When I can I like to turn my design work to matters I find morally important.

New Zealand’s critically endangered Maui’s dolphin is the world’s smallest and rarest marine dolphin and is in very real danger of extinction. Only about 55 adult dolphins now remain alive. Despite over 70,000 submissions in favour of better protection, the New Zealand Government’s response is once again shamefully inadequate.

To find out how you can help to save this majestic species from extinction visit the New Zealand Greenpeace website here, or for more information read the New Zealand Department of Conservation’s website here.

These size 6 canvas shoes from Glassons I have painted with acrylic paints and sealed to be water resistant (which means they’re fine in a light rain shower but you probably wouldn’t want to go wading through puddles in them). They also have a small handmade charm hanging from the heel of the right shoe.

Koi fish in Japanese tradition are known to represent persistence and aspiration in the face of all odds because of their difficult journey upstream each breeding season. It is believed that once they pass through the Dragon Gate on the Yellow River they turn into dragons.

They also represent family; with orange, red and pink koi fish colourings for girls.

I first revealed these shoes on my deviantART account below:

Galaxy Shoes

Galaxy patterned customisation seems to be the trending DIY project on the net right now, so I thought I’d give it a go myself - here is the result!

I read through a lot of blog posts, pinterest pins and watched a couple of youtube videos before getting started on these shoes. Just search “DIY galaxy shoes” on any of the aforementioned sites and you will find a plethora of tutorials, techniques and images for inspiration. I didn’t follow any one tutorial in particular, but rather borrowed tips from a range of them and come up with some tips of my own =]

If you would like to fancy up your own footwear then going galaxy is a satisfying project to start with. Here are some of my top tips for customising a pair of black canvas shoes:

  • Use three tones for each paint colour range; dark, medium and very light. You want to have at least twice the jump in brightness from medium to light as you have from dark to medium for the greatest impact. Doing this project again, I would mix my lightest shade of purple with more white to get the same pop as the light blue has.
  • Use sponges instead of dry brushing. I started off using a wide brush of medium stiffness to lay on the blue and purple layers, but soon switched to sponge brushes because they help to create a much softer gradient. You don’t want to be seeing brush strokes in your galaxy clouds.
  • The shoes are going to look lame until you add the white star scape, so don’t be deterred! I probably worked over the blue and purple galaxy clouds twice as much as I needed to before adding the white dots, which instantly transformed the whole effect of the shoe design.
  • Ceiling paint. While I used generic acrylic paints for the purple and blue backgrounds white acrylic is just not thick enough to get the bright dots of starlight we are after here. Many tutorials recommend getting white acrylic paint on the end of an old toothbrush and flicking it - do not do this! You will end up with concentrated blotchy patches, not an even spread of white stars. I recommend grabbing a bamboo skewer and dipping it in thick white house paint, then dotting each star on individually. You don’t have to be very particular about where your stars are going, and you can have large or small stars depending on whether you use the point or flat end.
  • Seal your shoes to be water and stain resistant. There’s nothing more disheartening than decorating fab footwear only to have the design wash away at the first sight of rain. I use “Waproo Water and Stain Protector”, but there are many other equivalent brands which are just as good. Remember to do a test spot in an inconspicuous location first to ensure that the sealant dries clear over your paint work.

If you have some tips of your own, or this inspires you to get creative with your own pair of shoes please send me a message - I’d love to see what you’ve come up with! =]

Of course, if you don’t feel like undertaking this project yourself I am happy to customise a pair for you ;) To purchase these shoes, request this design in another size, or request a unique commission, email me at unicornucopiae@gmail.com
