re gonna have a quick chat about queer history and respecting your elders.

Nothing makes me more angry then when I see some 14 or 15 year old kids try to talk over queer elders and tell them what they can and cannot say about themselves and about their community. 

The queer community has a long, painful, and constantly evolving history. From things like early lesbian couples and Boston Marriages to Stonewall to the AIDS crisis, a lot of shit has happened, a lot of identities have existed and a lot of words have been used. 

Remember that if you’re young right now, you grew up in a time completely different than that of queer elders. You didn’t live through this stuff but you’re coming into it and you’re expecting to bend it to your own thoughts and needs. And that’s ok, you’re allowed to want to better your community and you’re allowed to change things where you see problems.

The problem arises when you haven’t done your research. When you come into the community with no background in it and try to change things. When you don’t know what happened in the past, but you think it should change or you think you know how to change it. 

So story time.

I live in a very liberal dorm. A very queer liberal dorm. And each semester we have guests come speak to us about whatever they do. A couple semesters ago we had Kate Bornstein come speak to us. For anyone who doesn’t know, ze is a trans author. A much older trans author. And the entire trans club at my school decided to attend hir talk. An email was sent out by the LGBTQ resource center beforehand explaining that if people chose to attend the event, they should be aware that ze was older and probably had differing views and to take it with a grain of salt.

So I attended the talk and first of all Kate is the loveliest human. Just very sweet and ze really wants to help queer youth. But, yes, ze is a little different than say a trans 15 year old. Ze explained how ze likes to use the word tr*nny. Why? Because when ze was figuring hirself out ze found a group of other trans people who referred to themselves that way and it felt like a family. Tr*nny became a family word. However, people in the audience immediately started questioning her on this. And being rude about it. 

So my takeaways from this are essentially that this was carried out horribly. First of all, I find it cringe worthy that the trans club felt the need to tell us to “take it with a grain of salt” and I found it cringe worthy that these kids fought a trans elder on zir own life story. 

Why? because this wasn’t a lesson in being queer now. This was a lesson in queer history. This was a person talking about what it meant to be queer in the past and educating us on where our community came from. And that’s important.

You don’t get to tell queer elders who they are. They know who they are and what they’ve been through far more than you do. You need to sit down and learn your history before you try to tell a queer elder what it means to be queer and what words they can and cannot use. Because you know damn well that if anyone tried to take your words away from you it would hurt. 

TL;DR: the queer community has a history, please learn it before you try to shit on it

If you need educating, please read And the Band Played On by Randy Shilts and Odd Girls and Twlight Lovers by Lillian Faderman. They’re a good start, but there’s always more to learn, please don’t stop.

it always shocks me that people still to this very day think Komaeda is a selfish, delusional, crazy liar like this kid:

- Waited for a kid who had a panic attack and blacked out upon being thrust into a stressful situation, when no one else did, and offered to lead him around to make sure he was accustomed and okay.

- Has the whole liar disease when his personalty is reversed to show us he’s not a liar, which I’m like, 65% sure why the despair disease was even conceived of by the writers in the first place.

- Has an entire section where you play as him (which is unprecedented in DR) just to show you that no, he is definitely not a liar and fully believes in the righteousness of what he’s doing.

- Decided to sacrifice himself for his classmates and risked his life when going into the FDR, without even telling anyone what he was doing so no one would stop him.

- Even after literally sacrificing his life for hope, still left behind enough critical evidence purposefully so that his classmates could maybe find out the truth, just in case they were worthy of it after all and to maybe save their lives even after, again, he had tortured himself and resigned himself to a slow, painful death.

- In Island Mode in general is mostly a considerate sweetheart, warning Hinata to stay away from dangerous things and trying to keep him safe whenever they’re together. (In the manga he even takes care of Hinata after Hinata gets sick thanks to his luck.)

- When he dreams of an ideal world, it is one where he has horrible, bad things happen to him, but good things happen to those he admires and cares for, that’s his heart’s literal truest desire.

- Tried to warn his classmates about going back to fight Kamukura and Enoshima without help, and yeah I know he said he was ‘just testing them.’ But that was clearly just him going along with what they had suggested, like he often says he’ll do in SDR2, because he doesn’t think his opinions and observations are worth much compared to Ultimates.

- Was so happy to see Kuzuryuu and Souda alive after his dream that he hugged them, even knowing that it was only dream because he cared about them so much.

- Komaeda Nagito is a naturally sweet boy who gets set off by stressful and strenuous situations, likely thanks to his  FTD and quite honestly likely thanks to some form of PTSD for all the death he’s seen and believes himself guilty of, when there’s no tragedy or conflict to set him off, he’s harmless and only viewed as strange or weird by his classmates, rather then dangerous. (Exempting Hinata of course.) 

- Literally he fell in love with the first person who tried to understand him wtf this boy is not evil or a psychopath.

First of all, I can do whatever I want. Second of all, I can do whatever I want. And third, I can do whatever I want.

Okay? Glad we established that. With that out of the way, I’m gonna be very clear with people like you who keep telling me and other people like what we should want, need and demand. 

Star has done a lot in terms of destroying gender roles and other stereotypes and taboos for kids and young people out there. Its characters are not flat and they have their own personalities, their own lives and agency, which don’t conform to gender norms as they have been force-fed to us by society. Breaking this kind of stereotypes is gonna be so liberating for so many kids. For example:

  • You don’t have to be girly to be a girl (Janna is into a lot of creepy and icky stuff usually considered boyish, just to mention someone)
  • Being feminine doesn’t define your gender (Marco, and I’m gonna get back to you on this)
  • Having trouble managing your anger does not make you a bad person (Tom. who is working so hard to keep it under control and improve because he wants to be better)
  • You can have a bunch of mixed, apparently contradicting traits, and that doesn’t make you less worthy of the gender you identify with (Star is very girly and likes cute stuff but still kicks ass and loves every second of it)
  • Boys can be affectionate with other boys (if we assume, based on what we know at the moment, that Marco identifies as a boy, and again, I’ll get back to you on that), and that’s okay (Marco and Tom, even though I still think the whole Friendenemies episode was very homoerotic)

I’m really grateful for this new wave of cartoons (such as Star vs The Forces of Evil, Gravity Falls or Steven Universe). Different shows are exploring different themes from different angles, and that doesn’t mean that one is necessarily above the other. Star may not be exploring queerness in full (like Steven Universe does, for example), more like touching upon its surface, but it is still playing a role in its normalisation.

Never did I say that the infamous 1-second gay kiss was good rep. For me to call it rep, I would need it to feature at least characters whose names we know. But you know what? I’m okay with it being something in the background and I don’t consider it gaslighting, because as far as I know, the show did not make a big deal out of it, they did not announce “Hey! We are giving you guys gay rep! Look at all the diversity we’re including!”. I actually heard nothing from the show-runners. It was the media that blew up and made a huge deal out of it because of some stupid parents’ reaction. The whole thing was a nice detail that acknowledged the existence of gay people and made an effort to normalise queerness by showing them doing something as mundane as going to a concert with their partners. Period.

