[Improv] makes you work with people better, just in general. And I don’t mean like work like at a job—just interact with people better. I keep going back to the same word “listening,” but it really is just that.
“When I was in high school I was a really huge ‘SNL’ fan. I remember the cast around the time I started watching it - Will Ferrell, Ana Gasteyer, Molly Shannon, Cheri O'Teri, Tracy Morgan. I did research to find out how people got on the show. Their bios always said they came from an improv team, so I started taking classes.” - Aubrey Plaza
Back in the day, Seth Morris and Ed Helms did a monthly talk show in which they would interview guests as themselves, but in puppet form.
That night, Jason Mantzoukas was interviewed, and took the form of that wolf puppet on the left. When the interview turned to dating, Manzoukas asked the ladies in the audience about having sex on the first date. As the audience clapped, he slooooowly creeped out behind the puppet stage to see who was clapping in response to his question.
I didn’t know who he was at the time, but this was the definitive moment I became a fan of him.
Last night was the season finale of House of Lies and if you watched, you saw that everything has exploded. The entire show is up in the air which is incredibly exciting. What better way to celebrate the show than to watch the live improv comedy special we all did for Showtime a few months ago. Enjoy House of Lies Live, shot at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles with Don Cheadle, Kristen Bell, me, Josh Lawson, Lauren Lapkus, Ryan Gaul and Eugene Cordero. Everything in this video was made up on the spot. Enjoy and share it with your friends so hopefully I can put together more of these long form improv shows for TV! The YouTube clip above has all of the curses bleeped out, to watch the uncensored version, find the special on Showtime On Demand or ShowtimeAnytime and enjoy all the profanity in the universe.

I love improv so much. Listening. I think that’s the key. When you improvise, you put a lot of pressure on yourself to create, and to be generating information, and trying to be funny, but if you just listen to what’s being said to you, and then react honestly, you generally get better results.
If such a thing could be tallied, I’d wager the people in this photo with me, both individually and in various combinations, have made me laugh for literal hours. If not days.
Tonight I was asked to do monologues for the ASSSCAT show on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre on Franklin Avenue in Los Angeles. I was honored to do so. The UCB Theatre has brought so much joy and friendship into my life. I am grateful for its existence!
Thanks to everyone on the UCB staff and in the community for always making me feel simultaneously like a superstar and just part of the family. LONG MAY YOU REIGN.
