Crystal Cave, Bermuda

Context: Our party had just defeated two elite Drow, one of which was out of range for a majority of the fight, levitating over an underground cave pool infested with a giant lightning eel, that only the ranger could hit with her bow until she managed to lasso and pull him closer. The conversation took place while the party was long resting.

Aseer: You know, I have a long bow that I have never used during this campaign so far.

Sohana: Well, if you don’t have a need for it, you could always give it to me in case I lose mine.

Aseer: Why? I’m proficient with it.

Sohana: Oh, well, why didn’t you use it during the fight then? If you need arrows, I could give you some.

Aseer: I have like 60, I’m good.

Sohana: So you are proficient with a long bow, with plenty of arrows, but forgot that you had it, leaving me to be the only one able to land a hit on the stupid Drow that almost wiped us?!

Sohana, OOC: *To guild leader while hysterically laughing* This guy could use a bow the entire time during the fight!

Thalon, OOC: You could what?! *Voice breaks like he’s just given up on the world*

photos of the the sơn doòng cave in vietnam. at 200 metres high, 150 metres wide and five kilometres long, it is the biggest cave in the world – so large, it has its own river, jungle and even climate. it also contains the world’s tallest stalagmite, which stands over 80 metres tall (consider that it was formed one drop of mineral saturated water at a time).

despite its immense underground size, the cave is practically invisible from the outside, seen only from the mist wafting from surface cracks. with a huge temperature difference between the cooler air inside the cave and warmer outside air, son doong is home to moving clouds of mist, which can be illuminated by natural light up to four kilometres away. The Volcano Lynel. Extremely rare and tough, this variant dwells in places where regular Lynels don’t usually go, such as vast underground caves inside the Death Mountain; but it might also inhabit some unexplored areas of the Gerudo Desert.

Aside from its much different body type, more feline than equine, and its horns and fangs being much larger than its fellow creatures, this terrifying Lynel wields unknown weapons and… it is said to exclusively fire bomb arrows with its bow.

Its appearance might oddly remind you of something… but there seems to be no way to find any memory related to this monster here in Hyrule.

Ben McDaniel’s parents believe two things: That their 30-year-old son dived into an underwater cave in Vortex Springs in Florida on the 18th of August, 2010. And that he is dead. What happened in between those two events has completely turned their life upside down.

Ben was an avid diver; his parents lived just a short distance from Vortex Springs and he was there weekly. While he frequented the spring, he never received sufficient training and wasn’t experienced. The spring consists of of a 200ft basin which leads to an underground cave system. At the entrance to the grace is an ominous sign, warning divers that continuing past that point could be dangerous. In the 1990s, 13 divers perished in the cave.

On the 20th of August, it was noticed that Ben’s car was still in the parking lot where it had remained for two days. Witnesses came forward to say they had encountered Ben on the evening of the 18th of August. He was descending down into the cave. He reached the lock gate which is only opened for experienced divers and tried to give the gate open. Eduardo Taran, an experienced diver who worked at the springs, witnessed this and opened the gate for him. This was the last time he was ever seen.

The spring was closed while his disappearance was investigated. There was no sign of a struggle at his car and his belongings say untouched. Over the forthcoming years, police and experienced divers alike have searched every nook and cranny of the cave system. Many divers are adamant that Ben isn’t inside the cave. Some theorise that he was murdered while others theorise he faked his own death. His family, however, are sure that he is dead and that his body still remains submerged. Nevertheless, his body has never been found.

CONTEXT: We’re fighting two yetis in an underground cave of sorts. Yes, two yetis. Everyone is about of Level 13, and two of us are down making saving throws.

Walrock: Okay, we’re screwed,

Sorcerer [Me]: (looking over spell sheet) ) You auto-fail saving rolls when you’re stunned, right?

Cleric: Depends on the throw, I think.

Me: Oh, okay. I fast Power Word Stun with metamagic to make it take a single bonus action, and then I polmorph them into turnips.

DM: (rolls) There are now two yeti turnips.

Cleric: Okay, I squish one.

Warlock: Oh, cool, I eat one.

(Some time later…)

DM: [Warlock], you suddenly feel nauseous and very, very full.

Me: Wait, did-

DM: She now has a belly fulla yeti.