And on that note, I want to add that yes, more than this is desirable and it’s okay (it’s very important, actually!) to ask for proper representation. But we can’t close our eyes to the stuff that’s already come our way just because it’s not as much as we wanted it to be. Things take time. Society is still coming to terms with LGBT+ people, and rushing them is only gonna make them clam up and reject any notion of it. Hell, parents wanted to take Star out of Disney XD because they were outraged by a 1-sec cartoon gay kiss! Even though I’m tired of waiting, I see that Disney is treading on thin ice with its more conservative audience and has to carefully plan its every step. And they are still making progress. Slowly, but surely.

We got Beauty and the Beast with gay LeFou (even though I still think it should have been the clock and the candelabra), despite the foreseeable boicot from many people. I’m not saying “we’re good, we can stop demanding stuff from show-runners and movie directors”, I’m saying, “let’s appreciate the progress we’re making while aiming for more”. We’ve come a long way since Disney’s massive no-homo when High School Musical gave a girlfriend to Ryan, literally the gayest man alive in the Disney Universe.

And about the “unnecessary heterosexual love triangle”: I dunno, anon, I’m a storyteller and I saw it coming for a long time. The show built up to that point. It’s not like they pulled it out of their asses. Would I have wanted it to be a love square featuring Tom? Why yes, absolutely, but oh well. It still makes sense in the story they’re telling and it’s integrated in the plot. It would have been weird if Marco, who had been crushing on Jackie since Day 1, had just moved on from her without thinking twice.

Yes, Marco has been shown as Princess Marco several times already, pronouns have been changed to feminine and nobody has questioned Marco’s new status during those times. However, Marco hasn’t expressed a particular preference for being treated as a girl (true, no preference for masculine treatment has been expressed either, so we’re kind of in a neutral zone I guess?). I mean, you see Marco wearing dresses and a wig with no complain, as well as being treated as a girl, but after that episode is over, you don’t really see Marco displaying any signs of discomfort with gender identity or pronouns or disphoria or gender expression or anything like that. Actually, the character’s development continues as it was before that happened (anybody else remembers that episode where Marco lives on a different dimension for 16 years and embraces every masculinity trope under the sun?).

Now I’m not saying you have to meet a bunch of requirements to be trans (I’m no trans gatekeeper), but these are the kind of things that usually give it away when we’re talking about someone else’s experience, since we are not inside their head. 

Yes, Marco does possess some traits traditionally associated with femininity (like spending hours getting ready for the date with Jackie), but they’re vague enough that they could mean something or nothing at all (like I said, the show does a lot to destroy gender roles). I feel like I can’t really call it for sure based on that. With how indifferent Marco seems to be to different pronouns, I’d actually say that there’s higher chances this character falls somewhere in the non-binary spectrum, rather than identifying as a girl. This is, of course, my personal opinion, and I might be wrong. But it goes to show that the hinting done in the show has been so subtle for now that it could go either way, and so, I fail to see why we should get angry that Marco isn’t being treated as a girl at the moment.

Absolutely!!! Beware though, I’m about to wax poetic because I LOVE these two characters. I’m sorry that this post is so long but I’m NOT putting it under a cut because I worked on this for over a fucking hour instead of writing my history paper and I want at least one person to actually read it. :P

I’m gonna go a little in depth with what I believe is their canon personalities according to my interpretation and then how I incorporate those interpretations into Texts From Dark And Anti. Some of you may be surprised to find that I actually heavily take their canonical personalities into account when I make my edits; it’s not all just dick jokes and memes for the sake of notes. Texts From Dark And Anti is my love letter to these two characters, and I’ve gone to great lengths to portray them in the best way possible.

But enough babbling. Let’s start with Dark.

CANON PERSONALITY: Master Manipulator and Sexual Predator

Per Mark, Dark is a master manipulator. He’s a snake in the grass, ready to tell you anything and everything you need to hear in order to get what he wants from you.

I’d argue that this often works for him. Obviously he’s a very good actor if he’s able to mimic Mark perfectly in the “Chocolate” ending, so that makes me think that he’s able to assume whatever personality and/or extend whatever favors he needs to to trick his victims into abiding by him.

But it’s also worth mentioning that Dark’s biggest weakness (arguably) is his jealousy. As Mark said, Dark’s extremely jealous of Mark, and he wants everything that Mark has: wealth, fame, success, and devoted fans. I’d be willing to believe that that last thing is what rubs Dark wrong the most.

Evidence? Mark’s fans are exactly what he goes after. Wanna know what’s freakier? IT FUCKING WORKED.

Mark took all of his fans out on a date. All of us adored him for it. Dark got jealous of this, so he infiltrated the date and tried to get us to support him instead. And when Tyler Mark showed up to fight him, Dark didn’t kill him himself. He manipulated us into doing it for him.

And what brings this home is that Dark has had the longest lasting potential out of anything to come out of this video. All of the other memes and references have lost their luster by now, but the resurgence of Dark-related fan art, ask/rp blogs, edits, and memes are still going strong. Dark infiltrated our date and convinced us to love him and worship him the same way that we do Mark, and we fucking fell for it.

So why does he do this? Is it just because he’s a jealous prick? Partially, but I think that, canonically, there’s more to it. I think it’s because he thrives on his ability to hold power over people, which is comparable to–get ready for it–sexual predators.

Dark exhibits a lot of the traits we normally attribute to these criminals. He’s attractive, charismatic, extremely manipulative, and sadistic. He says things like, “I can give you anything,” and, “If it’s dinner you want, I can provide.” Provide is an interesting word choice here, because that’s what society has dictated the man in a relationship should do. He even acts seductive: arching his neck, eye-fucking the camera, and he even blows us a kiss (see below). But the way that he grabs and shakes us periodically throughout his mental breakdown betrays his inner sadism and anger issues, also common among sexual predators. I absolutely think that based on Dark’s behavior and what we know about him, he’s totally down to fuck anyone and everyone in order to get what he wants–consensual or otherwise. And I definitely think he’ll enjoy it.

I wouldn’t necessarily say that Dark is a nymphomaniac. As an otherworldly being, it’s entirely possible he doesn’t even have a sex drive. But sexual predators don’t usually rape their victims just to get their dicks wet. Usually, it’s a power issue; they want to feel like they have mastery over something, and that they are dominant and in control. Given Dark’s obsession with taking all of Mark’s glory away from him, coupled with his violent mood swings and sadism, I would say that sexual assault is probably just one of the many ways he appeases his insatiable appetite for power and manipulation. And I’d even bet that it’s one of his go-to’s.

In Texts From Dark And Anti, I normally portray Dark as a bitter old demon who doesn’t understand memes and doesn’t want to put up with anybody’s shit. But I didn’t just do this for fun; I did it because I could see Dark being jaded in real life. Off-camera, when he’s not trying to seduce us into adoring him over Mark, I could see him being sick of being overlooked. He’s old, even by Mark’s channel’s standards, and up until “A Date With Markiplier”, he wasn’t mainstream in the fandom at all–not fun for someone who craves the adoration of others. So he’d definitely be off-put by Anti’s much younger, more erratic personality, and in a bad mood he’d bitch at him for it. But in a good mood, he’d use it to his advantage to get whatever he wants–sex, souls, and anything else his blackened heart desires, both for the reward and the thrill of not having to do it himself.

Now let’s talk about Anti.

CANON PERSONALITY: Chaotic Psychopath

Jack has been near-silent on his personal interpretation of Anti (although he’s stated that he definitely has a personal canon that he refuses to share, the little fucker), so all of this is going to come from speculation and what we see onscreen.

