If you enjoy Downton Abbey or Upstairs Downstairs this is a book you will enjoy. This is a memoir of a woman who worked as a kitchen maid in several large houses similar to that of Downton Abbey. It gives you a real sense of what it was actually like to work as a maid in the early 1900s. It also shows how accurate those TV series actually are because there are several moments in the book that are reminiscent of the tv shows. The book is written in a simple conversationalist style so it feels more like you’re talking to Margaret Powell than reading about her life. The memoir is fairly short and quick read. She really only talks about her life working as a maid, she very briefly touches on her childhood and her life after she got married, but not very much. It’s simple, interesting and informative for any history buff.