Glowworm Caves in Waitomo

In the Waitomo region of New Zealand, there is an underground labrynth of caves that have been forming over the last 30 million years. And in one of these caverns is a very special animal – one that has evolved to thrive in wind-free places exactly like these caverns. The species is Arachnocampa luminosa, a species of fungus gnat that is luminous during the larval stage. When a person travels by boat or inner tube through the pitch black Glowworm Grotto, as the cavern is called, the ceiling looks like a galaxy of blue stars.

lostuntothisworld  asked:

a while back you recommended the movie Autopsy of Jane Doe and it was fantastic! Do you have any more horror movie recs that are psychological like that (with minimal jump scares preferably?)

omg yesssssssss, i sure as heck do. i looooooove recommending horror movies. kay, here we go, pychological, disturbing, and minimal jump scares:

1. Get Out (2017) - this is a newer movie, and I’m sure you’ve heard about it (and maybe even seen it already). I finally got to see it in theaters and it was marvelous. Very tense horror, minimal jump scares. Definitely recommend it if you haven’t seen it yet.

2. The Thing (1982) - this is probably my favorite horror movie, and one I will always, always recommend to people. It’s more sci-fi/horror, but horror none the less. This is a movie that feeds on uncertainty and tension, fueled by distrust and paranoia between the characters. (There was also a prequel to this movie made in 2011, and I certainly enjoyed that one as well, but it still couldn’t quite deliver the same chills and fear the 1982 version did.)

3. They Look Like People (2015) - this is another one that I just watched recently. Probably one of the best that fits the category of psychological horror. It’s a bit slow to start, but develops into a story that will leave you tense, unsure, and unsettled. Plus, it’s probably the only horror movie I have ever seen that manages to highlight mental illness without demonizing it.

4. As Above So Below (2014) - this is a movie that honestly, I was very skeptical about seeing. It’s a found footage movie (which I typically hate), and it got very poor reviews, but I wound up watching it on a whim one day and found myself enjoying it a lot more than I expected. It honestly is more of a adventure/horror film rather than a strict horror film - and the reviews might have been better, I think, if its marketing hadn’t painted it as a strict horror film. There are a few jump scares in there, but not a whole lot. Much the movie relies on claustrophobia, confusion, and mystery. It’s really an interesting look at a journey into hell. I greatly enjoy it, though your mileage may vary.

5. Event Horizon (1997) - another sci-fi/horror film. A nightmarish movie about salvage/rescue crew that goes out to salvage a ship that vanished on its maiden voyage and reappeared 7 years later missing its entire crew. This movie deals well in suspense, fear, and our ultimate terror of what evils could lie beyond the unknown.

6. The Descent (2005) - yet another movie I recommend to everyone. Set underground in an unknown cave system, and led by an all female cast, this movie is just full of anxiety, paranoia, claustrophobia, and unease. It’ll certainly make you never want to go caving.

7. The Strangers (2008) - a great take on the classic home invasion/slasher film. It boasts a really creepy atmosphere, an isolated setting, and has moments of genuine, realistic anxiety and terror (even the small things, like trying to find somewhere to hide and realizing you can’t fit, etc…) I saw this movie with my best friend back when it first came out, and it’s still one of my favorites.

8. The Others (2001) - this is not your typical ghost story. Honestly this one is hard to describe because I don’t want to give too much away about the plot. In the last few days of World War II, a woman and her two children wait in isolation, after the mysterious disappearance of their servants, for her husband/their father to return from the war. It’s only in the isolation of the house that they begin to realize the house might not be as empty as they thought it was. Very, very unique take on a ghost story. The case is wonderful, and the pacing and setting of this movie creates wonderfully creepy, unsettling fear.

9. The Witch (2016) - slow-burn horror and very setting specific, this one’s focus is on religious fear and the sexual stigmatization of girls and women. It’s slow-paced, but really great at building up a sense of unease and dread, and even the small things in it, like small rabbits in the wild, can make you feel unsettled.

10. Black Swan (2010) - not strictly a horror movie, this one is heavily psychological, and I almost want to cast it as a thriller more than anything, but some of it truly does fall into the realm of psychological horror. Paranoia, obsession, and tension, this movie is chock-full of it.