While Dark chose to make his debut in one long, continuous, elegant appearance, Anti showed up randomly throughout the month of October, with no prelude and no explanation as to why he was there. Also in contrast to Dark’s smooth, charismatic personality, Anti is visibly unstable, jittery, and psychotic. Both he and Dark exhibit bloodlust, but Anti doesn’t hide it. He doesn’t hold back any of his sociopathic tendencies, going so far as to murder his host on camera for the world to see.

We don’t exactly know what Anti’s agenda is, but that’s just it: I don’t think he has one. At least, not one beyond the psychotic urge to kill as much and as many people as he can. Even in “Say Goodbye”, all he does is laugh at/condemn the viewer for not warning Jack and saving him. The other times he was on camera in October, he was glitchy, with several different appearances (fangs, gauges, blood, etc.) and contorted, unsettling body movements, making me think that Anti is a supernatural being that thrives on chaos and bloodshed.

But  Anti doesn’t just want to cause havoc–he wants to cause havoc and get the credit he deserves for it. That’s why he showed up so much on camera without Jack noticing; he was there for us, not him. Then he made a big deal about us not telling Jack what was going on, condemning us for our failure to make his existence well-known. Then he crashed Jack’s panel at PAX, angry at us for “forgetting” him. He’s not trying to garner our support like Dark is; if anything, he wants us to be terrified of him.

But personally, if I had to choose between being locked in a room with Dark and being locked in a room with Anti, I’d choose Anti in a heartbeat. Because even though Anti is more obviously psychotic, at least I’d know I would be killed quickly–unlike Dark, who would torture and manipulate me verbally, physically, and possibly even sexually for an indeterminate amount of time. This is Anti’s downfall, I think; Dark disguises his true nature with seduction and charisma, but because Anti’s so unpredictable and surface-level, he identifies himself as a very obvious threat, ironically making him a little easier to understand.

Thus, my interpretation of him in Texts From Dark And Anti reflects this (albeit in a more comedic way). Anti loves memes and silly trends because he wants to stick out in a way that’ll gain recognition. He’s more up-to-date with Internet trends and slang because he’s much younger than Dark–but that also means that he’s more gullible, and a lot of simple things go over his head. Basically all of his emotions are double that of Dark’s, and he makes no efforts to disguise them. He’s also much more privvy to senseless murder than Dark. This speaks highly of his psychotic tendencies and general disregard for any order or secrets he could be bothering to keep. What you see of Anti is what you get: an easily-excitable, always-ready-to-fuck-shit-up killing machine.

So short version (I’ll try and write a post that explains what I actually mean some time in the future - but I can already feel that this post is going to be long).  my concerns about Harry’s music are quite personal.  I really value specificity in music and also fun/joy.  Harry’s interview further suggested that I probably couldn’t expect much of either of these things from his album.  I’d kind of figured that from SOTT and ESNY.  I don’t think joy or specificity are where he’s at as a songwriter - and I also think there is a lot about his position that would discourage joy (and even more so) specificity in songs.  I find the reasons that he might not be into joy and specificity in songs quite endearing and I have huge sympathy for them.  So it doesn’t necessarily change the way I respond to him as a person, but it will change the way I respond to his music.  And it does make me sad, for me, that the music he’s putting out won’t be the sort of music that most resonates with me.

The content vs. form thing of his interview is kind of a feature of the form itself.  Long celebrity interviews are this dance where the celebrity performs being accessible and intimate, while staying on brand and the journalist writes as if they’re revealing while also maintaining access.  To me there were these really jarring juxtapositions to the words Harry was saying and the form of the promo campaign that he was saying it.

So Harry says: “ “Who’s to say that young girls who like pop music – short for popular, right? – have worse musical taste than a 30-year-old hipster guy?” etc in his first in depth print interview with a magazine whose entire mission has been to uphold the supremacy of the 30-year-old hipster guy.  This venue and the interviewer were very definitely chosen to signal to those 30-year-old hipster guy that it was OK to like Harry.  On top of that Harry carefully and repeatedly uses the word honest - to signal to those readers that his music is better and more authentic now than it was in One Direction when those teenage girls liked him.

Or Harry says: “I feel like they were always thinking, ‘OK, this ride could stop at any point and we’re going to have to be there when it does.’ There was something about playing the album and how happy I was that told them, ‘If all I get is to make this music, I’m content. If I’m never on that big ride again, I’m happy and proud of it.'” While part of an incredibly highly controlled, high-stakes, promo campaign, designed to make him a solo superstar.

Now that’s really normal, that’s kind of a feature of this sort of interview.  But the impression I got from to the totality of the interview was not that Harry was not just carefully selling an image, but also quite mixed up about who he wanted to be and how he wanted to relate to people, mystery vs honesty and so on.  That this jarring juxtaposition wasn’t just a feature of the form of the celebrity, but also showing how ambivalent and unclear Harry was about all this stuff. 

In particular, it made me think of two different statements kind of about being seen.  One was Harry’s own, from a year in the making, “I want to be someone who doesn’t care what people think, but I just don’t think I am.” For me, everything about this promo campaign has demonstrated how much both of those things, wanting not to care, but really caring, are still absolutely true for Harry.

And the other was Jodie Foster’s coming out speech - which is a mess, but I’ve always thought a really profound mess:

…be a big coming-out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age, in those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually, proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met. But now I’m told, apparently, that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show. […] But seriously, if you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you’d had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too might value privacy above all else. Privacy.

I will continue to tell stories, to move people by being moved, the greatest job in the world. It’s just that from now on, I may be holding a different talking stick. And maybe it won’t be as sparkly, maybe it won’t open on 3,000 screens, maybe it will be so quiet and delicate that only dogs can hear it whistle. But it will be my writing on the wall. Jodie Foster was here, I still am, and I want to be seen, to be understood deeply and to be not so very lonely.

The juxtaposition between the really deeply felt desire for privacy and the just as deeply felt desire to be seen and understood really moved me when I first saw it and I thought she made it really clear that both could be true at the same time.  And I think the speech demonstrates that when you’ve been in the public eye as long as Jodie Foster, the two desires are impossibly intertwined.

I got the same desire and contradiction (although obviously not nearly as openly laid out - which is what makes Jodie Foster’s speech extraordinarily) from Harry’s interview.  

How could he feel anything else? He’s been exposed, told stories about, hidden and lied about.  How could he feel anything but a desire for privacy and a desire to be seen and understood.  How could he hope to untangle them, or even know how to act on them at his age?

And that made me very sad for him - because I want him to have it all.  I want him to be seen and understood and I want him to have all the privacy and space he needs.  And I think either will be very difficult for him to get, let alone both.

Why hating on MMA is bullshit.

A hobby of mine is to go onto sports pages of national significance and searching out MMA inspired posts to point out ignorance of MMA haters. I love doing it because they’re so ignorant to the rules and regulations. Here’s a few of my favorite things to say:  

“They get concussed all the time! Way too risky!”

 Boxers and rugby players have a higher rate of concussions, plus they play on. If a fighter is concussed the fights stopped. Perfect example below. Gus protecting himself, just not fighting back. Fight stopped.

 Actually no, its a mix of many disciplines that are all Olympic grade sports minus Jiu Jitsu. Their are many ringside doctors, cutmen, a referee that stops a bout when a fighter is not fighting back and strict state commissions that regulate the bouts.

