Racist and sexist behavior in esports is exposing what regular gamers experience every day

  • In recent months, several professional gamers in the esports world have been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons: incidents of sexual harassment, abuse of power and horrifyingly explicit racist rants.
  • It’s easy to read these high-profile stories and think they’re strange, one-time occurrences — but for those who play games online, these displays of toxic masculinity are an everyday reality.
  • And if you don’t fit the stereotype of a gamer — meaning you’re not a straight, white male — these racist, sexist and homophobic online encounters with total strangers are much more likely to occur.
  • So, what effect do these more high-profile incidents have on the gaming world at large? Do they spark change within communities or simply model bad behavior that normal gamers will be all too eager to emulate? We spoke with Kat Lo — a Ph.D. student and researcher in online communities and harassment at University of California, Irvine — to suss it all out. Read more (5/4/17)

Virtual College Visits!

Thanks to a lot of lovely people, Virtual College Visits can officially start!

What is this post?

This post is a way to connect students who are unable to visit a certain college with someone who has visited that college.

Why?

There are so many things about a college that can’t be learned by looking at their website, or comparing statistics. Yet, at the same time, it is impossible for most students to visit every college that they’re interested in. This is a tool that will hopefully help bridge that gap!

How do I use this?

Think of a school that you’re interested in that you probably won’t be able to visit. Then, scan this (alphabetical) list of schools to see if it’s listed. If it is, congrats! The url(s) listed next to it belong to a person/people who have visited that school. They have contacted me saying that they are willing to talk about their experience at that school with other potential students. Feel free to shoot them a message explaining that you saw their url on this post and want to learn about x school (You should probably specify what school because most of the contributors have visited more than one school).

This is cool! Can I contribute?

Absolutely! Send me (appblrgirl) a message with the schools you would be willing to talk about with others. I will continue to update this post periodically.

Unfortunately because of school and various life things, I won’t be making any more updates to this post for the foreseeable future.

The school I want to visit isn’t on this list!

That sucks. Keep checking back as the list gets updated, you never know when your potential school will show up!

You can also message me with additional questions if you have any.

A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed so far, and good luck to all of you!

P.S. To avoid a large number of schools in the ‘U’ section, any schools starting with ‘University of’ have been reformatted. e.g. Virginia, University of

Archie Andrews was no longer the boy he was pre-Grundy, he was more buff and more sure of himself. You wouldn’t socialize with the red-head anymore because of the torrid affair with an older woman he had had. He tried to talk to you but you kept stone walling him and you just couldn’t look at him in the eye anymore. Jughead seemed to understand the most out of the group.

“You feel uncomfortable because your dad is the sheriff?” Veronica asked confused on why you didn’t talk to Archie. Why you would rush off when he joined you guys for lunch.

“Majorly, I want to be an officer when I’m older.” You sighed.

Veronica and you had bonded very quickly when she arrived. Both her and Jughead were the small group of people that you frequently socialized with. Other than your brother of course.

“Why would you want to wear those drab clothes?”

“She’s lying, that’s her childhood dream.” Your younger brother, Kevin, said as he plucked a fry off your plate.

You weren’t the same age as your friends but Jughead was in your advanced english class so you studies together a lot. You were a year and a half older than them truthfully but they were more matured and not stuck up assholes. They were sophomore and you’re a senior.

“Shut up child.” You said pushing Kevin away from you and your tray of food.

“I’m just surprised.” Veronica said, “I’ve heard you and Archie dated.”

You sighed as she brought up your past relationships. During Archie’s freshmen year you had dated the entire year. Maybe it was the seriousness of the relationship before his cougar loving summer that didn’t allow you to be around him anymore.

Writing Research: American Revolution

The American Revolution was a political upheaval that took place between 1765 and 1783 during which colonists in the Thirteen American Colonies rejected the British monarchy and aristocracy, overthrew the authority of Great Britain, and founded the United States of America.

Starting in 1765, members of American colonial society rejected the authority of the British Parliament to tax them without any representatives in the government, and resisted renewed British attempts to collect duties on goods such as sugar and molasses that for many years had gone uncollected through widespread smuggling by colonists. During the following decade, protests by colonists—known as Patriots—continued to escalate, as in the Boston Tea Party in 1773 during which patriots destroyed a consignment of taxed tea from the East India Company. The British responded by imposing punitive laws—the Coercive Acts—on Massachusetts in 1774 until the tea had been paid for, following which Patriots in the other colonies rallied behind Massachusetts. In late 1774 the Patriots set up their own alternative government to better coordinate their resistance efforts against Britain, while other colonists, known as Loyalists, preferred to remain subjects of the British Crown.

Tensions escalated to the outbreak of fighting between Patriot militia and British regulars at Lexington and Concord in April 1775, after which the Patriot Suffolk Resolves effectively replaced the Royal government of Massachusetts, and confined the British to control of the city of Boston. The conflict then evolved into a global war, during which the Patriots (and later their French, Spanish and Dutch allies) fought the British and Loyalists in what became known as the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783). Patriots in each of the thirteen colonies formed a Provincial Congress that assumed power from the old colonial governments and suppressed Loyalism. Claiming King George III’s rule to be tyrannical and infringing the colonists’ “rights as Englishmen”, the Continental Congress declared the colonies free and independent states in July 1776. The Patriot leadership professed the political philosophies of liberalism and republicanism to reject monarchy and aristocracy, and proclaimed that all men are created equal. Congress rejected British proposals requiring allegiance to the monarchy and abandonment of independence. [1]

ANTARCTICA - OCTOBER 27: Ice floats near the coast of West Antarctica viewed from a window of a NASA Operation IceBridge airplane. NASA’s Operation IceBridge has been studying how polar ice has evolved over the past eight years. Researchers have used the IceBridge data to observe that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet may be in a state of irreversible decline directly contributing to rising sea levels. NASA and University of California, Irvine (UCI) researchers have recently detected the speediest ongoing Western Antarctica glacial retreat rates ever observed. Now I’d like to know WHO decided to draw THIS for their university club!

I happened to see this club poster, and I didn’t even bat an eye when I recognized the characters on there. I was surprised to see it fairly preserved and intact! Apparently the club members weren’t aware of the anime reference to these characters, nor do they remember the artist.

To the former student/graduate who shamelessly drew Inazuma Eleven fanart - Your legacy lives on in the Hansori Korean Drumming Club. ZOT ZOT ZOT FOR ME, YOU KNOW IT!

If you like, REBLOG to spread the word and love LOL!

*sappy post warning*

This wasn’t meant to be a sappy post but it turned into one. So here goes.

yo. we did it.

meet the newest baccalaureates from the class of 2017 at the University of California, Irvine

“And my success is not except through God.” (11:88)

These girls are who got me through the dark times. They (literally) held me when I’d fall apart. They lent patient ears to whatever I was venting about. They made my abs hurt from laughter when we should’ve been studying for finals. They also selflessly devoted their time and helped saved my grades when I couldn’t keep up and needed a hand. Most importantly, they reminded me of God.

I may not be as close as I used to be to every person in these pictures, but each one will still always hold a very precious place in my heart. We may have differed and encountered situations that made our relationships irreversible, but I don’t think I, or any one of them, intended for those relationships to be damaged, or simply fade. In any case, regardless of where we stand now, I owe an enormous amount of thanks to these sisters who shaped where I am now.

And I have to say that out of everything I’ve found in college, I will miss them the most.

@libeeya @zalsadek

Okie I’m done lol.

(also if you didn’t get my neuro cap - action potential. dopamine. will forever be a nerd. Heh)
