OC OCTOBER : MAEVE & CULLEN RELATIONSHIP

There was no love at first sight. Only an inability to trust based on a stranger’s face. To be polite was easy. To smile was as simple as donning on a mask. Maeve had done exactly that for the past ten years.  She was too busy fighting her own demons to understand that he was trying to move on from his. It would take weeks, even months for her to trust him in-between forming alliances and solving the problem to the Mage-Templar war. Soon the title of “Commander” dropped to “Cullen” and their brief conversations in Haven grew. Eventually, they secured a stable friendship and mutual support.

What gratified her the most about him was that Cullen didn’t discard her opinions, even when he may not have agreed. He listened, and even considered them, but that was more than her family–save for Bran–had ever done. Maeve was also envious of him. He was a natural leader and was shown respect because he earned it.  People lavished their attention upon her for simply being the “Herald of Andraste” which felt ill-earned.  Cullen also learned and grew from the past. Perhaps Maeve’s pain was still too raw but she envied that strength of character as much as she admired it.

Subconsciously, her admiration for him grew. She didn’t realize how much until he twisted his mouth that made his scar crinkle when she thanked him at the ruins of Skyhold. Maeve had done so back at Haven–but now he gave her a smile that she had not seen before. There was a new tone in his voice now, softer, laced with a concern she had not heard when he mentioned how she could have–then catches himself and promises never to let the events of Haven happen again.

Maeve wouldn’t have even admitted this change to herself, let alone anybody, save for Cole who she can’t hide anything from. Maeve tried to keep her opinions on this topic under lock and key despite side remarks from close friends. She can’t be selfish, or at least that was her conviction. Last time she considered herself selfish, she had gotten Bran killed because of her. She just doesn’t want to risk that chance to lose him either.

Now was not the right time. The Inquisition needs to rebuilt, needs more troops, more alliances. Corypheus was still out in the world with his Red Templar army and she’s the only one who can stop him. She doesn’t have time for…she just couldn’t be–

But she is, an silent admittance drawn out in a long exhausted sigh though she tries to reason against herself for the hundredth time.

hello from the other side. i must’ve called a thousand times to tell you i’m sorry for everything that i’ve done; when i call, you never seem to be home. hello from the outside. at least i can say that i tried to tell you i’m sorry for breaking your heart, but it don’t matter, it clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore…