 The gloves are the furthest thing from bare knuckled. 4 ounce gloves plus a hand wrap. They have to be that small for grappling. Boxing gloves are 20 ounces. Which sounds and according to ‘Fight Science’ is more painful to be hit with. Kicking is also used in MMA by most fighters.

Well, more than one has. Sheer fluke accidents happen in every sport, and MMA is actually one of the safest in regards of injury and death. You can get back up in boxing and can recover from being rocked. In MMA if you’re rocked you can get taken down and submitted or the referee will step in way earlier than a boxing referee would.

 Body shots, leg kicks, submissions. Your head is less at risk in MMA than in any other  large contact sport. Plus, similar to boxing, its all about someone finding your chin. Not your temple etc. less likely to be concussed in MMA than in  boxing.

MMA fighters are quite intelligent actually. Dominick Cruz has an IQ higher than most and is a very good analyst in all sports. The fighters have to train and remember how to execute a lot of holds and have to have the discipline to make weight. Simpletons isn’t even close.

I feel like tsukishima and yamaguchi are both terrible at communicating in different ways. I know tsukishima is one that’s usually considered bad at communicating (and I can totally see how) but please consider that yamaguchi…

  • has yet to share his internal turmoil about not being a starter with anyone
  • went off the team to an outside, rather unaffiliated adult for help instead of to his upperclassmen or teachers
  • shares more about tsukishima than he does about himself and subconsciously uses tsukishima as a social shield
  • clams up after losing to seijoh
  • held off on talking to tsukishima about real ass things that bothered him until his emotions boiled over and he ended up just screaming his emotions to his best friend in the middle of the night in a rather public place
  • (and as it turns out, tsukishima actually had no problems accepting yamaguchi’s words and heard him out with minimal resistance so all of yamaguchi’s internal reasons for not speaking up sooner just kind of flew out the window)
  • will 100% say nothing is wrong when everything is going to shit
  • has never ever verbalized his emotions in any serious context to any of his teammates
  • won’t talk to his best friend about Important Things™ sometimes because he’s afraid it’ll annoy him enough and he’ll presumably stop being friends with him despite not having any evidence supporting that theory
  • is super competitive but rarely shows it
  • is the kind of guy that you look back and realize you know very little about personally
  • is the kind of guy who blows up at people for not knowing things he didn’t actually communicate or suddenly bursts with boiled-over frustration and leaves you going “um where did that come from?”
  • apologizes the next day and insists you forget about it and that he’s just fine and nothing is wrong haha dw about it
  • has really only cracked jokes with tsukishima and (very recently) hinata
  • tends to dance around topics or questions that he doesn’t want to answer
  • sucks at communicating despite being so bubbly and talkative

Don’t get me wrong, tsukishima has his own issues with communication to be sure, but they’re different. Tsukishima simply refuses to communicate on important things 90% of the time, especially if the issue really bothers him because that’s getting into emotions and that’s not what he’s here for. He’s embarrassed and a bit awkward about sharing so he cages off instead, and he doesn’t do well with approaching people who don’t approach him first. But on the flip side, he seems to own his lack of skill better and has less hang ups about it. At the very least he doesn’t seem bothered when people don’t know much about him because no duh, how could they understand him or his feelings if he doesn’t share? That’s tsukishima’s take on it and he’s got it on the nose there. Also, when directly confronted or when he actually decides to open up by himself, tsukishima’s words are very honest and blunt and they invite little room for misunderstandings. 

Yamaguchi’s communication problems stem from a different place. He’s a great communicator… to an extent. Whereas tsukishima’s hang up is just that he’s a very private person who feels uncomfortable opening up, yamaguchi’s stems from the fact that he wants to but is simultaneously too embarrassed or afraid to. He’d like to both communicate how he’s feeling and keep his cards close to his chest, and since he can’t actually have it both ways his emotions end up being turned into some sort of ticking time bomb. He holds anything he feels is too important to share at bay until that’s no longer an option and he blows up at someone or something very suddenly. Like he kinda wants people to know about things but my god he doesn’t want to have to tell them. And even when he is opening up he’ll often stall or dance around the issue a bit. Yamaguchi is a good talker and he’s more of an extrovert than tsukishima, but that doesn’t make him a master communicator by any stretch of the imagination.

Hey friends! I just wanted to say that your posts on spies have been so useful to me. Anyway, I have a character who is an ex-soldier (infantry). For various plot reasons, he needs to infiltrate a very secretive group and gain info on them. He has a mentor, who is an intel agent. Question is: what would a crash course on infiltration look like? They don't have much time, and my solider is a very straightforward person and has some problems with deception. What does he need to know?

Well, one thing he really should not know, under any circumstances, is that his handler is setting him up as a sacrificial lamb for the other guys to capture and interrogate. A “spy,” who is bad at deception, and very straightforward? He has “doomed spy,” written all over him.

The Doomed Spy is a concept from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War. This is a spy you send in, explicitly, to be captured. They don’t know it, but their real job is to feed misinformation to the enemy, either through shoddy tradecraft or under direct interrogation. This could range from something as simple as a false flag operation, where the spy is told and believes they’re working for one nation or faction, when in fact, that entity has no knowledge of their actions, and their handler’s loyalties actually belong elsewhere. Or, it could be as complex as an entire operation, designed to provide the targets with false intelligence.

So, your ex-soldier, who’s bad at lying, and thinks he’s working for one group is, in fact, working for a completely different group that wants to provoke action against the people he’s (probably) loyal to. This may go a step further, where his handler recruits him, specifically because of his prior ties to the faction the handler claims to represent.

Something else that’s kind of important to understand about intelligence work, or at least direct human intelligence work. As a spy, your job isn’t to sneak into an office, or even talk your way in. Sometimes you need to be there personally, but most of the time, you can get someone else to do it for you. Why sneak into an office building, when you can pay a member of the cleaning staff to pass paperwork to the trash, where you can get someone to pick it up later?

At that point, there isn’t a lot of reason to train assets (the people a spy uses as intermediaries to get their information). In theory, they already know how to act in their native environment.

Getting someone into some kind of secret society is going to be a lot trickier, but at that point, your spy’s best cover may be going in as themselves. Okay, up front, this one’s a kind of weird situation, so let’s parse apart how this works.

Normally, a spy’s best option is to get other people to work for them. It creates a layer of insulation, so if something goes wrong, they can get out, and take any intelligence they’ve obtained, before the authorities manage to close in on them. This doesn’t always work, but, the separation between an actual spy and their assets is vital to effective tradecraft. It also means that the spy’s identity isn’t immediately known. There’s a huge jump between walking into a place, and having your face on security cameras, and getting some poor schmuck no one knows to do it for you. This also leads to a paradoxical situation with intelligence work. Spies tend to deal with their most immediately critical cases early in their careers, when no one knows who they are, and then spend the rest of their career working on much less important cases, when getting exposed would be less harmful.

What we have here sounds like a slightly different situation that doesn’t really pop up in the real world, where a spy’s anonymity wouldn’t work.

If we’re talking about some supervillain’s secret society, where they already have intelligence gathering on par with some nations, and have moles in your spy’s intelligence agency, then, as I said a minute ago, the answer may be to go in, “as themselves.”

