The Detroit area lost a great writer today – novelist Elmore Leonard died at the age of 87 after complications from a stroke.
I was fortunate enough to get to see Mr. Leonard speak about his writing process on two separate occasions. We went to the same high school, the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy, and he came every year to speak to English classes about his life. He was always giving back to his school, his city, and his community. That’s just the type of guy he was.
Though he graduated U of D in 1943, and I in 2012, I still feel a deep sense of kinship for this fantastic novelist. Make sure to pick up one of his many thrillers, and never forget this true Detroiter. RIP Elmore.
