The wonderful Manhattan Magazine asked me to write an article about how much I love New York City in exactly 400 words. I tried to stick to my improv roots and write it all in one shot with no edits…and I may have failed. Read the exactly 400 word article by clicking the photo above or CLICKING HERE.

HAPPY TIN ANNIVERSARY UCB FRANKLIN

If such a thing could be tallied, I’d wager the people in this photo with me, both individually and in various combinations, have made me laugh for literal hours. If not days.

Tonight I was asked to do monologues for the ASSSCAT show on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre on Franklin Avenue in Los Angeles. I was honored to do so. The UCB Theatre has brought so much joy and friendship into my life. I am grateful for its existence!

Thanks to everyone on the UCB staff and in the community for always making me feel simultaneously like a superstar and just part of the family. LONG MAY YOU REIGN.

This one is really for the improv nerds.

The Stepfathers perform a 3 person Harold with a 24 minute invocation opening and 1 minute of scenes at Cage-Match.

Watching a video of improv already has layers of magic pealed away and on top of that we did an inverse Harold.

If words like Harold, Invocation, Cage-Match, The Stepfathers or improv do not make sense to you, do not watch.

Fun fact, at the top of the show I thank the audience for coming out to watch us, this was a lie! The audience was not there to watch us. WINK WINK WINK WINK

“When I was in high school I was a really huge ‘SNL’ fan. I remember the cast around the time I started watching it - Will Ferrell, Ana Gasteyer, Molly Shannon, Cheri O'Teri, Tracy Morgan. I did research to find out how people got on the show. Their bios always said they came from an improv team, so I started taking classes.” - Aubrey Plaza

“In 90 minutes, they changed how I felt and thought about comedy. It was punk rock—super dirty and loose.” - Rob Corddry

“They had the thing that drew me to comedy in the first place: that energy when somebody’s putting it all out there, acting like a massive jackass, with no reservations. It was something that scared the shit out of me, and therefore I had to try it. ” - Ed Helms (x)

Final Asssscat of 2013 and it was a great one to end on.

I hosted the 9:30 with Gethard and Ian Roberts. Ian is one of the 4 people that built the UCB, where Gethard and I met. And in a month Gethard and I will be shooting a pilot for Comedy Central together, along with other goofs and wackos we call friends. So it was an especially nice way to cap off a really great year while we head into a dope ass month.

I also got to host the 7:30 with Ian and Tami Sagher by my side. Tami is a mega talent and I have learned so much from her as a performer. She is also one of those people that makes you smile when she enters a room. UCB and NYC are lucky to have her.

Mega Bonus - I improvised with people that I would not even hesitate to add to my “Mutha-fucking fun and easy to improvise with, these people are the best, holy shit, I am lucky” list.  No Joke, look at that fucking line-up!

Pictured L-R Adam Pally, Neil Casey, Tami Sagher, John Lutz, Zach Woods, Chad Carter, Joe Wengert, Ian Roberts, Mike Still, Chris Gethard. Not Pictured, Will Hines, he died after the 7:30 show. Also not pictured Zhubin Parang who was our monologist and was awesome as always.

Improvising is fun. I love it. Thank you.

FREE IMPROV WARM-UP: ONE WORD TWEET

Last fall my Advanced Study Harold class came up with a new warm-up called “One Word Tweet.” It is obviously inspired by one word story, so we give credit there, but my class found it in a moment of discovery which was cool to watch.  I tried it out today with my Improv 401 class and boy did we have a good time!

Stand in a circle.

Designate a person to begin by saying a single word. The person to their left says the next word. Continue clockwise around the circle until someone feels like we have completed the tweet. The person that decides we have come to the end of the tweet will assign a hashtag.

I wish I wrote down the ones said in class, they made me cry with laughter. Her are bastardized guesses at some.

EXAMPLE 1

1. I’m

2. drunk

3. so

4.please

5. don’t

6. try

7. to

7. HASHTAG DRUNK

EXAMPLE 2

1. Ronald

2. Regan

3. loves

4. gaucamole

5. HASHTAG THE 90’s

The purpose of this warm-up is to entertain your teacher.

Anyway enjoy this new warm-up FREE OF CHARGE!