With one exception, you wouldn’t likely see this in the real world, but a veteran spy, looking to infiltrate some kind of Illuminati/Majestic 12 style, “secret rulers of the world,” type conspiracy, may be better off poking them with a stick and asking for a job. They’d already know who the spy is, there’s no real point in pretending to be someone else. Their own skill set wouldn’t raise any questions when that’s who they’re supposed to be anyway. Once they’re in, they’d probably act as a sleeper (an agent who does not engage in any intelligence activities) to build up their cover, increase their access, and only act when they have the opportunity to fully achieve their goals, (which could take years).

Just to be clear, you could shove an entire series in here, about a spy who infiltrated some conspiracy, and is building their cover and working their way up through the ranks while wrestling with their ethics and what they’re having to do.

In that context, it’s possible they may pick an ex-soldier off the street to send in, in order to get the organization’s people knocking on their door.

In general, you’re not going to see this with national intelligence services, because no one trusts defectors. But, if you’re talking about an extra-national service, they don’t really have the option of producing their own talent (at least, not at first). They’d also be more likely to poach members of their host nations’ intelligence communities.

The one real world example where you might see a spy walking in the front door without a cover would be in dealing with businesses. Companies who are concerned about corporate espionage have a real incentive to hire former intelligence officers as security consultants and advisors. At the same time, this isn’t an extremely likely outcome for a couple reasons. First, private sector jobs like this are a very lucrative gig for ex-civil servants, meaning going after one would be biting the hand that (would have) fed them. Second, they’d still be in competition with other ex-intelligence officers for the position, people with the same kinds of training they received, which would make getting in tricky. Finally, when it comes to the business world, you rarely need a spy; it’s overkill. Most of the things a business gets into would be better suited for investigation by normal law enforcement channels.

Come up with a situation where a spy would need to tear into a company’s actions, and they’d benefit more from directing police action against it, rather than going in directly.

In all of this, I don’t think I’ve answered the direct question. The kind of videogame, sneaking in through the vents, infiltration approach doesn’t (usually) work. Infiltration, in the real world, is more about walking in and looking like you belong there, not hiding behind crates and climbing the drainpipes. (Somewhat obviously, this isn’t going to work out for your straightforward ex-soldier who has hang-ups about lying to people.) The biggest lessons are in social engineering. Learning how people function (psychologically), and exploiting inherent vulnerabilities in “normal” social structures.

Social Engineering often gets broken down into individual tricks, that play with expectations, for example: using a business card as false identification when making an introduction. This would never get you through a security checkpoint, but it might get you in the building to talk with someone, and give you access to information they normally wouldn’t.

As a gestalt, social engineering is fairly complex, but the basics are looking for ways to get people to give you information they really shouldn’t, by making them think you’re someone who is supposed to have access.

But, that’s what a spy’s job is, getting people to tell you things they shouldn’t, usually by misdirection and deception.

Two films that come to mind in this specific genre which may be worth watching are The Recruit, and Spy Game.

The Recruit (2003) focuses on a programmer (Colin Farrell) who is tapped by the CIA to become an agent, and the film spends a lot of time working through the training of prospective CIA Officers.

Spy Game (2001) focuses on a retiring CIA Officer (Robert Redford) discussing the training and career of his protégée (Brad Pitt). To a degree, this is probably the most on point to what you’re after, so if you’ve never seen it, it should be part of your lit review.

As always, Burn Notice’s, “when you’re a spy” routines may also be useful. The show spends a lot of time on social engineering (though it rarely uses the term). The discussions on how people normally behave, and how to work around, or exploit, their expectations are what you’re looking for.

You may also want to pick up and watch Ronin (1998). This is more about veteran spies interacting, but it has a very slick approach to tradecraft that may be useful.

James is pretty sure he’s been in love with Lily Evans since the beginning of fifth year but then he realises that’s not love because you can’t love someone you don’t know. Then the Incident happens and he doesn’t know how he feels and Lily is even more in the dark because they were friends except for when he was a cock but now all she feels when she looks at him is burning burning burning.

The summer cools her off and she doesn’t expect him when she gets back. Well, she does, she just doesn’t expect so much of him. He’s grown, again, and she’s not sure if he’ll ever stop, and it suits him. There’s less tripping and squeezing under desks. Finally, he seems able to actually control all of his limbs. He can’t control his eyes though. James finds them wandering to her during lessons, lunch, once even a quidditch match. She’s so easy to spot with wine red hair and eyes which don’t seem to want to meet his, but do anyway. She keeps noticing things about him, things that weren’t there before. Or maybe she just never let herself notice them before? It happens all the time and she hates that she loves it.

It’s easy. Being friends. Like picking up a book your mum used to read to you at bedtime. You think you’ve forgotten the words, but they all come flooding back. That’s how it feels. To have his arm over her shoulders, to duel with him in DADA, to steal toast from his plate, to save the strawberry botts for her, to watch him and only him on the pitch, to share Potions notes, to throw parchment notes at each other in History of Magic, to borrow his scarf, to hold her hand to help her across boggy Scottish soil. All of it, everything - it’s natural.

People start assuming they’re together. They stop being Lily Evans and James Potter and become Lily and James, addressed as one. Sirius rolls his eyes and becomes bitter, interrupting conversations and not moving to allow Lily a seat. Mary and Marlene giggle and wink at her whenever she sits besides him, the traitorous gits. Everyone knows something is up. Except for them.

Then it’s summer again and he’s so far away and she’s too far away and they write. They write too much to go unnoticed, by friends and then by parents. Mrs Evans try to be nonchalant as she asks who all these owls are from. Mr Potter ruffles James’ hair when Sirius points out that James is spending more time replying to letters then he is playing quidditch. There’s talk of meeting up, but it never happens. Lily never quite manages to draw up the courage to tell James which bus route to take. James always fails to write down where the spot for apparating to is. So they go all summer never seeing each other, except in familiar g’s and friendly scribbles which Lily has to spend ages deciphering into something legible.

September comes and they’re both wearing their badges and neither one is surprised but both are slightly hurt the other didn’t mention it. Excuses are useless so they just say well done and attempt to organise the prefects, even though Remus spends the whole meeting making suggestive gestures at one of them when the other isn’t looking. And nothing has changed. Except James is taller, again, and Lily’s hair is shorter and her boobs are bigger (but James definitely hasn’t noticed that), but they’re the same. No one blinks twice when they’re the only two left in the common room. Everyone is used to seeing them together, heads bent close, people uncertain if they’re discussing rotas or the latest transfiguration journal. It becomes customary that if Lily’s the only one on a sofa, the other half is reserved for James. If James falls asleep with her head in her lap, there’s nothing unusual about it.

People call them a couple and they don’t think to correct them, not having discussed it but sort of knowing anyway. She kisses him goodbye outside the Three Broomsticks once, a peck on the cheek, the Marauders going onto Zonko’s and the girls visiting Honeydukes. He blushes but she doesn’t and then that’s a thing too. It doesn’t take long before the kisses are on the forehead, the nose, the lips. Always gentle, quick and not really anything of note except, every time lips brush skin, their hearts race faster. So no one’s surprised when, with the excuse of mistle toe, a short and swift kiss becomes a long, soft and languid one. (Until Peter throws a cushion at them.)

