Going through a rewatch I love how important the early motw episodes have been to set up the themes of this season so far…
1. Children are born innocent are not responsible for the actions of their parents (established very early in the season with consecutive episodes 12x03, 12x04, 12x05). Firmly confirmed by Dagon in 12x13 that this is relevant re: nephilim.
2. Dean is growing emotionally and being more open with his feelings. He is admitting to and saying out loud things he never would have previously. Mary admitting to not being ‘fine’ in 12x01 is crucial to this. He’s not coping well with Cas leaving (although he knows he will return) and Mary leaving, not sure that she’ll return. Dean later revealing that he’s worried, not mad (this is relevant to these early episodes where Cas is gone and he’s clearly unhappy about it), feeling like he and Sam deserved better from their mom, having cake instead of pie and not making a big deal out of it, admitting that ‘sublimation is kinda my thing’, letting Jody speak to him about his feelings….
3. Doing the ‘wrong thing’ for the ‘greater good’ is firmly established as the questionable core theme of 12x04, 12x05, 12x06.
4. ‘True’ family does not start or end with blood. Blood family can hurt and trap you, found family and even strangers can be your saviour (12x04, 12x05)….
