In Supersizing Urban America, history professor Chin Jou chronicles how the federal government made it easier for minorities to open fast-food franchises in low-income neighborhoods, rather than grocery stores. Today the landscape of urban America reflects this history: There’s a fast-food restaurant within walking distance in many low-income neighborhoods, but nary a green leafy vegetable in sight.

Urban neighborhood in Berlin-Neukölln. Neukölln is Berlin’s 8th borough, located in the southeastern part of the city. It features many Gründerzeit buildings and has a high percentage of immigrants. As of 2010, it had a population of 310,283, of whom 121,000 (~40%) were of non-native origin. Turkish, Arab, and Kurdish communities make up about 18% of the population. More recently, there has been an influx of Romani and Sub-Saharan Africans. Another trend is the rapid gentrification of neighborhoods, where the influx of students, creatives and young professionals of mostly Western origin has caused some tension with long-time residents.

‘god bless america and all the beautiful women in it’ is literally the most comforting song I’ve ever heard, it makes me think of west side story or the warriors, just that oldie urban neighborhood at night with vivid colors, and there’s a mother drying clothes on the balcony and a kid gang skateboarding down the street and it’s bustling a little and feels like a community, and you’re safe and loved I don’t know how she and her producers managed to capture the epitome of what America should be but they did it and it’s otherworldly!!