They’re dating, going out, boyfriend and girlfriend. They’re every synonym for together and they’re happy. Every inch of them says ‘I love you’, but they never say it. And then they do. And it just happens, and their hearts beat faster, and their breath comes short, but they’re not surprised. They know, everyone knows, how could they not be in love? James says it first, casually and then not casually at all. Lily says it back, into his neck, his lips, his heart, both of them smiling like they’ve been given the sun on a string.

So they’re in love and it’s a shred of light in a world which keeps getting extinguished around them. They’re not sure how or when it happened but it did and when they have nothing they have each other, because that’s just how it is.

If u don't use ot4 or ot5 to denote whether something was before or after Zayn left or whether a gif/photo contains all 5 boys vs 4 because it was after March 2015, then what do you use for tagging?? Or like, if it was up to u what would u want everyone to tag things as?

Oh, it’s much deeper than tagging.  It’s really the issue of the fandom either A) not thinking critically at all, or B) being hypocritical about what they apply logic to.  It’s also about people, no matter what they think happened (Zayn’s leaving wasn’t fishy vs. Zayn’s leaving being super fucking fishy), being willing to immediately believe the worst about someone they should already know the true good character of.

In more specific terms, it’s about the fandom buying everything the media and the narrative says about Zayn without valuing logic and the things Zayn says from his own mouth more.  It’s about fans willfully interpreting everything related to Zayn as negative, deciding they have a grudge against him because of those perceived “slights”, and then erasing and demonizing him in equal measure.

To state a surprising truth, there isn’t a single person in this fandom that believes everything the narrative says about One Direction.  They probably think they do, but they don’t.  I’ve seen people who constantly mock the idea of a narrative or a constructed media image and yet they still push back when the boys are said to be dating someone that’s not confirmed, said to have been rude, said to be doing odd things (sheep placenta facials anyone?), said to have a bad relationship with each other, said to be violent or on drugs, etc.  

The thing is, people THINK they believe everything is simple and truthful, but at a basic level, they have their own beliefs about who the boys are based on what they’ve seen in interviews.  If those conflict with what they’re told, they scoff at what’s being fed to them.

This is fact and yet a large chunk of the fandom had very little problem turning around and believing everything bad the media said about Zayn, even when the things he himself said and did were so different from that.  

“so grateful” and “loved what we did as a boyband”

“I don’t think I woulda done anything different”

“there was no contingency” and “my band’s been really supportive, they’ve been really cool about it”

“it was nice to look back at the memories we shared together” and “ok, you’re saying that” (this requires tone interpretation, but his tone is “don’t agree, yeah, ok, whatever, shut up” rather than “I agree with you and I’m being coy about it”)

“you don’t want to feel that you’re being lied to, not that I was lying, it’s just that them songs didn’t really fit my style of singing, so I wasn’t really 100% confident in the way that I was singing back then”

What Zayn said in person didn’t at all match up with the headlines the newspapers kept running and the words they kept putting in his mouth.

A specific example is this whole thing that people believe Harry and Zayn have a problem when NEITHER. HARRY. NOR. ZAYN. EVER. SAID. A. BAD. WORD. OR. SHOWED, SIGNS. OF. TENSION.  

I can understand believing Louis and Zayn fought a little bit more (even though evidence suggests the Twitter fight was all a planned show), but the only things that ever happened with Harry and Zayn were some BS news articles with no source and Harry making a few jokes about the unnecessary tension and glee the interviewers had when talking about Zayn.  

Up until the very last show Zayn was at, he and Harry were acting normal and close. Even after Zayn’s last show, Harry was right there with the other boys in leaving space for Zayn on stage.  Even after THAT, Harry was involved in things that referenced Zayn in a positive way.

There is NO basis for believing there’s an issue between Zayn and Harry, yet the fandom believes it because it’s what the press has said.  They apparently want to believe it since there’s been little to no pushback.

This is my problem with group A.

My problem with group B is all of that plus they DO know how to see everything I’m pointing out; they know and they choose not to bother with it if it doesn’t apply to Harry and Louis.  That’s even worse.  There’s no way to miss what’s going on since it’s entangled with the other boys.  It’s even harder to miss since there’s a good core of bloggers here that always gather evidence, do the hard legwork, and make posts about it.  

With the ability to reason, there should only be 2 divisions in fandom: those who believe the narrative no questions asked and those who don’t.  Instead, there are those who believe the narrative no questions asked, those who believe it about some and not others, and those who question and examine everything.

“OT4″ and “all 4 boys” are heavily associated with the erasure of Zayn from the band- even the pre-March 25 band-, the degradation of Zayn’s character, failures of logic, gross hypocrisy, and the diminishment of the amazing bond OT5 share.  

I understand and acknowledge that not all people using it have those intentions or participate in those actions (which is why it doesn’t bother me as much when people I follow and know have good intentions use it), but so many do that it leaves a terrible taste in my mouth every time I see it.  Zayn’s career prospects, personal desires, name, and reputation have been so unfairly and so badly abused that the injustice of it makes me furious. Anything connected to it makes me furious and that’s why “OT4″ and “all 4 boys” has that affect on me.

It’s not something I’m expecting everyone would use, but @paynoisbatman uses “zayn’s boys” when there are 4, or “liam’s boys” if Liam’s the one missing, etc.  It’s a great way of showing that the missing member is still important and is still part of the love all 5 share.  When it comes to “all 4 boys”, you simply have to drop the “all”.  It might take a tiny bit more typing, but it’s worth it to represent the situation accurately and honor the contributions of and bond between all 5.

I just finished LOT season 1 and rewatched season 1 of the flash and something really bothered me - Mick Rory. In the flash we see him as someone who is able to lear how his gun works and able to work out the plans etc. Len is the mastermind ofc but Mic wasn't just the muscles. And we had Mick Rory at the begining of LOT aka IQ of meat. The difference really bothered me and only after the chronos deal we see him back to "inntelect levels" like in the Flash. Do you have thoughts on that?

I actually don’t think Mick’s IQ appears to dip at the start of Legends, to be honest. Second episode, with Len and Ray breaking into Savage’s house, he’s there berating Ray alongside Len and also completing Len’s sentences, going to fix the situation before Savage gets a hold of him. He’s shown right off the bat to be competent and underestimated.

Which is what it is, in my opinion. He’s constantly underestimated by the team, and with them constantly calling him and idiot or acting like he’s the slow one, the audience starts to believe it, when it couldn’t be farther from the truth. He might not be a scientific genius like some of the team, but he’s probably the most competent in terms of base skills and also easily the most practical. He has multiple types of intelligence that are underrepresented on the team because of how different he is than most of them, but it’s seldom appreciated or pointed out in canon.

Another pre-Kronos example? How he knows what Druce is up to and warns Rip that Druce is going to kill him. Interpersonal intelligence, down to earth, great at reading a situation. Actually, he has some of the highest interpersonal understanding on the team. He always reads a situation and sums it up perfectly, often the first to recognize what’s going on, if he’s being insulted, if someone else is being threatened or insulted, how to get under people’s skin, etc. He doesn’t always do what you’d expected him to with the knowledge, but he sees it and understands him. I’d say he and Sara are pretty equal in this regard.

More examples of him being smart though? He always knows what Len is talking about and easily goes along with plans intuitively without much explanation. Reads between the lines immediately when Len wants to make an extra pit stop with the jump ship in episode 3. Follows orders to the t and keeps things moving on all of their early missions up to and including in Russia. Knows what to do with the pirates when they’re locked up in that cell and how to make a deal and sort out of the situation. He’s the only one who even thinks of making a deal with the pirates and knows how to do it.