11. Funny Games (2007) - this one is actually a remake of a 1997 movie of the same name. I feel kind of bad, but I actually haven’t seen the original, but from what I hear, the two movies don’t differ much. This one is particularly unsettling because of its constant underlying feeling of authenticity. Much like The Strangers, this feels real, like it could happen to anyone, like its psychopaths could be anybody, any well-to-do strangers. It’s a long, sometimes unbearably frustrating game of physical and psychological torture; and the few moments of well-timed 4th wall breaking really up the frustration and distress.

12. 1408 (2007) - based on a Stephen King story, this film heavily relies on psychological and anxiety-building elements to create its tension. Every thing that happens in this room makes you question what it will do next, what trick will it pull, what hopes will it dash. There’s not much else to say about this one exept that… “It’s an evil fucking room.”

13. El Orfanato/The Orphanage (2007) - man this one is definitely a favorite of mine. Very unnerving and deeply emotional at the same time, this one is a very well-crafted and clever take on the haunted house/orphanage trope. It’s spooky, chilling, has some moments that will genuinely crawl under your skin (the 1-2-3 toca la pared scene always does it for me…), and features a wildly emotional ending.

14. The Babadook (2014) - this one doesn’t rely on cheap scares at all, but still features some truly creepy and unnerving moments that left me on edge. But in addition to that, this movie is about so much more than a boogeyman lurking in the shadows. Heavily psychological, this movie delves deeply into how we process loss and deal with all-consuming grief.

15. 28 Days Later (2002) - I probably don’t need to say much about this one. It’s a movie that most people have either seen or have at least heard of. But there’s a reason it’s consistently named one of the best zombie movies around. It deals with not only the horror of the zombies (and they certainly make that aspect scary on its own), but also the darkest aspects of the fall of society. We’re given a frighteningly grim look at the degradation of humanity and the darkest aspects of human nature as society falls apart.

15 seems like enough! And hopefully you’ll like some of those!! :D

(also, for those reading this, please watch Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) cause it’s amazing)

Watering the plants

Part2:
Tension had be high ever since Pidge’s headphones were broken and no one owned up to it.
Everyone was in a bad mood, not talking or trusting each other.
Allura saw only one solution.
To abandon the Paladins on a forest planet without their armour or bayards with only emergency supplies.

“Well this sucks” Lance moaned looking through the bag of supplies finding only one large blanket between the five of them and only enough food to last two days if they rationed.
“It could be worse, at least the planet doesn’t seem hostile.” Shiro shrugged from where him and Pidge were building a makeshift shelter.
“I only hope they remembered to pack my meds.” Lance sighed continuing his rooting.
All the others stopped in their tasks.
It had been a couple weeks since the garden incident and everyone had been tip toeing around the subject of Lance and his episodes.
Well everyone but Hunk “don’t worry Buddy I got them here.” He produced the full orange plastic container from his pocket and gave it a little shake causing the pills to rattle around.
“Thanks Hunk.” Lance sighed standing up and joining him building a fire.

By time night fell Keith had returned from hunting with a few alien rabbits that Hunk cooked while everyone else sat round the fire.
“You know for a survival bonding trip, this is actually kinda nice.” Lance sighed leaning back against a tree while the others nodded in agreement.
For a moment everything was peaceful.
Then that moment passed and the ground collapsed beneath them.

