Massey Official Charged With Lying to FBI in Mine Investigation - Washington Post
A mining official lying and destroying documents to cover up health and safety violations? I know you’re shocked…
Hughie Elbert Stover, chief of security at the Upper Big Branch mine and at two other Massey operations, was indicted on charges of making false statements to federal agents and obstructing a federal investigation by trying to dispose of key documents. The indictment, returned last week by a federal grand jury in Charleston, W.Va., was unsealed Monday after Stover was arrested at his home.
Twenty-nine miners died in the Upper Big Branch mine run my Massey Energy due to an explosion brought on by poor ventilation and the build-up of methane gas. Massey’s safety record at the facility was beyond dismal (1,342 safety violations since 2005, 50 in the month prior to the accident).
Stover’s indictment represents the first criminal charges brought in relation to the disaster. Here’s hoping that there are more to follow.