And when he’s called out for not being “thick” by Rip early on? He immediately pretends to be dumb again. Yes, pretends. Because I’ve argued before that him being the ‘muscle’ to Len’s ‘brain’ is mostly just an act they fall in to, especially around others, and it works. They managed to stay one step ahead of most people around them at all times.

It’s also worth saying… the way Mick sees the world? Is a bit different than most people, I think. He sees it in very practical terms of what can be used and how, regardless of that was it’s intended function, or regardless of whether that was someone’s intended skill set. Think of the recent scenes with Martin where he asks Martin to fix his brain. Martin complains that he’s not that kind of doctor but Mick doesn’t care. I mean, he says “same thing” basically, but he understands that Martin isn’t a neuroscientists logically, he gets that Martin is a physicist. He just doesn’t care because it’s not relevant.

What is relevant is that Martin is smart enough and knows enough about what’s happening to him to help him with it, neurologically. So at that point in time, the distinction between PhD and MD doesn’t matter and he expresses that. Some people interpret that as him being less than intelligent, but I’d say it’s more accurate to read that as him just keeping different categories in his head than most of us are used to.

Finally, I don’t think we need to value a person based on their IQ or intellect, and I don’t think that a high IQ would ever be the best thing another person could have to offer a team already comprised of so many geniuses. But I also don’t think it’s necessarily accurate to say that Mick’s changed? He’s always been super competent, that’s always been underestimated by the team (and most people really), and he’s always been much sneakier than he’s given credit for :)

Something I've been confused about for months is the people saying that Cursed Child is a queerbait. I only guess I don't understand the term properly because I thought it meant that writers teasing that a character was gay and then not delivering? Albus/Scorpius were close but it wasn't like they were definitely hinted as being gay and then it was pulled away? There's something I'm missing? I thought you would be ok to ask and explain if you knew?

I must stress that this really is my own personal opinion; I’m really not trying to upset anyone with my train of thought on this…it’s really just how I see it from my own perspective.

Albus, Scorpius and Scorbus really deserves its own post - but I’m going to deviate slightly, because the issue with the ‘queerbait’ in Cursed Child for me isn’t completely about Albus and Scorpius.  

Their relationship, whether romantic or brotp, is beautifully written, and depicts two teenage boys in a very different fashion to what we saw in the original series (e.g. Harry and Ron’s brotp).  It’s beautiful, it’s kind, it’s caring and it’s loving.  And it’s perfectly fine if it did evolve into Scorbus, but it’s also equally fine for it to be a deep friendship between two people without any romantic or sexual element.

The issue with queerbaiting and the Potter franchise is complicated.  I lived through Section 28 - and there is no way on this planet that anyone could’ve written an explicitly queer character in those first few books back in the late 90s.  I fully appreciate that Harry Potter is of its time - and its time is a moment when the UK was very uneasy with the issue of sexuality, particularly representations that were aimed at children.

However, the end of Harry Potter came at a time where there was a huge social shift.   Our society came on leaps and bounds between the 1990s and the 2000s.   As the series was wrapping up, we had legislation to protect us, civil partnerships - and then incredibly, recently, we gained marriage rights.  

That’s all brilliant - but it dates Potter horribly.  You read it now, you look at it and think, “Wow, there’s no queer representation in here at all.”  But y’know, I’m sure we’re all mature enough to look at the front and say, “Ah, published in 1997!  No wonder!”

But Cursed Child was published in 2016.  Cursed Child was published years after JK told us Dumbledore was gay.  Cursed Child was published years after this:

…but yet again, we’ve gone through a whole book without a single character who is clearly queer.

The issue, as I see it, isn’t so much that people are solely disappointed/sad/upset/angry that Scorbus wasn’t a thing…but that they as queer fans nodded their heads during those early years and said, “It’s ok, there’s nothing JK could’ve done - she couldn’t have written us some representation in the books; her hands were tied.”

…but now? 

If I was being generous, I suppose there’s an argument that any Potter book is going to sell in huge numbers.  The play was less certain, and perhaps they were advised against featuring any queer characters lest it affect how the play was received.  Perhaps.

I also suppose there’s an argument that JK has stated that she sees Dumbledore as gay, and there’s a Fantastic Beasts series in the pipeline, and it could be that she’s decided to write her queer representation in that instead.

But at the end of the day, there’s an awful lot of queer kids who grew up with the series who felt they had to nod their heads and say, “It’s ok, I understand why you can’t show me,” - and that was hard enough in 1997, frightfully difficult in 2007…but doing so in 2017 feels ridiculous.

So, to answer your question, it’s not really that Albus and Scorpius were coded as queer and then turned out not to be (admittedly, they are certainly coded very differently to a lot of male brotp pairings that we see in the media, which possibly made it more difficult…at times it did feel as if there was more to it than just a friendship)…

…but it’s almost that the franchise sort of whispered that us queer kids were part of it, and we all secretly understood why it couldn’t say it out loud…but right at the moment that it was given a platform and a golden opportunity to prove it stood with us, it backed out.

The answer to your first question or two is simple, while the last one is more complicated.

To answer why he betrayed Aelin or summoned Maeve, can be long or short. The short answer was that he actually had no loyalty to Aelin and he was trying to protect Elide.

The longer answer is that when he summoned Maeve, it was at a point in time where he thought that there was a ship full of enemies come to kill/capture them. They had just used all of their power fightings so they would have absolutely no chance of succeeding. Lorcan has been abused for the past 100 years plus some, in these years the relationships he has had have been surface level or based around survival.

Elide is the first individual to ever really mean something to him or show him affection, probably in his whole life

. His being is centered around that.

All he has ever tried to do is protect and fight for himself, those are really the only skills and emotional capacity he has developed. So when he began caring for Elide, Gaverielsthose transferred onto her.



Now, we have seen that he does display loyalty to the cadre. This is rare and hard to come by, but we see it when he ran to help Aedion in QoS simply because he was Gavriel’s son. These loyalties come from years of surviving abuse and trauma together, though that does not change that Lorcan never developed or had a loving relationship (once or twice if at all), but he did respect this cold, but loyal, survival kinship with the cadre. Calling Maeve would not endanger them since they were all sworn to her anyway besides Rowan. As for Rowan, we see that Lorcan felt a deep betrayal at Rowan leaving with Aelin. Rowan was the closest thing Lorcan had to an actual friend, he actually felt close and connected to him over all the other cadre members. This was because Lorcan is almost, if not as, powerful as Rowan so they were often sent on missions for months together. Rowan was the closest thing he ever had to family, a brother. And Rowan just left Lorcan with Maeve, without so much as a backward glance. Before, Rowan was grief stricken and cold like Lorcan. He felt comradery to him. Then Rowan left him to become more emotional, feeling, and to have a court, a family, with other people. This genuinely was both a physical, relational, and emotional betrayal of sorts for Lorcan. While I certainly do not blame Rowan or think he should not have done anything differently, that does not mean we wouldn’t expect Lorcan to react this way. We often see this with people in real life. Trauma victims or abusive victims, when someone else gets out or moves on with their life, while we would hope that most would be happy for the individual, others might feel a sense of abandonment.