The sudden earthquake had caused the thin piece of rock they had set up camp on to fall into a cave network.
Lance sat up rubbing his head as he looked around the dark cavern he had fallen into.
His arm hurt but didn’t feel broken so that was good.
The problem was he couldn’t see any of the others.
“Hello?”
His voice echoed throughout the empty space.
“Guys? Hunk? Shiro? Pidge?… Keith?”
Nothing no reply.
Lance stretched his hands out in front of him hitting the cold stone wall.
He was trapped in a small cavern only about a arms width in diameter. He felt around and found what could be the bottom of a ledge but was just out of his reach.
Lance sighed, didn’t look like he was getting out of here anytime soon.
He slid down to the wet floor drawing his knees close to his chest as he waited and listened.
At some point he must of fallen asleep because when he woke he heard someone yelling.
“Hello?” Lance called.
“Lance?” The voice replied.
A head suddenly appeared over the ledge holding a small light.
Lance realised it was Keith.
“Holy quiznark, I’ve never been so glad to see you Mullet.”
“Likewise.” He smirked offering down a hand to pull him up.
Lance tried to lift his hand high enough but a jolt of pain reminded him of his injured arm.
Keith noticed the look of pain and lowered his light slightly to see the blood stained limb.
“Fuck”
“Language” Lance chuckled.
“I don’t know how I’m going to get you out of there…” Keith sighed. “Guess we just have to hope one of the others gets out and calls Allura.”
“Don’t worry I’m sure Pidge has gotten out by now. That little gremlin practically lives in the vents so I’m sure a little underground cave system is nothing.” Lance chuckled glad to see a small smile forcing its way onto Keith’s face.
A small beeping noise came from Lance’s watch causing the blue paladin to pale. “I don’t suppose you found my meds after you fell… did you?”
Keith’s eyes widened “shit Lance… what do I do? How do I keep you here I-”
“Keith buddy calm down. Missing a dosage just makes it more likely something will happen. It’s not a definite. And if you keep talking to me it may work out fine.”
Keith seemed to calm down slightly at this but still seemed consumed by worry, not able to forget the sight of Lance standing over the plants bleeding from cuts in his wrists.
“Ok…ok, so what do you want to talk about?” Keith asked taking a shaky breath.
Lance shrugged in response causing Keith to groan in frustration.
“Ok what about the ocean? Your always talking how much you miss it.”
A fond look came across Lance’s face “I really do. I miss swimming against the current and the feeling of wet sand beneath my feet. I miss collecting sea glass and shell with my little brother and sister.”
Lance rambled on about the ocean for about 20 minutes before Keith noticed Lance had the same far away look he had last time he had slipped away.
“L-Lance? You still with me?”
“Mmhm” Lance hummed his expression suddenly turning to panic. “Keith! The water its rising! Get me out!” He yelled frantically clawing at the walls.
“Lance you need to calm down there’s no water.” Keith tried to explain.
“No there is! Its getting higher! Please pull me up! I don’t want to drown!” He yelled scrapping his finger nails so hard against the rock that one came off and the others were split and bleeding.
Keith knew this was bad. Lance could seriously hurt himself if this kept up. His thoughts turned to Hunk explaining that the best way to deal with situation was to try and calm Lance down and talk him out of what he’s doing.
Keith tried to swallow the lump in his throat. “Lance..erm you can swim remember. You just need to swim up with the water.”
Lance seemed to calm down slightly as he began to move his arms in what would a comical fashion if not for the circumstances. “Good buddy j-just concentrate on treading water and you’ll be just fine.”
“Lance? Keith?”
Shiro’s voice called from above as he scaled down the rock on a line.
“Here Shiro!” Keith called back.
Shiro landed next to him. “You ok? Where’s Lance?” He asked before following where Keith gestured to see Lance frantically moving his arms with tears falling down his face.
Shiro cursed softly under his breath. “I knew coming here was a bad idea.”
He dropped a line down to Lance and after a bit of coaxing was able to get him to the surface.
He was sedated and placed into the pods for an hour to heal the damage done to his hands. When he came out and saw all the worried faces of his friends Lance broke down sobbing.
“It happened again! I’m sorry I’m so sorry I’m such a useless paladin.”
“You have nothing to apologise for Lance. This is my fault for sending you all on this bonding exercise. I never dreamed the planet would be unstable.” Allura said as she wrapped him up in a hug.
Hunk stepped forward joining the hug"it’s not your fault princess it’s mine.“ He added guiltily “I had his meds, if I had just given them to him before the earthquake then it wouldn’t of happened.
"I should of gotten out and called for help quicker instead of waisting time looking for everyone.” Pidge mumbled throwing her arms around Lance’s torso.
“I’m the leader, looking after my team is responsibility, I’m so so sorry Lance.” Shiro placed a hand on Lance’s shoulder.
“No… its my fault I couldn’t keep you here, I let slip off.” Keith grumbled too awkward to join the hug.
After a few moment Lance looked up “let’s just move on ok? No point in feeling guilty…”

After that it was decided that every paladin would carry a small bottle of Lance’s medication on them when they went out on missions just in case.
Lance pretended it didn’t bother him, but it felt like with his team constantly monitoring him they were just admitting to something Lance had known since day one.
That he was the weakest link.