And Lorcan, cold and abused, had no moral reason for serving Maeve. She was just a way to achieve status, a way to not be the prey in life and instead be the hunter. Lorcan operates on a kill or be killed mentality, as all his life experience has told him to. It was a survival decision to join Maeve. He says himself, he cares not about the actual battles or why they are doing the things they do, he is so depressed and traumatized that he simply just exists. So, he could care less personally about Aelin and the goodness she represents. He has no personal ties to her, he has only talked to her maybe three times in his life.He only knows himself and Elide when it comes to base instinct. She is the first person to move into his circle of survival, the first time he really has an active role in someone else’s fate. She breached those walls. So when he thought they were under attack, his first instinct and thought are to try to find some way to save himself, and the first person he has come to really care about or have. He barely even thought, he just reacted on a base survival need. He might have paused if this resulted in the death of his cadre, but they were on the same side as him. And while I do not think he wished any harm particularly to Aelin, Rowan, and their court, he was not going to choose them over himself and Elide, nor the cadre, who are his brothers in arms of sorts. 


As for why he was devastated that Maeve cut the bond, there is a long list of complicated emotions he was probably feeling. One is simply shame. The culture in throne of glass is very different from where I live or where most people live in today’s world. It is very much based on visible status, etiquette, titles, and honor.  Maeve cut his blood oath in the most dishonorable way she could think of. Lorcan was a street bastard, the lowest you could get in society. The main reason he even took the blood oath was so that he could have a name so he could be something in his world and society. Now, not only has he returned to nothing after years of abuse and torture and trauma, but he also has added dishonor. He basically just became an outcast homeless person.
And the abuse. That I think is the primary reason he reacted the way he did. For 100s of years, Maeve has been in his mind, perverted his actions, forced him to do and endure terrible things. basically ruled his entire existence. He can barely remember the world without Maeve. It’s the same concept you see when sex trafficking victims who have been rescued try to return to their captors, why domestic violence victims lie to law enforcement and say they aren’t being abused, why kidnapped victims will fight and defend their captors against law enforcement trying to rescue them. Brainwashing, Stockholm syndrome, confusing their identity, making their abuse and their captors become essential to their survival, whatever you want to call it. HIs brain, his emotions, who he is is so confused and traumatized; everything he was is wrapped up in and depended upon Maeve. He had nothing and no one before her, this way of life was his only known reality. He does not know what or who he is without it. And when Maeve displayed displeasure and anger, the only way his mind knew how to react was to try to please her, beg forgiveness, and the fear of losing the only life and ways he understands caused him to try to hold onto that as much as possible.

It is very hard to understand or relate to unless you have gone through it yourself or know someone who has. And that’s okay, that’s understandable. Trauma and abuse are horrible things and are very hard to overcome. To anyone who may not be aware of why he would do this, it seems pathetic and confusing. 

I hope these answered your questions. 

And to anyone out there who may be going through abuse or have been traumatized, know that there is help out there and that it is not hopeless. I cannot imagine all you are going through, but there are people out there who have been through it as well. I escaped emotional abuse in high school, and life has gotten significantly better.   • even though you trip over something like 5 times an hour, he still flips his shit every time
  • he’d grab your arm and get super concerned
  • “MC!!! are you okay???”
  • “uh, yea, i’m fine! just gotta brush it off haha”
  • his hands hover over you for a second before going back to walking normally
  • “alright…are you sure?”
  • “yes, yes, im sure-”
  • this is when you trip for a second time curse this uneven sidewalk
  • and Yoosung does the same ridiculously protective thing where he puts his hands out to catch you, even though you know full well how to stop yourself from falling down after years of being clumsy
  • he really wishes he could wrap you up in bubble wrap
  • and Yoosung is pretty clumsy himself
  • sometimes while he’s cooking his spoon will just fall on the ground and he’s just kind of like “well there goes that”
  • you love to cook together but theres also a very high chance that most of the food will end up on the ground

Zen

  • your clumsiness is a big source of stress for him
  • every time you  fall off of a chair, or almost fall flat on your face in public he has a tiny heart attack
  • once you two were on a jog in the park and you fell and scabbed your knee and Zen really almost took you to the hospital
  • it takes him awhile to learn that clumsy people are actually tough as shit, yknow from years of being beat up by the ground

  • she essentially becomes the most prepared person on the planet
  • she starts carrying around a full-blown first aid kit in her purse
  • she’s got band aids of all shapes and sizes, medical tape, gauze, alcohol rubs
  • instead of worrying about catching you as youre falling, she just worries about patching you up afterwards
  • at first she tried to stop it while it was happening
  • but Jaehee quickly learned that you’re a lost cause and there is no way humanly possible to stop you from falling over
  • also, Jaehee doesnt let you bring coffee to customers anymore
  • lets just say you’ve broken multiple mugs and pissed of one or two costumers
  • so you make the coffee and she carries it out
  • she knows from experience that usually your klutzy episodes wont end in a serious injury, so she just lets you live your life and keeps band aids on hand

Jumin

  • you’ll never forget the first time you were eating dinner with Jumin and you slipped out of your chair
  • he was at your side so fast, holding your hands
  • you were laughing at yourself, and when you looked up and saw how concerned he looked, you laughed even harder
  • “are you alright? how are you feeling? do i need to call an ambulance?”
  • you were laughing so hard you couldnt even answer him, but for some reason he was still convinced that you were seriously hurt
  • he takes out his phone with one hand while still holding yours with the other, and you started pulling on him to try and stop him
  • “im…fine…”
  • “theres no way you’re fine. it sounded like something broke”
  • everything that comes out of his mouth makes you laugh even harder

  • “what happened there? the ground whispered to you and you had to get closer to hear it?!”
  • the one time he trips over something you go HAM on his ass
  • you dont let him live it down for the rest of his life
  • one time he actually wrapped you in bubble wrap
  • like you were sitting at the computer and he sneak attacked you and essentially tied you to the chair with a wide layer of bubble wrap
  • he thought it was a good idea but since you couldnt use your arms he had to wait on you hand and foot
  • it was a terrible day for him but a great day for you
  • “i swear from now of im just gonna let you fall over…”

Stiles listens to his dad ask him the same question that comes up way too often, and gets lost counting the dark flecks that scatter across the white expanse of the all-too-familiar hospital ceiling. Here again, and ‘He’ll be fine,’ the doctor says.

His dad wants to hear it from Stiles’ lips, though. Is he okay?

Is he really okay?

His answer doesn’t come as easily as it used to, no quip or snap back like it’s easy come easy go. The feckless lie sticks in the back of his throat, burning away like a hot coal choking the life out of him.

I’m fine.

He’s said it more than a million times, and no super-hearing anybody has heard his heart skip a single beat. Or maybe they did, but that thought doesn’t make it any easier, because that means they’ve ignored it a million times, too. And it should be easy, he’s brilliant at lying straight to his father’s face these days. Stiles knows how to twist a definition to make it true, how to believe in nothing and make it something.

He’s fine.

Molehills out of mountains.
Tip of the iceberg.

Shrink it down until it’s just an ember, a single flicker of pain low in his chest. It burns enough to remind him that it’s there, but cool enough for him to force the words out.

He stops counting the tiny holes in the ceiling, and plasters a bright, brilliant lie across his face.
